Good product

After strongly craving chocolate and cheesy pizza i figured it due to a calcium deficiency. To test the theory, i purchased this product. The dosage is 4 pills, though i took 1 at first to se what would happen. After a few weeks i raised it to 2 and noticed a big difference in my cravings. Recently, i switched it to 3 pills and my cravings for cheese and chocolate seem to be gone (they still taste good, i just don't _crave_ them.) As i take a multivitamin which includes calcium, i seem to be getting the recommended 1000mg. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Calcium-HealthProfessional/ states, "calcium carbonate is absorbed most efficiently when taken with food, whereas calcium citrate is absorbed equally well when taken with or without food" This product, being citrate, need not be taken with food. Also, "Absorption is highest in doses â‰¤500 mg. So, for example, one who takes 1,000 mg/day of calcium from supplements might split the dose and take 500 mg at two separate times during the day." The directions do not mention this, though it does not seem to be a problem for me. Finally, "Vitamin D intake: this nutrient, obtained from food and produced by skin when exposed to sunlight of sufficient intensity, improves calcium absorption." which is handled by the included D3. The pills are large and smooth, and readily dissolve in water. I found out the latter when leaving the pill on a wet counter. Oops! Swallowing the pill needs slight concentration to direct the pill while straight and make sure it does not turn before reaching the throat. Otherwise, it occasionally will turn and be uncomfortable or even hurtful when swallowing. As it begins to dissolve right away, it dries the tongue. So, whereas i find i can easily swallow numerous pills at once without additional water, these are much easier and more comfortable with water. Pros: Solgar Quality Citrate as opposed to carbonate Smooth pill aids swallowing D3 included Cons: Large pills Ho-hums: No mention in directions that it may be best taken <=500mg at a time Overall, this is a good product that works well. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants calcium as a supplement

My naturopathy doctor highly recommended Solgar. She said they have exceptionally high quality products and she recommended I take Solgar Magnesium Citrate along with Solgar Calcium Citrate because the magnesium citrate would speed the absorption of the calcium citrate

Four pills a day!

I was disappointed with this product upon arrival when I saw that I have to take 4 tabs to get 1000 mg of calcium per day. That is a lot of pills. Directions say to take 4 pills with a meal. Your body can't absorb more than 500 mg of calcium supplement at a time so this is misleading. Also, It does not have the GMP seal. I will not be buying this again as I would rather only take 2 pills a day and want a supplement that has the GMP seal

I'm quite Celiac, went un-diagnosed for 20 years before finally finding the right GI guy(gal) in 2005. Been pounding Calcium/D supplements ever since. I can say with some clarity that calcium citrate is absorbed better (at least by me) than plain oyster shell calcium, I can see it in my T-scores and in my hair. YMMV, but this stuff has helped me

Solgar's Brand Is Free of Major Allergens

Calcium is a mineral that I need to supplement because I'm lactose intolerant and don't have a lot of milk in my diet. Calcium carbonate and calcium citrate are essentially the same except calcium citrate is a bit more expensive, but better tolerated in people with stomach acid problems. Only 500mg of calcium can be absorbed by the body at a time, so if you need 1000mg, you would need to separate the doses throughout the day. What I especially like about the Solgar brand is that they are free of the major allergens and sweeteners: gluten, wheat, dairy, soy, yeast, sugar, artificial flavors, and preservatives. This is an important distinction for me as opposed to other brands that add unnatural ingredients to their formula to try to make it taste better. Calcium citrate is known to be slightly sour, but I can't taste it in the Solgar brand. Apparently they use a water-based coating as opposed to the more common solvent-based coating agent shellac that other brands use. If you are not able to swallow the tablet whole, (it is a larger "horse" pill) it will dissolve in a few minutes into a chalky powder. The only thing I don't like about these pills is the serving size. In order to get 1000mg per day, you'd have to take 4 tablets... 250mg each. That can get expensive rather quickly as you only get a 20 day supply per bottle. Overall, I am pleased with the quality of the product but perhaps they could improve the efficiency of the dose

Great product

These are much smaller than the calcium pills I was taking--a big plus! I will definitely purchase again! Also want to add that they are soy free, as i have had breast cancer -- this is very important to me

Update : July 2020 Since a while I switched to calcium vitamin d3 from Bluebonnet it is even better and it has no Titanium dioxide. ------------------ This calcium Works! I tried six brand, but this has something. Please never change the formulation

This Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D3 is a reliable gluten-free supplement

I've been using this Solgar gluten-free Calcium Citrate with D3 for years. I take 2000 mg daily for osteoporosis. Since we can't absorb more than 500 mg ( 2 tablets) of calcium at one sitting, the 4 doses need to be spread throughout the day. I also take additional Solgar Vitamin D3 to help keep my vitamin D at a good level
