Vitamin B6 may aid migraines
Pyridoxine, folate and cobalamin for migraine: A systematic review.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how vitamin B6, along with other B vitamins like folate and B12, might help in preventing migraines. Through a thorough review of existing research, we discovered that while vitamin B6 showed some promise in reducing migraines with aura in adults, the results aren’t as clear-cut for individuals suffering from other forms of headaches. In fact, in the context of treating acute migraine attacks, the benefits of these vitamins have not been supported by strong evidence from studies.

We found several trials that looked specifically at vitamin B6 for migraine prevention. The results were generally positive, especially for those experiencing migraines with aura, where vitamin B6 exhibited significant benefits against placebo in multiple studies. However, when it comes to folate, using it alone didn’t show improved outcomes compared to placebo. Limited data on children and those suffering from migraines without aura prevented us from making definitive conclusions about vitamin B6’s effectiveness across different demographics.

Overall, there’s a potential positive effect of vitamin B6 in managing migraines, particularly in adults with aura. While the safety profile appears favorable, we advocate for more high-quality research to clarify its role in treating various types of migraines.

Vitamin B6 may lower kidney stones
Intake of vitamins B6 and C and the risk of kidney stones in women.
Most Relevant Research
We examined the relationship between vitamin B6 intake and kidney stone formation in women. This research involved over 85,000 women with no prior history of kidney stones, monitored over 14 years. The study utilized food-frequency questionnaires to track participants' dietary vitamin consumption from both food and supplements.

Our findings revealed that higher vitamin B6 intake appeared to lower the risk of developing kidney stones. Specifically, women consuming 40 mg or more of vitamin B6 per day had a risk reduction, with a relative risk of 0.66 compared to those taking less than 3 mg per day. This suggests that large doses of vitamin B6 might help in preventing the formation of these painful stones.

On the other hand, vitamin C intake did not show a significant link to kidney stone risk. Women who consumed high amounts of vitamin C didn't experience an increased or decreased risk of kidney stones relative to those with lower intake levels. Therefore, we conclude that while vitamin B6 may provide protective benefits against kidney stones, restricting vitamin C isn't necessary for prevention.

Vitamin B6 shows promise for migraines
Pyridoxine, folate and cobalamin for migraine: A systematic review.
Most Relevant Research
We delved into the potential benefits of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) in treating migraines, particularly in how it relates to other B vitamins like folate and B12. By examining various studies, we focused on the efficacy of B6 alone and in combination with these other vitamins.

The findings were intriguing! While the management of acute migraine attacks using these vitamins didn’t show promising results in one controlled trial, we noted significant benefits when B6 was used as a preventative measure. In several trials, B6 alone or combined with folate, or with both folate and B12, proved to be effective for adults suffering from migraine with aura—outperforming placebo treatments in most cases.

Interestingly, we also found that while folate as a standalone treatment didn’t yield better outcomes than placebo, the overall safety profile of these vitamins was quite good. Most participants reported only mild gastrointestinal side effects. However, we came across limited data regarding the effects of these vitamins on migraine without aura in both children and adults, making it difficult to draw broader conclusions.

In summary, our exploration of the role of vitamin B6 in migraine protection reveals its potential to aid adults with migraine with aura, though more thorough research is needed for other types, especially in younger populations.

Vitamin B6 risks in pregnancy
The potential hazards of high doses of vitamin B6 in treating nausea and vomiting in pregnancy: A systematic review.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated the use of vitamin B6 as a common treatment for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. There has been an ongoing discussion about how effective high doses of this vitamin actually are, and we wanted to shed light on this issue.

Through a systematic review of literature, we examined various studies, focusing on reports that highlighted the effects of high doses of vitamin B6 on pregnant women experiencing nausea. While we found that many women do turn to vitamin B6 to alleviate their symptoms, particularly during the challenging first trimester, the data also raised serious concerns about potential side effects.

A significant portion of the studies reviewed documented adverse reactions in women taking excessive amounts of vitamin B6. These included neurological symptoms such as burning sensations, tingling, and coordination problems. Alarmingly, we also noted a few cases of miscarriage and intrauterine demise among those studied.

Overall, while vitamin B6 is a widely used treatment for nausea during pregnancy, we must exercise caution. The risks associated with high doses cannot be overlooked, particularly when it comes to the health of both the mother and the developing fetus.

Vitamin B6 may reduce neuropathy
Vitamin B6 status and chronic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: a prospective cohort study among patients with non-metastatic colorectal cancer receiving oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy.
Most Relevant Research
We focused on understanding how vitamin B6 influences chronic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), a long-lasting side effect experienced by patients undergoing oxaliplatin-based treatment for non-metastatic colorectal cancer. Our study included 242 patients who provided blood samples at multiple points—before starting chemotherapy, during it, and after completing treatment.

We measured several vitamin B6 markers in the blood and examined their connection to the occurrence and severity of chronic CIPN a year post-diagnosis. Our findings revealed that while normal levels of a particular form of vitamin B6 were present, those with higher levels during chemotherapy reported lower instances and reduced severity of CIPN symptoms. This suggests that maintaining adequate vitamin B6 levels may be beneficial for patients facing chemotherapy-related nerve issues.

Still, it’s important to approach these results cautiously. More research is needed to firmly establish a cause-and-effect relationship and to determine the optimal vitamin B6 levels for patients undergoing chemotherapy. This insight could pave the way for better management of neuropathy among cancer patients in the future.

Vitamin B6 aids allergy management
Vitamin B6 regulates IL-33 homeostasis to alleviate type 2 inflammation.
Most Relevant Research
We explored the effects of vitamin B6, specifically its active form called pyridoxal phosphate (PLP), on allergic responses. Our research focused on how this vitamin might influence interleukin-33 (IL-33), a key cytokine involved in type 2 inflammation, typically seen in asthma and other allergic conditions.

We found that healthy individuals had higher levels of PLP in their blood compared to asthma patients. Notably, lower PLP levels correlated with worse lung function and increased inflammation in those with asthma. In tests using mouse models of lung inflammation, we observed that PLP significantly reduced the type 2 immune response, suggesting a protective role against allergic reactions.

Delving deeper, we identified that the conversion of pyridoxal to PLP was critical for regulating IL-33 stability. Moreover, we found that a protein called MDM2 contributed to IL-33's stability by facilitating its degradation. Using PLP helped to decrease IL-33 levels in the lungs and enhance the regulation of this protein, providing a potential new avenue for allergy treatment.

Additionally, inhalation of PLP showed promise in mitigating asthma-related symptoms in mouse models. Overall, our findings indicate that vitamin B6 could serve as a beneficial strategy in managing type 2 inflammation and offer new hope for developing effective treatments for allergy-related diseases.

Vitamin B6 effects on psoriasis inflammation
The vitamin B6-regulated enzymes PYGL and G6PD fuel NADPH oxidases to promote skin inflammation.
Most Relevant Research
We explored the intriguing connection between vitamin B6 and psoriasis, a skin condition affecting about 3% of people worldwide. This research centers on how vitamin B6 impacts skin inflammation, focusing on its metabolites and their effects on inflammatory markers in psoriasis patients.

Through thorough analysis and functional studies, we observed that vitamin B6 compounds could decrease the infiltration of neutrophils, reduce oxidative stress, and lower Nfkb activity in zebrafish models mimicking skin inflammation. Impressively, when we inhibited specific enzymes regulated by vitamin B6, namely glycogen phosphorylase L (Pygl) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6pd), we found a significant reduction in oxidative-stress-induced inflammation.

These findings suggest that while G6pd typically plays a vital role in fighting oxidative stress, it also seems to work with glycogen stores to fuel inflammation through the action of NADPH oxidase. This brings to light potential new treatment targets for psoriasis and similar inflammatory skin disorders, emphasizing the need for continuous exploration in this area.

Pyridoxine improves skin hydration
Pyridoxine stimulates filaggrin production in human epidermal keratinocytes.
Most Relevant Research
We explored the effects of pyridoxine, a form of vitamin B6, on skin health, focusing particularly on its potential benefits for those struggling with acne. Our research indicates that pyridoxine plays a significant role in maintaining the function of the epidermis, the outermost layer of our skin.

Through our examination of normal human epidermal keratinocytes, we observed that pyridoxine enhances the expression of profilaggrin mRNA, a precursor to filaggrin—a key protein involved in skin hydration and barrier function. The results show that treatment with pyridoxine leads to an increased production of filaggrin protein, and this effect is concentration-dependent.

While the study did not isolate findings specifically focused on treating acne alone, the increase in filaggrin production suggests that vitamin B6 might contribute positively to skin conditions related to dryness and irritation, which often accompany acne-prone skin. Our findings suggest that pyridoxine could be a valuable daily care ingredient for those with atopic dermatitis or skin issues associated with low filaggrin levels.

Avoid B6 caution
Most Useful Review
Very dangerous! I started taking this on May 12th and ended up in the ER on July 22nd. B6 is extremely hazardous; it can cause irreversible neurological issues. I began feeling light-headed, which escalated quickly into tingling down my face, head, and arms. I saw spots and experienced prism-like vision. Nausea, chills, and trembling followed. My B6 plasma blood work showed 288.4, while the normal range is 20-125. Please read about it, as it could be lethal! Now, I'm left waiting for it to clear from my body while suffering daily symptoms, which are dreadful. Other countries do not allow such dangerously high doses. DO NOT TAKE THIS!!!
