Vitamin C improves diabetes control
Effects of water-soluble vitamins on glycemic control and insulin resistance in adult type 2 diabetes: an umbrella review of meta-analyses.
Most Relevant Research
We examined the effects of vitamin C supplementation on diabetes, focusing specifically on glycemic control and insulin resistance. Our analysis included a comprehensive review of fourteen systematic reviews and meta-analyses that assessed five different water-soluble vitamins: B-1, B-3, biotin, B-9 (folic acid), and C.

The findings revealed that vitamin C can significantly improve glycemic control in individuals with type 2 diabetes. We noticed reductions in fasting blood glucose levels and HbA1c, especially when supplementation lasted longer than 30 days. This is promising news for those managing diabetes, as it suggests that incorporating vitamin C could be beneficial.

Furthermore, we found that folic acid also plays a role in improving insulin resistance. However, there is a clear need for more well-designed randomized controlled trials to solidify these findings and develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between water-soluble vitamins and diabetes management.

Alpha-lipoic acid reduces AGEs
Alpha-Lipoic Acid Treatment Reduces the Levels of Advanced End Glycation Products in Type 2 Diabetes Patients with Neuropathy.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated the potential benefits of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) suffering from neuropathy. Over six months, we treated 54 patients with a daily dose of 600 mg of ALA while keeping their current oral medications unchanged. We also included a control group of 24 matched individuals who did not experience neuropathy.

Our findings showed a significant decrease in advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are harmful compounds that can worsen diabetes complications. The levels of AGEs dropped from 11.89 to 10.95 AU/μg, reflecting the positive impact ALA treatment can have. Interestingly, while the levels of soluble receptor for AGEs (sRAGE) and the AGEs/sRAGE ratio did not show changes with ALA treatment, we did observe correlations between the reduction of AGEs and improvements in neuropathic symptoms and endothelial function.

Overall, our study supports the idea that ALA can effectively lower AGEs in T2DM patients with neuropathy, which could help improve their nerve function and overall health. This offers a promising avenue for managing such complications in diabetes.

Vitamin C reduces heartburn symptoms
The safety and efficacy of 2% vitamin C solution spray for relief of mucosal irritation caused by Lugol chromoendoscopy: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, parallel trial.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated how vitamin C, specifically in the form of a 2% vitamin C solution spray, could help alleviate heartburn symptoms following Lugol chromoendoscopy, a procedure that involves staining the esophagus to better visualize abnormalities. In a well-structured study with 240 participants, we used a randomized, double-blind approach to compare the effectiveness of vitamin C to normal saline and sodium thiosulfate solutions.

Our results showed that vitamin C spray significantly reduced both acute heartburn symptoms and late discomfort when compared to the saline solution. Specifically, 33% of participants using vitamin C reported relief from acid regurgitation or heartburn, compared to just 15% with sodium thiosulfate. Additionally, patients noted an improvement in retrosternal pain, with 21% finding relief from the vitamin C treatment versus 9% from sodium thiosulfate.

Furthermore, vitamin C offered a quicker discoloration of the iodine-stained mucosa compared to saline, enhancing the overall experience of the procedure. These findings suggest that incorporating vitamin C spray into post-procedural care could be a helpful strategy for patients facing discomfort after undergoing Lugol chromoendoscopy.

Vitamin C alleviates chemotherapy insomnia
Relief from cancer chemotherapy side effects with pharmacologic vitamin C.
Most Relevant Research
We explored the effects of pharmacologic vitamin C on insomnia related to cancer chemotherapy. In our case study, we worked with a woman battling recurrent breast cancer who was experiencing significant fatigue and lethargy as she underwent weekly chemotherapy sessions.

To combat her sleep disturbances, we administered high doses of vitamin C, 50 grams per session, twice a week. We also employed quality of life and fatigue questionnaires to monitor changes over time.

The results were promising! We observed marked improvements in her insomnia and overall fatigue levels. Furthermore, there was a notable enhancement in her cognitive functioning, without any adverse side effects from the vitamin C treatment.

This case highlights how vitamin C may offer relief from insomnia associated with chemotherapy, providing a new avenue for improving quality of life during cancer treatment.

Can you say "INSOMNIA?" After taking one capsule daily post-lunch, I began experiencing sleep issues, which is unusual for me. I had recently added new supplements to my routine, so I suspected one of them was to blame. Ultimately, I identified THIS supplement as the culprit. The side effects associated with it include insomnia, which you will find if you do a bit of research.
