Unusable! Tastes Like Poison!

This is the most odiferous, malodorous, noxious, foul tasting, and unpalatable liquid known to mankind! I followed the directions and mixed it with sweet and flavorful homemade carrot and sweet potato baby food, that my 7 month old daughter normally loves. It smelled horribly rank, but based on other people's reviews, I figured it couldn't taste that bad. I tried feeding it to her and my normally voracious eater balked, but bravely gagged down 4 small spoonfuls before she started to cry and spit and clamp her hands over her little mouth. At this point, I tasted it. The only taste I can compare it to is the aftertaste I had when I had morning sickness and vomited up all my prenatal vitamins. It tastes of bile, rotten fish, rusty metal, and death! It's been 20 minutes and I still keep tasting it. I made her a fresh bowl, without poly-vi-sol, but my poor child won't eat anything else, because she doesn't trust me now. I don't know how I'm supposed to get her to take this stuff. I'm pretty sure it's impossible. Also, as a minor side note, the packaging was very hard to get into. The seal didn't have a tear line and the baby proof cap was unusually stuck. All that wouldn't matter if the vitamin itself was good, however

My daughter has been taking this since she was born

My daughter was born at 35 weeks, so pediatrician recommended to give her 1ml per day. I mix in a bottle of formula and she has been able to take it without a problem. I tried to sneak this in my 3 year old's juices but he can taste it immediately and stops drinking. My point is that the taste might be an issue depending on your child. I noticed that the liquid color is much lighter from the ones I purchased at the drugstore. The drugstore bought was really dark, like molasses. The coloration from the ones I get from Amazon is closer to honey. I will try to take a side-by-side picture for reference

Nice iron supplement that comes with a dropper

Fer-In-Sol is a liquid iron supplement. If I have to make sense of the name then I would guess that Fer is from ferrum/ferrous for iron, and Sol in chemistry means a liquid solution which has fine particles of a solid mixed into it. So Fer-In-Sol seems to mean iron in liquid solution. The liquid form is iron supplement seems to be the easiest to absorb by the body, as compared to other forms of supplements e.g. tablets,syrup, or powder. Our doctor prescribed our son to take Fer-In-Sol after blood-test found him to be anemic. Drinking too much cow milk (more than 24 oz) in a day has been linked iron deficiency (cow's milk hampers iron absorption in body and cow's milk itself is low in iron so the more milk the child drinks the less room will be there for other food that are good sources of iron.) We had to ask our doctor specifically for iron test. Our neighbours had told us that they themselves had to ask explicitly for an iron test and found out that their son had anemia as well. Fer-In-Sol comes with a child-resistant safety cap (that needs to be pressed down in order to open) and a dropper that can also be screwed on top of the bottle. The dropper also has the safety mechanism as well. DOSAGE: Accidental overdose of iron containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Because of the risks and severe side-effects of iron overdose, it is highly recommend to refer the Doctors advise as to how much and if iron supplementation is needed. Our doctor asked us to use two droppers per day. Generally children require between 7-11 mg of iron daily, but because iron absorption is difficult the doctor may prescribe a higher dose than the recommended dietary allowance. DIRECTIONS Even thought Fer-In-Sol has natural flavours, it still doesn't taste good at all. Our doctor had advised us to mix it with juice. We mix the iron supplement with apple juice and use the syringe that comes with Tylenol to feed the supplement to out son. It is recommended to take this in early morning with empty stomach. Also, taking it with juices that conatin Vitamin C is also beneficial since Vitamin C aids in absorption of iron. SIDE EFFECTS Taking supplemental iron has some side-effects (even if taking in quantity prescribed by doctor.) Iron supplement usually causes constipation and bowel movement to be of darker color (almost black.) It can also result in abdominal pain. Therefore it is recommended to drink lots of fluids while on iron supplements. If the child is suffering from iron overdose, he may experience severe vomiting, diarrhea, bluish skin, or general weakness. Therefore it is quite necessary to not overdo it and follow the advise of doctor

It's improved my son's overall health.

I can see improvement on my son's health , appetites after 1 week using this vitamin. Somehow it's regulates his sleeping time too. He sleep more during night time which usually he only sleeping 4-6 hours but now he sleep between 8-10 hours. Very happy with the results, the only complaint I have is the taste. Well , I can't expect vitamin to be taste good but if enfamil can pull it up to improve the taste they'll get my 5 star for taste also. Great product , overall I'm very happy with the product

Your baby will hate this stuff but you must persist!

Will be very honest, I wouldn't drink this myself, it's utterly vile. Very strong smell and taste of iron. That said, I insist on feeding this to all my kids since they were infants till they graduate onto multivitamin gummy. Not because I'm sadistic but because I know iron is essential for them. Pampering to their taste buds is secondary to their well-being. All of them ate without too much hiccups. Occasionally they will regurgitate, it's that disgusting, so be prepared. Introduce to your baby as young as possible. Liberal use of distraction, like children's music videos on ipad, strongly recommended. Pro-tip: Lay them on changing pad before feeding as the iron stains strongly. Peroxide may help if applied liberally and immediately

Inconsistency in color and odor ok, according to customer service

I was hoping to find an infant Iron supplement that didn't add all the other vitamins. This fit the bill! At first baby did not like the taste, but after two weeks of consistently giving it daily, baby has gotten used to it. Update: I wrote the above while using the first bottle I purchased. The drops were light gold in color with a metalic (Iron-like) odor. The second bottle I opened (which I had ordered and received at the same time as the first) was clear in color and had a minty scent. I called customer service thinking there was an error in one of the bottles due to the difference in color and odor. The customer service rep explained that both colors and scents were in the range of colors and scents to expect from this product and that both were considered safe to give to a 9 month old infant. She said the variation was due to anything from the age of the product to the tempatures during storage and delivery

Save a chicken

My chicken was unbalanced and extremely tired. We were treating it as if it was a vitamin E deficiency. We added a few drops in the beak than a few drops in the water supply. The chicken was back to normal within a few hours. We were told don't use iron or vitamins with iron for chickens. Purchased April 2021 and expires October 2021

Heads up!

Make sure you split up the doses because it tastes like total crap and my son spit it out and didn't want his bottle anymore. It's very pungent and just has an overwhelming sense to it. We ended up putting half the recommended dose in his morning bottle and then another half for his nighttime bottle. This dramatically decreased the smell and flavor and he doesnt even notice it now. Also, make sure that you shake it up well before adding it to the milk or formula and also shake it real good when it's in the bottle too. If you dont it will latch onto the milk fat or formula sediment and it will clump up and settle at the bottom of the bottle. If that happens it's fine because you can then just shake it up to get a good mix but at first its alarming since there are tan colored clumps at the bottom of the bottle. Half doses split up throughout the day and shake well. That is all. Happy parenting

Leaves the taste of change in your mouth for hours.

Pediatrician recommended "Fer-In-Sol" for our 9 month old. Not enough Iron in diet. I tried a drop, and it tasted like pennies in my mouth for hours. I tried juice and other strong flavors to no avail. Could not get the taste of change out of my mouth. I give our baby a full dropper of the stuff every day, but I wait until he's mad. It's almost a punishment for a baby. By far, the worst part of my day. I follow my doctor's orders, but I wish this was better tasting

Great supplrmentation

This was what was given to my daughter in the NICU so we continued use per doctors recommendations. We just put 1 dropperful in with a bottle of breastmilk and she didn't even notice. Now we still mix 1 dropper with a cup of milk. Still no issues with her taking it. Of course the taste is horrible...it is a liquid vitamin with iron. It isn't going to taste good. If you are looking for supplementation for your baby, this is a great product
