Zinc effective for acne treatment
Serum zinc levels and efficacy of zinc treatment in acne vulgaris: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how zinc affects acne through a systematic review and meta-analysis that looked at two main questions. First, we wanted to know if there are differences in zinc levels between people with acne and those without. Second, we examined how effective zinc treatments are for managing acne.

Our findings showed that individuals with acne had noticeably lower serum zinc levels compared to those in the control group. Furthermore, when we looked at treatments, those who received zinc showed a significant reduction in their inflammatory papule count—a common symptom of acne. Importantly, we noted that side effects from zinc supplementation were similar to those seen in other treatments, suggesting that zinc is safe to use.

Overall, acne patients appear to benefit from improved zinc levels, especially when zinc is used either on its own or alongside other acne treatments. This gives hope for those looking for effective ways to tackle acne issues!

Zinc shortens cold duration variability
Quantile Treatment Effect of Zinc Lozenges on Common Cold Duration: A Novel Approach to Analyze the Effect of Treatment on Illness Duration.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how zinc lozenges affect the duration of the common cold through a detailed analysis of multiple trials. In particular, we focused on the Mossad (1996) trial involving zinc gluconate lozenges, which revealed an average reduction of cold duration by about 4.0 days. While that sounds promising, our findings through a quantile treatment effect (QTE) analysis tell a more nuanced story.

Interestingly, the QTE analysis showed that for individuals suffering from lengthy colds lasting 15 to 17 days, the zinc lozenges could shorten their illness by as much as 8 days. On the flip side, those with shorter, 2-day colds only experienced a 1-day reduction in sickness. This suggests that while zinc may help, its effectiveness varies significantly depending on the initial duration of the cold, making the overall average effect less informative than we might think.

Our examination extended to three trials that used zinc acetate lozenges, yielding a similar average reduction of around 2.7 days. However, again, those averages concealed varying effects for short and long colds, highlighting the importance of looking beyond simple averages in treatment studies.

Overall, we observed that zinc lozenges can indeed help with cold duration, but the extent of that help is very much dependent on how long a person has been suffering. This approach to understanding treatment effects through QTE analysis could have important implications not just for cold treatment but also for analyzing other health outcomes.

Zinc supplementation may benefit CFS
Lower serum zinc in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): relationships to immune dysfunctions and relevance for the oxidative stress status in CFS.
Most Relevant Research
We explored the relationship between serum zinc levels and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in a study that compared patients with CFS to normal volunteers. By using an atomic absorption method, we measured serum zinc concentrations and found that those suffering from CFS had significantly lower levels of zinc compared to healthy individuals.

Interestingly, we observed a trend indicating that lower zinc levels correlated with greater CFS severity. Patients also reported a negative correlation between their zinc levels and their subjective experiences of infection. This suggests that zinc plays a role in the immune dysfunction commonly seen in CFS.

Furthermore, we noted that lower serum zinc was associated with higher levels of inflammatory markers and certain defects in the early activation of T cells. Since zinc acts as a potent antioxidant, our findings indicate that CFS is linked to increased oxidative stress in these patients. Given this, it may be beneficial for some CFS patients to consider zinc supplements as part of their treatment approach.

Zinc cream alleviates cold sores
A randomized clinical trial on the treatment of oral herpes with topical zinc oxide/glycine.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to explore the effectiveness of a zinc oxide/glycine cream in treating cold sores caused by facial and circumoral herpes. By dividing 46 participants into two groups, one receiving the zinc treatment and the other a placebo, we aimed to measure how this formulation affected the duration and severity of cold sore symptoms.

Our results were quite promising! Participants who began using the zinc oxide/glycine cream within the first 24 hours of noticing symptoms experienced cold sore lesions that lasted only an average of 5 days, compared to 6.5 days for those on the placebo. Additionally, we noticed a significant reduction in the overall severity of their symptoms, including blistering, soreness, itching, and tingling.

As for side effects, subjects treated with the zinc cream experienced only minor and reversible issues typical of ionic zinc salt solutions. This indicates that the zinc oxide/glycine cream is not only effective but also safe for treating cold sores, presenting a valuable option for many people seeking relief from this common condition.

Zinc may boost bone density
Treatment for osteoporosis in people with beta-thalassaemia.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how zinc supplementation might help with back pain in individuals with beta-thalassaemia. The research included a randomized controlled trial with 42 participants, where some received zinc while others were given a placebo.

Results showed that zinc supplementation likely increased the bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine and hip after 12 to 18 months of treatment. This improvement in bone health could suggest potential benefits in pain relief, although the study didn’t directly measure back pain outcomes.

Even though the findings about BMD improvements are promising, we should be cautious. The trial didn't provide direct evidence on whether zinc specifically alleviates back pain. It’s essential to recognize that while we observed positive changes in bone density, interpreting this as a definitive solution for back pain would be premature.

Thus, further research is necessary to connect zinc's effects on bone health to actual pain relief in order to offer clearer guidance on its use as a treatment for back pain.

Zinc counters heart cell injury
Zn protects H9C2 cardiomyocytes by alleviating MAMs-associated apoptosis and calcium signaling dysregulation.
Most Relevant Research
We set out to investigate how zinc might help protect heart cells from damage caused by a lack of blood flow, known as myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI). Using H9C2 cells, which are derived from rat heart tissue, we simulated this injury by depriving these cells of oxygen and then reintroducing it while treating them with zinc.

Through this process, we found that zinc treatment significantly increased cell viability compared to those that did not receive zinc. Cells exposed to ischemia showed typical signs of trauma, like heightened levels of apoptosis—or programmed cell death—and calcium overload, which can further damage cells.

Interestingly, zinc seemed to tackle these issues by lowering the levels of certain proteins related to cell death. It also played a role in regulating calcium levels by interacting with various cellular pathways. In fact, when we silenced specific proteins involved in these pathways, the protective benefits of zinc were even more pronounced.

Our findings suggest that zinc can relieve the harmful effects of ischemia by mitigating cell death and regulating calcium overload, which offers hope for future treatments for heart-related conditions impacted by blood flow interruptions.

Zinc deficiency impacts brain function
Proteomics analysis in rats reveals convergent mechanisms between major depressive disorder and dietary zinc deficiency.
Most Relevant Research
We aimed to uncover the connection between dietary zinc deficiency and symptoms associated with major depressive disorder (MDD). In our study, we used rats fed either a zinc-adequate diet or one deficient in zinc for four weeks.

We then analyzed the changes in protein expression in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus—two brain areas closely linked to depression. This approach allowed us to see how zinc deficiency impacts the brain at a molecular level.

Our findings revealed that significant alterations occurred in proteins related to zinc transport and mitochondrial function due to the deficiency. In particular, we saw a notable decline in the activity of complex I of the mitochondrial energy production pathway in the prefrontal cortex.

These results suggest that low zinc levels can disrupt vital brain functions, potentially contributing to the development of depressive symptoms. This highlights the importance of maintaining adequate zinc levels for mental health.

Zinc benefits heart health post-cisplatin
Role of zinc oxide nanoparticles supplementation on alleviate side effects of cisplatin induced cardiotoxicity in rats.
Most Relevant Research
We explored the potential benefits of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) in preventing heart damage caused by cisplatin, a powerful chemotherapy drug known for its efficacy but also for its side effects, particularly cardiotoxicity.

In our study, rats were divided into several groups, including control groups and those receiving different doses of ZnONPs. We specifically looked at a range of health markers such as lipid levels, antioxidant activity, and inflammation in heart tissues to see how ZnONPs could help soften the impact of cisplatin on heart health.

As we gradually increased the dosage of ZnONPs to 50 mg/kg, we observed significant improvements across the various health parameters examined. Notably, at this optimal dose, the rats' heart health markers showed a remarkable recovery, aligning closely with those in the healthy control group. This suggests that ZnONPs effectively protect heart tissue from oxidative stress and inflammation associated with cisplatin treatment.

Overall, our findings highlight the promising role of zinc oxide nanoparticles in mitigating heart damage linked to cancer treatments, paving the way for further research in this arena.

Zinc improves cholesterol levels
Effect of Zinc Supplementation on Lipid Profile and Body Composition in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A GRADE-Assessed Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-analysis.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how zinc supplementation affects cholesterol levels and body composition in patients with type 2 diabetes. By reviewing data from nineteen randomized controlled trials, involving 1,357 participants, we uncovered significant findings regarding lipid profiles.

Our results revealed that zinc supplementation leads to reduced levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Specifically, we noted reductions of 17.41 mg/dL in triglycerides, 19.60 mg/dL in total cholesterol, and 8.80 mg/dL in LDL-C. Furthermore, we observed an increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) by 4.82 mg/dL, which is often termed "good" cholesterol.

While zinc appears to positively influence cholesterol levels, it's interesting to note that it did not have a significant impact on body weight. The body mass index (BMI) did show a slight decrease of 0.53 kg/m², but overall body weight remained unchanged.

In conclusion, our findings suggest that zinc supplementation could be a beneficial strategy for improving cholesterol levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes, thus contributing positively to their overall health and well-being.

Zinc's uncertain role in hypothyroidism
The Effect of Some Micronutrients Multi-Supplementation on Thyroid Function, Metabolic Features and Quality of Life in Patients Treating With Levothyroxine and Vitamin D: A Double-blind, Randomized Controlled Trial.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a study to investigate the effects of micronutrient supplementation, including zinc, on thyroid function and overall quality of life in patients with hypothyroidism. Our trial involved 104 participants who were receiving levothyroxine and vitamin D. They were randomly assigned to either a group that received a mix of essential nutrients or a placebo group over eight weeks.

We measured various health markers before and after this period, including thyroid hormone levels, cholesterol, insulin resistance, and blood pressure. Our findings suggested that the group receiving the micronutrient supplement experienced improvements in insulin resistance and overall quality of life. However, it’s important to note that the specific effects of zinc alone are somewhat difficult to isolate, as it was part of a combination of nutrients being tested.

Ultimately, while the study indicates potential benefits of micronutrient supplementation for thyroid function in hypothyroid patients, further trials are necessary to clearly define the role of zinc and other nutrients in this context.

Zinc may relieve allergy symptoms
Alleviating effect of intranasal zinc on symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated how intranasal zinc (Zn) treatment affects symptoms of allergic rhinitis (AR), specifically focusing on individuals suffering from Japanese cedar pollinosis (JCP), a common seasonal allergy. In our study, we monitored 57 control subjects and 44 patients from preseason through the allergy season, observing the levels of Zn in both nasal fluid and serum.

Our findings showed that after exposure to pollen, the level of zinc in the nasal lining fluid of JCP patients significantly increased, while their serum zinc levels notably decreased compared to the control group during the JCP season. To delve deeper, we used model mice that could mimic these changes and the allergy symptoms of the patients.

The results from this mouse study were promising. We observed that treating these mice with a dose of zinc, similar to what humans might use, led to a notable improvement in their allergy symptoms. Additionally, the number of mucin-secreting goblet cells, which indicate a response to allergies, significantly decreased following the zinc treatment.

Our study points towards the potential of using intranasal zinc as a way to alleviate allergy symptoms, suggesting a new approach to managing allergic rhinitis.

New treatment reduces digital dermatitis
Investigation on the effectiveness of a new hoof care product to sustainably reduce and prevent digital dermatitis in dairy cow herds.
Most Relevant Research
We embarked on an investigation to understand whether a new hoof care product featuring iron, zinc, and aluminum can effectively reduce and prevent digital dermatitis (DD) in dairy cows. In a controlled trial involving over 130 dairy cows, we treated one hind foot of each cow twice a week with this product while leaving the other foot untreated for comparison.

The results were revealing! Our analysis indicated that the use of the hoof care product significantly reduced the severity of DD compared to the untreated group. In fact, cows treated with the product had a much lower chance of developing lesions. The outcome showed that in the control group, the odds of having a lesion were four times higher than in the treated group, and the likelihood of experiencing an active lesion versus an inactive one was even more pronounced.

Interestingly, we also observed positive outcomes in heifers, with only one developing an active lesion in the treated group, showcasing the potential for this product to help manage and prevent DD even before these young cows enter the herd. The study indicates that the combination of ingredients in this hoof care product could be a promising alternative to traditional, harsher treatments.

While zinc is included as one of the components in the product, it's essential to note that we can't isolate its effect on ulcers from the other ingredients. Therefore, we can't definitively conclude zinc's sole effectiveness when it comes to DD treatment, but the overall findings are encouraging for improving hoof health in dairy cows.

Zinc’s effects on colds
Zinc for prevention and treatment of the common cold: Summary of a Cochrane review.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how zinc might help in treating and preventing the common cold. The study focused on zinc's effects, isolating it from other treatments to understand its true impact on cold symptoms. By doing this, the researchers aimed to clarify whether zinc could genuinely shorten the duration of a cold or alleviate its symptoms.

The findings were intriguing but showed that zinc might not yield significant benefits for everyone. While some individuals reported a slight reduction in cold symptoms, the evidence did not strongly support zinc as an effective treatment overall.

This means that, for those seeking relief from a nasty cold, zinc alone might not be the go-to solution we hoped it would be. It’s essential to consider this information when deciding on a cold treatment plan and to approach zinc with realistic expectations.

Zinc nanoparticle aids gout treatment
A novel zinc ferrite nanoparticle protects against MSU-induced gout arthritis via Nrf2/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated how zinc, specifically in the form of zinc ferrite nanoparticles (ZFN), can impact gouty arthritis. The research focused on finding a safe and effective treatment option to help people dealing with this painful condition, which often affects various age groups.

To explore this, we created ZFN, which has notable activities that help combat inflammation and oxidative stress, while also being gentle on the body. What’s interesting about ZFN is that its low zinc content helps avoid some of the common issues with other zinc-based treatments, such as toxicity. We tested ZFN through both laboratory studies and real-life models to see its effectiveness fully.

Our results were promising! We observed that ZFN significantly reduced inflammation and oxidative stress associated with gout. It seems to work by influencing important body pathways, particularly weakening signals that promote inflammation while boosting the body's natural defenses. This modulation signifies a powerful method for treating gout without the heavy side effects of current medications.

The discoveries we made in this study not only highlight a new potential treatment for gouty arthritis but also demonstrate the wider applicability of nanotechnology in health. The protective benefits of ZFN pave the way for more developments in treating inflammatory conditions like gout.

Zinc's complex role in prostate cancer
Prostate cancer-selective anticancer action of an oxindole derivative via HO-1-mediated disruption of metabolic reprogramming.
Most Relevant Research
We explored the relationship between zinc levels and prostate cancer treatments, particularly focusing on a novel compound known as 3D. This compound showed a strong potential to target prostate cancer cells, contributing to a decrease in their proliferation rates.

Our analysis revealed that compound 3D selectively impacted key metabolic processes in prostate cancer cells by suppressing factors related to energy production, such as lactate levels. Interestingly, it also reduced the activity of transporters involved in zinc absorption while leaving those responsible for zinc export untouched.

We also found that the effectiveness of 3D could be reversed with zinc treatment, highlighting a complicated interaction between zinc and this therapeutic approach. While the compound successfully lowered zinc levels in cells and inhibited cancer growth, it is essential to note that we did not find significant benefits from zinc treatment by itself in the context of this study.

Overall, our findings suggest that targeting zinc metabolism and enhancing heme oxygenase-1 expression could be a promising strategy in prostate cancer therapy, more so than the direct application of zinc itself. The results illustrate the potential for combining innovative small molecules with an understanding of cancer metabolism in the development of treatment strategies.

Zinc treatment impacts flu virus entry
Epipharyngeal Abrasive Therapy Down-regulates the Expression of Cav1.2: A Key Molecule in Influenza Virus Entry.
Most Relevant Research
In our study, we examined how epipharyngeal abrasive therapy (EAT), which includes the use of zinc chloride, affects the expression of a key molecule known as Cav1.2. This molecule is essential for the influenza virus to enter cells, making it a crucial target in flu prevention strategies.

We compared two groups of patients: those who received EAT and those who did not. Our findings revealed that the levels of Cav1.2 were significantly lower in the EAT group, at a striking 4.19 times less than in the non-treated group. This suggests that the squamous metaplasia induced by EAT—which is a process of changing the epithelium—could be a beneficial approach to limiting flu infections.

The results of the study highlight zinc's potential indirect role in flu prevention by remarking on its contribution to lowering the expression of a critical receptor for the virus. Although we didn't isolate the effects of zinc alone, the findings indicate that treatments involving zinc, like EAT, may offer a straightforward way to help limit the impact of influenza.

ZnO NPs protect heart health
In vivo cardioprotective effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles against doxorubicin-induced myocardial infarction by enhancing the antioxidant system and nitric oxide production.
Most Relevant Research
We aimed to explore how zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) could protect the heart from damage caused by doxorubicin, a drug that can lead to serious heart issues, including myocardial infarction (MI). Our study involved rats that were injected with doxorubicin to induce MI and then treated with ZnO NPs at two different doses.

Throughout the research, we observed significant improvements in heart health among the rats that received these nanoparticles. Specifically, their heart function showed recovery, with important biochemical markers reflecting less damage. The lower dose of ZnO NPs was especially effective, aiding the antioxidant system and boosting nitric oxide production, which is vital for heart function.

Our findings suggest that ZnO NPs could be a promising way to counteract the cardiotoxic effects of doxorubicin. This insight opens new avenues for treatment strategies aimed at patients who need chemotherapy without risking their heart health.

Zinc supplementation benefits MS models
Dietary zinc status is associated with ZnT3 (SLC30A3), IL-6 gene expressions and spinal cord tissue damage in spinal cord tissue in a cuprizone-induced rat Multiple Sclerosis model.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how dietary zinc levels influence spinal cord damage and gene expressions associated with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) using a cuprizone-induced rat model. The study included 46 adult male Wistar rats divided into five groups, with some receiving zinc supplementation while others followed a zinc-deficient diet.

After eight weeks of treatment, we found that the rats with MS symptoms showed elevated markers of tissue damage and inflammation, particularly in the groups that lacked zinc. Notably, those receiving zinc supplementation exhibited significantly reduced levels of harmful substances, bringing them back closer to control levels.

Zinc intake affects tinnitus risk
The Association between Dietary Intakes of Vitamins and Minerals with Tinnitus.
Most Relevant Research
We examined how dietary intakes of vitamins and minerals, particularly zinc, could influence the onset and presence of tinnitus, a condition characterized by phantom sounds in the ears. In a study involving nearly 3,000 participants over the age of 50, we identified cases of tinnitus to determine if their dietary habits played a role in their experience of this condition.

The findings indicated that while there were no significant associations between overall vitamin and mineral intake and existing tinnitus prevalence, zinc intake stood out in relation to developing tinnitus over time. Specifically, we observed that lower zinc consumption was linked to a 44% increased risk of experiencing tinnitus over a ten-year period.

Furthermore, we noted that iron intake also showed a significant correlation, with lower iron levels raising incident tinnitus risk by approximately 35%. These results highlight the potential importance of maintaining adequate zinc and iron levels in our diets to help reduce the risk of developing tinnitus.

Our analysis of data from a large genetics cohort revealed a significant finding: rare genetic variants that reduce the function of the zinc transporter SLC39A5 were linked to better metabolic profiles and lower T2D risk.

To delve deeper into these results, we used both laboratory and animal models. We developed mice that completely lacked SLC39A5 and observed promising outcomes. These mice showcased improved liver function and lower blood sugar levels after being subjected to obesity challenges, whether congenital or diet-induced.

Notably, this improvement seemed to be associated with increased levels of zinc in the liver, which activated key signaling pathways involved in metabolism, such as AMPK and AKT. Furthermore, these mice exhibited less liver inflammation and fibrosis in models of diet-induced non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Together, these findings position SLC39A5 as a potentially valuable target for treating liver-related metabolic disorders, emphasizing zinc's crucial role in managing liver health and blood sugar regulation.

Zinc's limited effect on dizziness
Prevention of Recurrent Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: The Role of Combined Supplementation with Vitamin D and Antioxidants.
Most Relevant Research
This study examined the effectiveness of a nutritional supplement containing zinc, among other ingredients, in preventing the recurrence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a condition that can cause intense dizziness. We followed a diverse group of 128 patients with a history of frequent BPPV episodes. They were divided into three groups based on their vitamin D levels and received different treatment plans.

In one group, those with low vitamin D received a daily supplement containing zinc, along with other antioxidants and vitamin D3. We noticed a remarkable decrease in BPPV relapses in this group after six months compared to where they started. However, for the groups that had sufficient vitamin D and particularly those receiving zinc without vitamin D, we did not find significant benefits in reducing dizziness recurrence.

While zinc was part of a combined treatment approach, it didn’t demonstrate a standalone positive impact on dizziness. Our findings suggest that while zinc might play a role alongside other supplements, it shouldn't be solely relied upon for preventing BPPV relapses in patients with sufficient vitamin D levels.

Zinc's role in heartburn relief
Esophageal ulcer related to zinc deficiency following a total gastrectomy.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated how zinc affects heartburn through the case of a 76-year-old Japanese man who experienced significant discomfort after undergoing a total gastrectomy. For two weeks, he suffered from a sore throat, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Endoscopy revealed deep, craterlike ulcers in his esophagus, but tests for viral infections were negative.

After initial treatment, his symptoms returned, prompting further investigation. Eventually, we found that his serum zinc level was low at 38 µg/dL, which led to a diagnosis of zinc deficiency. Following oral zinc supplementation, the patient reported relief from his symptoms and a noticeable improvement in the esophageal ulcers observed during a follow-up endoscopy.

Over the five years since his treatment, the patient has continued to take zinc supplements and has not faced similar issues again. This case suggests that zinc can play a crucial role in treating heartburn issues related to ulcers, especially in those with a deficiency.

Zinc treatment reduces nausea risk
Randomized, multicenter, active-controlled open-label study of NPC-25, zinc histidine hydrate, (non-inferiority to NOBELZIN™, zinc acetate dihydrate) for patients with hypozincemia.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a study to evaluate how effective NPC-25, a new form of zinc, is compared to a well-known treatment, NOBELZIN™, for patients with low zinc levels. Participants in this trial had their zinc levels checked and were grouped to receive either NPC-25 or NOBELZIN™.

For a period of up to 24 weeks, we aimed to maintain their zinc levels within a specific target range while closely monitoring for side effects. One of our main goals was to see if NPC-25 could maintain these target zinc levels similarly to NOBELZIN™.

Our findings revealed that NPC-25 was indeed non-inferior to NOBELZIN™, meaning it worked just as well. Importantly, we also observed that those taking NPC-25 reported fewer digestive issues, like nausea and vomiting. This suggests that while both treatments were effective, NPC-25 might be the gentler option.

Zinc oxide mitigates diarrhea impacts
Zinc Oxide Administration Relieves the Diarrhea of ETEC K88-Infected Piglets by Reducing Ileal Apoptosis and Maintaining Gut Microbial Balance.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how zinc oxide (ZnO), often used as a feed additive, affects diarrhea and gut health in piglets infected with the ETEC K88 strain. Through careful observation, we found that piglets suffering from this infection exhibited significantly increased fecal scores compared to those not affected. The ETEC K88 strain harms the small intestine, leading to a loss of villus height and a decrease in important antioxidant activities.

Our findings revealed that ZnO administration counteracts these negative effects effectively. It not only improved the overall health of the intestine but also enhanced its ability to combat oxidative stress. We also observed a balanced restoration of gut microbiota, as ZnO helped normalize the populations of certain beneficial bacteria altered by the infection.

In summary, our study indicates that ZnO can play a vital role in easing diarrhea in piglets infected with ETEC K88 by reducing intestinal damage, supporting antioxidative defenses, and restoring healthy gut flora.

Zinc reduces migraine symptoms
Assessing the Effect of Zinc Supplementation on the Frequency of Migraine Attack, Duration, Severity, Lipid Profile and hs-CRP in Adult Women.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to explore how zinc gluconate affects migraine symptoms in women. Sixty participants, with an average age of 35, were given either 15 mg of zinc per day or a placebo for 12 weeks, allowing us to measure the impact on headache frequency, duration, and intensity.

The results were quite promising; zinc supplementation significantly reduced how often headaches occurred, shortened their duration, and decreased the severity of the migraines reported. Participants in the zinc group experienced notable improvements, as indicated by their responses to the headache severity scale and a disability assessment questionnaire.

Furthermore, we found that zinc also had a positive effect on certain health markers. The serum levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) decreased with zinc supplementation. However, we didn’t observe significant changes in triglycerides or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels after adjusting for baseline values.

In conclusion, zinc supplementation appears to hold beneficial effects on migraine severity and frequency, offering a potential alternative for those who seek relief from these debilitating headaches.
