In our quasi-experimental study, we explored how a mobile health application, DietLens, could help reduce anxiety in patients preparing for radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy, particularly focusing on those following a low-iodine diet.

Conducted at a Singapore hospital, we divided 56 participants into two groups: one received standard care, while the other used DietLens alongside standard treatment. After accounting for dropouts, we ended up with 50 patients who completed the study.

Initially, anxiety levels were similar between both groups, but we observed a notable decrease in anxiety among those using the DietLens app after the intervention. Specifically, the app users had significantly lower anxiety levels compared to the control group.

Moreover, we discovered that all intervention group members expressed satisfaction with the educational materials and overall treatment process, suggesting that digital tools can play a key role in supporting patients during their health journeys.

We explored the effectiveness of 2% aqueous iodine in preventing infections caused by rhinoviruses, the culprits behind the common cold. In a controlled setting, volunteers had their fingers treated with iodine before being exposed to the virus. Remarkably, none of the eight participants who received the iodine treatment became infected immediately afterwards. In contrast, all of the seven volunteers treated with a placebo did get infected.

We also noticed that when exposure occurred two hours after iodine application, only one out of ten volunteers fell victim to the virus, whereas six out of ten in the placebo group became ill. The difference was notable, though not quite statistically significant. Additionally, tests showed virus presence in only 11% of hand washes from those who used iodine, compared to 41% from the placebo group, suggesting that iodine may substantially reduce virus contamination on hands.

Overall, these findings indicate that using iodine could be an effective strategy in preventing common cold infections, especially right after treatment. It seems that applying iodine to our hands may serve as a protective measure against rhinovirus, significantly reducing the chances of getting sick.

This may be the solution. Perhaps this is what has given me, a female, increased energy and reduced hair loss. Though I did not notice hair loss except in the drain, the amount has diminished by 75%. I eat no processed foods and consume a lot of sea salt. Although I had low T4 levels, taking this three times a week feels beneficial.

I believe they are helping. I've long suspected I had low thyroid function. As a child, I felt burdened, and as an adult, fatigue, confusion, and very low body temperature became constant companions. Two years ago, a goiter appeared, a further indicator of low function, alongside irregular heavy periods and mood issues. I resorted to excessive exercise and extreme dieting to manage my weight and energy. Even a cardiologist noted my heart arrhythmia. My endocrinologist dismissed everything as psychological. I decided to tackle this issue independently at 57. While I can't say these pills will solve every problem, my heart issues have almost vanished, my sleep has improved, my mood stabilised, and my energy levels are much more consistent. If this is all I gain, it's well worth it!

We examined how U.S.-grown sugar kelp, a type of edible brown seaweed, might help combat liver problems associated with obesity in mice. Mice were given a diet high in fats and sugars, with one group also receiving sugar kelp.

Remarkably, those eating sugar kelp showed less weight gain and reduced levels of harmful cholesterol and fats in their liver. They also experienced less liver inflammation and fibrosis compared to those on the higher-fat diet without kelp.

These findings suggest that sugar kelp could be a beneficial addition to diets aimed at reducing health issues related to obesity.

We explored the effectiveness of liposomal polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP)-iodine hydrogel for treating chronic inflammatory skin conditions, including acne. In our study, 30 participants with acne vulgaris received a 3% PVP-iodine hydrogel for up to four weeks.

By examining the Global Clinical Severity Score, we observed a notable improvement specific to acne, with a score change of 0.5, which was statistically significant. Alongside this, enhancements in pain levels and overall quality of life were also reported.

Importantly, the treatment was generally well tolerated, with only minor side effects such as burning or itching experienced by a small percentage of participants. Overall, these findings suggest that liposomal PVP-iodine hydrogel could be a promising option for managing acne and potentially other skin infections related to bacterial presence.

Kelp may cause acne if taken in high doses. If you notice your skin breaking out, reduce your intake to every other day instead of daily. Kelp can address symptoms of an underactive thyroid, and I definitely recommend it, but be informed about dosing to avoid skin issues.

We looked into the growing concern of iodine deficiency hypothyroidism among children in the United States. This condition, which can lead to cognitive and physical impairments, was thought to be largely eliminated thanks to universal salt iodization started in the 1920s. However, recent trends suggest that iodine deficiency could be reappearing due to increased use of noniodized salts, lower iodine levels in dairy, and dietary restrictions like veganism or food allergies.

Over an 18-month period, we documented a series of cases where three children were diagnosed with iodine deficiency hypothyroidism despite having no underlying thyroid dysfunction. Their clinical presentations varied significantly—some had large goiters while others showed mild or no goiter at all. The results of their biochemical tests also highlighted a range of thyroid-stimulating hormone elevations.

Importantly, all patients returned to normal thyroid function following iodine supplementation. We propose that measuring spot urine iodine levels alongside elevated serum thyroglobulin could serve as a simpler and effective diagnostic approach, moving away from the more complex 24-hour urinary iodine tests. Our findings shine a light on the necessity of addressing iodine deficiency in today’s dietary landscape.

Cured my hypothyroidism

A great quality natural iodine source. NOW Foods maintains excellent quality control to ensure this kelp doesn't contain excessive mercury or arsenic, which supports my thyroid's hormone production. Taking this daily has cured my hypothyroidism. One concern is that the lid doesn't seal adequately, so I store my supplements in the fridge to avoid moisture.
