We aimed to understand how turmeric, specifically its active compound curcumin, affects cholesterol levels in the body. After searching several online databases and analyzing 64 randomized clinical trials, we found that turmeric supplementation can lead to noticeable improvements in key cholesterol metrics.

Specifically, we observed significant reductions in total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (often referred to as "bad" cholesterol). Additionally, there was an increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, known as "good" cholesterol. However, it's important to note that turmeric did not show considerable effects on related apolipoproteins, which are proteins that help carry cholesterol in the blood.

Although these results are promising, we must approach them with caution. The quality of evidence was assessed to be low and very low regarding these outcomes. This means that while turmeric supplementation does seem to help with certain cholesterol levels, more rigorous studies are needed to confirm these benefits and properly evaluate the overall efficacy.

We explored how curcumin, a natural compound found in turmeric, affects platelet activation specifically when stimulated by amyloid peptides associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The research aimed to determine if curcumin could help modulate these potentially harmful blood clotting responses.

Using isolated human platelets, we assessed how curcumin influences platelet aggregation and the production of reactive oxygen species. Our findings revealed that curcumin successfully suppressed platelet aggregation triggered by amyloid peptides. This suppression was linked to a decrease in critical signaling pathways involved in platelet activation.

Interestingly, while curcumin significantly inhibited responses to amyloid peptides, its effects on platelet activation induced by standard physiological triggers like thrombin and convulxin were less pronounced. Granule secretion, another aspect of platelet activation, was completely suppressed by curcumin only in response to the hemostatic stimuli, not in the presence of amyloid peptides.

Overall, it seems that curcumin may offer a targeted approach to mitigate the risk of blood clot formation in individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, particularly concerning the pathological roles of amyloid peptides.

Fantastic miracle supplement for arthritis sufferers! I have Rheumatoid arthritis in my wrists, knees, and sometimes my back. I've been taking Jarrow and Now brands Curcumin for months. I don’t take painkillers, but Curcumin has made my life manageable with significantly less pain and flare-ups. Someone suggested trying the Bio or Super form of Curcumin from Now brands for even better results. To this day, it's a miracle supplement for arthritis like mine, and I now feel almost pain-free. I take one capsule in the morning and one before bed. It energises me, but be cautious with exercise as it can lead to acute pain if overdone. Thanks, iHerb for great prices and fresh supplements.

In a well-structured study involving 101 adults suffering from knee osteoarthritis, we explored the effects of curcumin, a compound derived from turmeric, on knee pain. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 500 mg of a standardized curcumin extract, Curcugen, twice daily, or a placebo for eight weeks, allowing for a clear comparison of its effectiveness.

Our findings revealed promising results. Curcumin significantly reduced knee pain scores and overall pain ratings compared to the placebo. We also noticed that participants taking curcumin showed greater improvements in various physical tests, like the timed up-and-go and six-minute walk tests, indicating enhanced mobility.

Interestingly, 37% of those on curcumin reduced their pain medications, which highlights the potential for curcumin to provide relief and improve quality of life for those with this condition. While the study didn’t explore longer treatment durations or different dosages, these initial results support curcumin's role as a feasible option for managing osteoarthritis pain in the knee.

We conducted a clinical trial to explore how curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, affects women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Over the course of eight weeks, 48 participants took either a daily curcumin capsule or a placebo. This double-blind, placebo-controlled design ensured that neither the participants nor the researchers knew who was receiving the actual treatment, which adds credibility to our findings.

At the end of the study, we observed some encouraging results. Women who took curcumin showed a significant increase in their serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), indicating improved antioxidant levels in their bodies. Additionally, these participants experienced a notable decrease in symptoms like tender and swollen joints, pain intensity, and overall disease activity, as measured by the Disease Activity Score in 28 joints (DAS-28).

While levels of malondialdehyde (MDA)—a marker of oxidative stress—decreased in the curcumin group, the change wasn't significantly different when compared to the placebo group. Overall, our findings support the idea that curcumin can be beneficial for women with RA, particularly in reducing disease activity and enhancing antioxidant levels.

We explored how curcumin, a natural compound found in turmeric, can protect heart cells during events like myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/RI). This type of injury occurs when blood supply returns to the heart after a period of low oxygen, often leading to additional damage to heart tissue.

Through a series of experiments, we observed that curcumin has significant protective effects on heart cells exposed to anoxic stress. Our findings revealed that curcumin improves cell health by reducing cell death, lowering oxidative stress markers, and increasing the body’s antioxidant defenses. Specifically, we noted an increase in important proteins that help protect heart cells, such as HES1 and glutathione peroxidase 4.

Furthermore, curcumin appears to inhibit processes known to contribute to cell death, such as ferroptosis and excessive autophagy, while also reducing apoptosis, which is a form of programmed cell death. This multifaceted approach showcases curcumin's ability to enhance cell survival and maintain heart function during and after ischemic episodes.

Overall, our study supports the potential of turmeric-derived curcumin as a promising natural treatment for reducing the harmful effects of ischemia/reperfusion injury in cardiovascular disease.

In a recent clinical trial, we explored the effectiveness of Curcuma zedoaria Rosc., commonly known as turmeric, in treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This condition is alarmingly widespread, affecting a significant portion of the global population. Over the course of 60 days, we compared turmeric with vitamin E, a standard treatment, to see which had better results.

Our study involved 68 patients with mild to moderate NAFLD, who were divided into two groups. One group received turmeric in capsule form, while the other took vitamin E. We looked at various outcomes, including improvements in liver function, symptoms like digestive issues and malaise, and ultrasound assessments of liver size.

The findings were compelling. We observed that turmeric outperformed vitamin E in alleviating subjective symptoms, such as discomfort in the upper right abdomen, and issues with appetite and digestion. Notably, there were no significant adverse effects reported with turmeric, making it a promising alternative for managing NAFLD.

Overall, our research highlights turmeric as a viable option for those seeking treatment for liver disease, offering benefits that may surpass those of conventional therapies.

I purchased this for my dog, who had liver inflammation. Despite curcumin's low bio-availability in turmeric form, giving him 1 gm/day for ten days lowered his ALT levels significantly. It shows great promise as an anti-inflammatory, and I appreciate the efforts of Indena, the manufacturer.

We investigated how a turmeric and Boswellia formulation, known as Rhuleave-K, helps manage low back pain related to poor posture. This study involved 52 participants, equally divided by gender, who had been experiencing discomfort for at least two to three weeks.

Using a randomized, placebo-controlled, and double-blinded approach, we carefully measured the pain intensity at the beginning and again at the end of the 15-day trial. The findings were promising; those taking Rhuleave-K experienced a dramatic reduction in pain—showing a reduction of up to 98.5% by the end of the trial. In comparison, the placebo group reported minimal improvement.

We also noted significant decreases in the Oswestry disability index, indicating that participants not only had less pain but also felt increasingly able to carry out daily activities. Overall, this study supports the idea that Rhuleave-K can be a safe and effective option for those looking to alleviate low back discomfort, specifically due to poor posture.

We investigated how curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, impacts osteoarthritis (OA) by focusing on its role in reducing the formation of bone-destroying cells called osteoclasts. In our research, we used a mouse model designed to mimic OA by destabilizing the medial meniscus, allowing us to measure the effects of curcumin on joint health.

Our study included three groups of male mice: those who received a vehicle treatment after their surgery, those with OA but also receiving the vehicle, and those with OA that were treated with curcumin. Over the course of eight weeks, we monitored the mice's cartilage and bone structure, looking for any changes.

We found that curcumin significantly suppressed osteoclast formation and bone resorption without harming the cells, suggesting it may be a promising treatment to alleviate arthritis symptoms. Specifically, curcumin inhibited the activation of important signaling pathways that promote osteoclast formation and cartilage degradation. This suggests a new and exciting approach for treating osteoarthritis, offering hope for better management of this chronic condition.
