Alitretinoin improves eczema treatment
The Endogenous Dual Retinoid Receptor Agonist Alitretinoin Exhibits Immunoregulatory Functions on Antigen-Presenting Cells.
Most Relevant Research
We explored the effects of alitretinoin, a form of vitamin A, on chronic hand eczema (CHE). This powerful drug is known to target specific receptors in the skin, offering insights into its method of action. Through our detailed study, we examined skin samples from patients who responded well to alitretinoin treatment.

Our analysis revealed a total of 231 genes that were markedly regulated. We found that alitretinoin primarily impacts keratinocytes, the skin's primary cells, by addressing inflammation and enhancing skin barrier function. This treatment improved the expression of certain protective proteins while fostering the production of hyaluronic acid, a substance that helps hydrate and soothe the skin.

Furthermore, we observed that alitretinoin also affects immune cells, particularly dendritic cells, which play a vital role in our immune response. These cells, when treated with alitretinoin, displayed unique alterations in their appearance and function. They had lower levels of specific markers that typically spur an immune response and stimulated the production of IL-10, a cytokine that promotes immune tolerance. Most impressively, these treated cells were less effective at activating T cells, which are crucial for initiating inflammation.

Our findings indicate that alitretinoin not only treats the visible symptoms of eczema but also helps regulate the immune response, providing a dual approach in the management of chronic hand eczema. Ultimately, these insights show that vitamin A treatment holds significant promise for improving outcomes in eczema patients.

Vitamin A and allergy management
Retinoic Acid (RA): A Critical Immunoregulatory Molecule in Asthma and Allergies.
Most Relevant Research
Our exploration into the effects of vitamin A, particularly its active form known as retinoic acid, revealed some interesting insights regarding allergies. Vitamin A plays a key role in our immune system by helping to regulate immune responses, which is crucial for managing allergic reactions.

Research indicates that retinoic acid can promote the development of regulatory T cells, which are essential for maintaining balance in our immune system. These T cells help to suppress excessive immune responses that can lead to allergies. Additionally, they assist in managing inflammatory responses, which is particularly important for conditions like asthma and allergic reactions.

Notably, studies have shown that levels of retinoic acid are often lower in individuals suffering from asthma and allergies. Moreover, introducing retinoic acid as a treatment has been found to alleviate symptoms associated with allergies and reduce airway inflammation. This suggests that boosting retinoic acid levels in the body might be a promising therapeutic approach for those dealing with allergic conditions.

Overall, we conclude that vitamin A—through its derivative retinoic acid—holds significant potential for improving allergy management by enhancing immune regulation.

Retinoic acid enhances glioma treatment
Retinoic acid-induced alterations enhance eATP-mediated anti-cancer effects in glioma cells: Implications for P2X7 receptor variants as key players.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated how retinoic acid (RA), a derivative of vitamin A, could influence cancer treatment, particularly in glioma, a type of brain tumor. Previous attempts to use RA as a therapeutic option were inconclusive, so we aimed to explore its effects alongside extracellular ATP (eATP) to harness their combined potential.

Our experiments examined two human glioma cell lines, M059K and M059J, to see how they responded to RA-based differentiation. Notably, this process led to changes in the expression of a receptor called P2X7 and reduced the activity of enzymes that break down nucleotides. These modifications contributed to a significant decrease in cell proliferation and migration abilities, as well as an increased sensitivity to the effects of eATP.

Specifically, we found that in the presence of eATP, cell viability decreased by up to 40% in RA-treated M059K cells and 20% in M059J cells. Migration capabilities of the cells were reduced by as much as 60% when exposed to a specific concentration of ATP, showing that the P2X7 receptor plays a major role in mediating these effects.

Our observations suggest that combining retinoic acid with eATP can have anti-cancer benefits by influencing purinergic signaling pathways in glioma cells. This points to the need for further exploration of P2X7 receptor variants as potential therapeutic targets for treating glioma.

Vitamin A's impact on OSA
The role of antioxidant vitamins and selenium in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a case-control study to explore the levels of essential antioxidant nutrients, particularly vitamin A, in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who did not have any other health issues. By categorizing our 146 subjects based on their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores, we examined how these nutrient levels compared between those with mild to severe OSA and healthy individuals.

Our findings revealed that patients with OSA showed increased concentrations of vitamin A as part of their antioxidant response. This suggests that vitamin A and selenium may serve as important defenses against the harmful impacts of OSA. The implication of our research highlights that supplementing with antioxidant nutrients could be a beneficial approach to enhance overall health in individuals suffering from sleep apnea.

However, while there is a positive correlation between vitamin A levels and OSA, it is important to note that the isolated effects of vitamin A were not the primary focus of our study. Therefore, more research is needed to fully unravel its specific role in treating or managing sleep apnea.

Vitamin A reduces pregnancy nausea
Vitamin A or beta-carotene supplementation reduces symptoms of illness in pregnant and lactating Nepali women.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a double-masked, placebo-controlled trial involving 15,832 Nepali women to explore how vitamin A and beta-carotene supplementation affects pregnancy-related nausea and overall illness symptoms. Our observations showed that while there was no noticeable impact during the early stages of pregnancy, vitamin A supplementation made a significant difference in late pregnancy.

Specifically, we found that women who received vitamin A experienced a reduction in nausea. Additionally, symptoms such as faintness and night blindness were also less prevalent in those women. Beta-carotene supplementation did not yield the same benefits for nausea, highlighting the unique role of vitamin A in managing these symptoms.

Moreover, supplementation with vitamin A contributed to a shorter labor duration, which is promising for expectant mothers. It also helped reduce the postpartum risks of conditions like night blindness and loose stools. Overall, our findings indicate that ensuring adequate vitamin A intake can be important for improving reproductive health in women, particularly in areas with limited healthcare access.

Vitamin A's potential in arthritis treatment
Immunomodulatory Microparticles Epigenetically Modulate T Cells and Systemically Ameliorate Autoimmune Arthritis.
Most Relevant Research
We explored the potential of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), a form of vitamin A, in treating autoimmune arthritis. The research focused on how ATRA can help improve the body's immune response while reducing inflammation associated with arthritis.

Through innovative use of biodegradable microparticles, ATRA is released directly in the joints over a sustained period, enhancing the body's immune activity. This unique approach helped transform naïve T cells into protective regulatory T cells, which in turn helped to mitigate inflammatory responses.

Notably, the sustained release of ATRA not only improved joint health but also affected the entire body without leading to widespread immune suppression. In animal models of arthritis, those treated with ATRA showed less joint damage and inflammation compared to untreated counterparts, suggesting a promising avenue for managing this challenging condition.

Overall, these findings illuminate the role of vitamin A in potentially modifying the disease course for those battling autoimmune arthritis, indicating exciting new possibilities for treatment that could offer hope for improved patient outcomes.

Vitamin A supports immune response
Effect of oral vitamin A supplementation on host immune response to infectious bronchitis virus infection in specific pathogen-free chicken.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a study to investigate how vitamin A supplementation affects the immune response in chickens infected with the infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). In our approach, we used 40 one-day-old specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens, dividing them into two groups. One group received an oral vitamin A treatment daily, while the other group was given a placebo until they were 21 days old.

Afterward, both groups were infected with a pathogenic strain of IBV. Our findings showed that while vitamin A supplementation didn't significantly alter the disease's clinical course or the chickens' overall growth, it had some notable effects on their immune response. Specifically, we observed increased levels of IBV-specific antibodies and a decrease in viral load in certain tissues among the vitamin A group.

Interestingly, vitamin A appeared to also suppress some immune responses, leading to lower expression levels of certain molecules related to inflammation and immune regulation. While vitamin A helped improve specific aspects of the immune response, it did not completely cure the chickens or prevent infection.

Overall, we can conclude that while vitamin A supplementation can offer some benefits in terms of boosting immunity and managing viral replication, it doesn't drastically change the outcome of IBV infections in chickens.

Vitamin A benefits thyroid function
The effect of vitamin A supplementation on thyroid function in premenopausal women.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a thorough investigation into how vitamin A supplementation might impact thyroid function, particularly focusing on women who are premenopausal and have varying body weights. Our study was a robust, four-month randomized controlled trial involving 84 healthy women aged 17 to 50. Among them, 56 women were classified as obese, while 28 fell into the nonobese category.

Throughout the study, we administered 25,000 IU of vitamin A or a placebo to the obese participants, while nonobese participants received vitamin A as well. Before and after the supplementation period, we measured key thyroid markers, including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total thyroxine (T4), total triiodothyronine (T3), and proteins associated with vitamin A transport.

Our findings revealed that vitamin A supplementation significantly reduced TSH concentrations in both the obese and nonobese groups, suggesting it may help mitigate the risk of subclinical hypothyroidism. Interestingly, we also noticed an increase in serum T3 levels among those treated with vitamin A. However, T4 levels decreased across all groups, including those not receiving vitamin A.

Overall, it appears that vitamin A may serve as a beneficial intervention for thyroid function in women, particularly those at risk for hypothyroidism. This research highlights an accessible avenue to better support thyroid health through dietary supplementation.

Vitamin A mitigates lung cancer
Regulation of inflammation and COX-2 gene expression in benzo (a) pyrene induced lung carcinogenesis in mice by all trans retinoic acid (ATRA).
Most Relevant Research
We aimed to understand how all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), a form of vitamin A, influences lung cancer development caused by benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) exposure in mice. The study involved a thorough examination of the overall health of the mice, including body and organ weights, blood tests, and tissue analysis for any signs of damage or inflammation.

In our observations, B(a)P significantly harmed the mice, leading to weight loss and increased organ weight, particularly in the liver and lungs. Blood analysis revealed a concerning decrease in healthy blood cells and an increase in inflammatory markers, indicating an unhealthy state. However, we found that when these mice were treated with ATRA, their conditions improved remarkably.

The treated mice regained weight, saw improvements in their blood parameters, and exhibited lower levels of cancer-related inflammation. Notably, the expression of the COX-2 gene—an important player in inflammation and cancer—was dramatically reduced with ATRA treatment in both lung and liver tissues. This suggests that ATRA effectively counteracts the inflammatory effects and may help prevent the initial stages of cancer caused by B(a)P exposure.

Overall, our findings highlight the potential of vitamin A in mitigating some of the risks associated with lung cancer development due to environmental carcinogens, supporting further exploration of its role in cancer prevention.

Vitamin A's role in anxiety management
Crabp1 Modulates HPA Axis Homeostasis and Anxiety-like Behaviors by Altering FKBP5 Expression.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how vitamin A, more specifically its active form retinoic acid (RA), impacts anxiety levels. In this study, researchers discovered that a specific protein, cellular RA binding protein 1 (Crabp1), plays a crucial role in regulating responses to stress. Mice lacking Crabp1 showed significantly lower levels of anxiety and less stress-induced hormone release, indicating that Crabp1 dampens the body's stress response.

By examining the interactions between Crabp1 and another protein called FKBP5, we observed that reducing Crabp1 levels led to decreased FKBP5 expression. This is important because lower FKBP5 levels lessened feedback inhibition in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which in turn helped reduce anxiety-like behaviors. It was noted that stress and RA can actually increase Crabp1 levels, which may heighten FKBP5 expression and possibly raise the risk of anxiety disorders.

Essentially, this study sheds light on the complex relationship between vitamin A, Crabp1, and anxiety, suggesting that while Crabp1 modulates stress responses beneficially, an overabundance can potentially increase anxiety risks.

Vitamin A toxicity's impact on headaches
A Rare Case Report of Benign Intracranial Hypertension Caused by Hypervitaminosis A.
Most Relevant Research
We examined a rare case involving a 13-year-old girl who experienced symptoms of headache and visual disturbances due to benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) related to vitamin A toxicity. This condition was characterized by elevated pressure inside her skull, which led to her experiencing severe headaches, photophobia, and vomiting.

After conducting various tests, including magnetic resonance imaging and a lumbar puncture, we confirmed the diagnosis of BIH. Treatment was initiated with acetazolamide, a medication commonly used to reduce intracranial pressure. Although the study primarily focuses on the condition resulting from vitamin A excess, the use of acetazolamide makes it challenging to isolate the effect of vitamin A on headache relief specifically.

What's particularly noteworthy in this case is the significant elevation of serum vitamin A levels, which aligned with her symptoms. Following treatment, this patient showed a remarkable clinical improvement, including a reduction in papilledema during regular eye check-ups. Within just two weeks after starting treatment, she was discharged symptom-free, highlighting how important it is to consider vitamin A levels in children presenting with similar symptoms.

This case serves as a reminder for clinicians regarding the potential consequences of vitamin A toxicity, especially when evaluating children with headaches correlated to papilledema.

Good composition, fast delivery, high-quality packaging, and nothing was damaged. The capsules are a tad large but easy to swallow. I've taken one daily for 10 days and noticed more energy, stopped headaches, and improved mood. I recommend it, especially for those interested in sports or on a diet. Omega-3 energises and replenishes what the body lacks.
