Our research focused on understanding how Vitamin D (VitD) might influence blood clotting, especially in the context of COVID-19. We found that when human endothelial cells were exposed to IL-6—an inflammatory cytokine associated with severe COVID-19—it led to dysfunction in these cells. This dysfunction was marked by increased levels of Tissue Factor (TF) and cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), which promote blood clotting.

Remarkably, when we treated these endothelial cells with VitD, we observed a reversal of these harmful effects. VitD appeared to inhibit the expression of TF and CAMs and even modulated the levels of the ACE2 receptor, which is crucial for the entry of the virus into cells. We explored how a specific genetic variant associated with vitamin D might influence the occurrence of cold sores, also known as Herpes Simplex Labialis (HSL). Our research involved nearly 1,800 participants from the TwinsUK registry, with a focus on a group of 595 that completed both blood tests and questionnaires regarding their cold sore experiences.

From the participants surveyed, 235 reported having experienced cold sores at least once, and out of these, 160 indicated that they had recurrent episodes. While we investigated several genetic variants, including three commonly discussed in relation to cold sores, we found no significant links between these particular SNPs and the occurrence or recurrence of cold sores.

However, our analysis did reveal a noteworthy association with a genetic variation in the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) gene. This variant was significantly correlated with both the history of cold sore outbreaks and their frequency. While this suggests a potential relationship between vitamin D-related genetics and cold sore experiences, it does not mean that vitamin D treatment has a proven direct effect on reducing these occurrences.

Overall, our findings provide an intriguing glimpse into the genetic factors that may play a role in cold sore reactivation, especially as it pertains to the VDR gene. Yet, since we didn't explore the direct effects of vitamin D supplementation, more research would be needed to conclusively determine how vitamin D treatment might influence cold sore frequency.

We examined the benefits of calcium dobesilate for patients suffering from chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), particularly focusing on how it impacts symptoms like leg cramps. In a systematic evaluation of ten different clinical trials involving 778 patients, we compared the effects of calcium dobesilate to a placebo.

We explored the connection between vitamin D levels and upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) among military recruits during their training. This observation spanned across different seasons and included over 1,600 recruits. Our aim was to understand how achieving sufficient vitamin D levels could potentially impact the frequency and severity of colds among physically active individuals.

In an additional phase of the research, we conducted a randomized controlled trial with 250 male recruits. They received either a placebo, simulated sunlight exposure, or oral vitamin D3 supplements during winter. This comparison allowed us to see if these methods effectively increased vitamin D levels to a sufficient status of 25(OH)D at 50 nmol/L or higher.

Notably, our findings showed that only 21% of recruits had adequate vitamin D during winter, yet those who did were 40% less likely to suffer from URTIs. Furthermore, both vitamin D supplementation strategies similarly helped nearly all participants achieve sufficient levels. Vitamin D supplementation notably reduced the severity of URTI symptoms by 15% and the number of days with URTIs by 36% compared to placebo.

When my plaster was removed after 1.5 months, my bones had fused well, so I continued using it until the pack was complete.
