Just got these and love this company but so disappointed to see that they added maltodextrin to it. I was looking for a simple elderberry supplement

I phoned the customer service number (it was a Sunday) and there IS a number that you can call if you are having an adverse reaction. The woman on the telephone gave me an incident number and spoke with their toxicologist. I told her that this was the only thing I had done differently that day. I also told her that each year during flu season I take Sambucol Syrup with no difficulty. (As an aside, I do not drink alcohol or take psychotropic drugs - illegal or prescribed - so that would not be a part of the picture) The toxicologist recommended that I do not take this again, since it appeared to be an adverse reaction. After five hours, a lot of water and Gatorade, apparently it cleared my system and I was fine. The woman with whom I spoke gave me a phone number for reimbursement because I told her that I was going to throw the bottle away. She indicated that they have a reimbursement department. I just got off the phone with them and they were of no help. After being routed to three different departments I was told that because it was purchased through Amazon, there is nothing that they would do. They said this despite having an "unconditional money back guarantee" stated on the box. Since then, I have had significant GI difficulties requiring doctor's visits and testing. The blackcurrant contained in these capsules is a high FODMAP food, known for increasing GI inflammation. Given my adverse reaction to the product and the company's lack of concern and customer service when someone has clearly had an adverse reaction to their product, I would not recommend this

I do not take black elderberry every day -- only when I sense cold or flu symptoms coming on (which is very rare). When I do sense those symptoms, both my doctor and my experience tell me it's vital to start ingesting black elderberry and enteric coated garlic supplements within six hours, or the cold/flu bug get the upper hand. As far as efficacy is concerned, I have no problem with this New Chapter Elderberry Force product. Taking an appropriate amount of milligrams of this product works well to help fight off a cold or flu. That said, different manufacturers make their supplements with differing levels of the active ingredient, so all other things being equal, one might want to consider the actual cost of the active ingredients one is getting for the price paid. In other words, one manufacturer's dosage will be different from another's, so instead of "cost per pill" or "cost per dose" (because recommended dosages are different on different manufacturer's products), the fairest way to compare apples with apples is to look at cost per 100 mg of the active ingredient. To do this, I compared this New Chapter product with three other products: the Gaia brand black elderberry capsules, the Gaia Black Elderberry syrup, and the Spring Valley Black Elderberry Syrup that I picked up at Walmart. Here is the breakdown, in order of cost-per-100 mg of active ingredient, based on the current cost of products at the time of this writing: - Gaia Black Elderberry Syrup: 3.5 cents per 100 mg - Gaia Black Elderberry Capsules: 5.3 cents per 100 mg - New Chapter Elderberry Force Capsules: 23.9 cents per 100 mg - Spring Valley Black Elderberry Syrup: 83.1 cents per 100 mg In making comparisons, I readily acknowledge that other factors are in play. For instance, the Gaia Black Elderberry Syrup must be refrigerated after opening. This makes it difficult to take with me if I'm traveling (and I travel often). The capsules are MUCH easier to deal with in my luggage, and therefore, for convenience, the extra cost for the capsules is worth it. But there's still a wide price gap between the Gaia and New Chapter capsules. Both products say their active ingredient is "Sambucus nigra," so perhaps the difference in price is due to a difference in quality. Problem: I have no way of knowing which one might have a higher quality, and I'll guarantee you that higher price does not equal higher quality. Milligram-vs-milligram, the Walmart product is 348 percent more expensive (wow!) than the New Chapter product and 2,358 percent more expensive (double wow!) than the Gaia liquid --- but Walmart's bottle of black elderberry syrup is better suited for putting on pancakes, because according to its ingredients label, it's mostly just a bottle of liquid fructose. Sure, it's got a whiff of black elderberry syrup mixed in so they could put that word on the label, but I'll lay book that the quality of the black elderberry is NOT high enough to justify the price. (By they way, I wouldn't recommend Walmart's Spring Valley product for pancakes, either: $10 for a 4-oz bottle of black elderberry-flavored pancake syrup is a tad overpriced). So why else might the New Chapter product be pricier? I note the extra ingredient of Black Currant (Ribes nigrum) in the New Chapter product that the Gaia does not have. I'm aware that Black Currant is an antioxidant and anthocyanin --meaning it has anti-viral benefits-- but I doubt that its inclusion is enough to warrant the vast difference in price. I'll close this review by saying I believe New Chapter's product functions well as a Black Elderberry source for combating cold & flu (it was instrumental in killing off a cold that tried to infect my daughter). My concern is simply with the price in light of the cost-per-mg comparison. If anyone has any input to support the reason for the higher price, I would be interested in hearing about in the comments section. I'm happy to amend my review if additional data shows it's warranted

Maybe it was just a coincidence...or just maybe it was the Elderberry. My vote is on the Elderberry and I will be taking them again starting in the fall for the next cold and flu season. Recommende
Read More...I am familiar with adaptogens and believe they serve a purpose independent of western medicine and in conjunction with more traditional methods. I will continue to utilize best practices in both arenas...to be transparent. I typically buy Gaia products at Whole Foods and try to stay away from buying ANY supplements online. Due to the current pandemic, I purchased this online here at Amazon. Prior to my purchase I read the Consumer Reports article endorsing this product. I chose the capsules simply because they are easier to take than a liquid. My teenage (healthy, athletic) son had a reaction that was so severe last night at 3am...he was begging to go to the ER. I was able to get him stabilized after an hour. The ONLY difference in his vitamin regimen yesterday was the addition of ONE of these capsules. This morning I took this capsule with morning coffee and I am having a similar reaction as I type this. Chest is tight, heart is beating rapidly, and my stomach feels compressed. Feel nauseated and dizzy. Never felt this way before. I read another review here that echoes mine. Buyer beware. Adaptogens are no joke. They are effective...tumeric, olive leaf, oregano...my daily go-tos...but this is beyond. For the record, my son and I have taken elderberry syrup by Gaia and Sambuca with no incident. More is not always better. I am thinking this is off the hook too strong or I wasn't given a legitimate product. Lesson learned. I DO NOT typically purchase supplements online and will not make this mistake again
