A sleep-aid supplement with wide-ranging health benefits

In all mammals, including humans, melatonin is secreted during darkness by the pineal gland, which lies within the brain. Low melatonin levels have been found to be associated with learning problems, especially memory disorders, including Alzheimer's. Researchers in Italy discovered that evening melatonin supplementation in perimenopausal women improved their thyroid function and reduced depression sometimes associated with the lowering of progesterone and estrogen levels in the body with the onset of menopause. Clinical studies have indicated that melatonin may prevent migraines and cluster headaches, and it has been used as a treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Studies have also shown melatonin to have a protective effect against the ravages of radioactive fallout. People who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have found relief with melatonin. And last but not least, veterinarians often recommend melatonin for dogs suffering from aggression or anxiety, including fear of thunderstorms. There is no one-size-fits-all dosage for melatonin. Most healthcare experts recommend "titrating" the dosage. That is, start out small and work up until the desired effect is achieved, in particular as a sleep aid. A sublingual allows the melatonin to be introduced directly into the blood by absorption through the blood vessels under the tongue, rather than having to pass through the stomach and digestive system. I personally chose this one because Source Naturals has a very good reputation for the purity of their supplements and for outside laboratory confirmation that each supplement contains what is listed on the label. The flavor of these tablets are a pleasant orange. I've taken melatonin for many years as a sleep aid, and I've been delighted to hear as research continues to be done on this supplement that not only is it safe, but it is healing and protective on multiple levels within the body. I also have spent many years of my life as a night worker, and it is good to know that night workers can make up for the damage that this can cause to the body, including (as mentioned above) a higher-than-normal tendency to get cancer

My favorite Melatonin

I love this brand of Melatonin. I find that if I take too big of a dosage, I feel kind of drugged and it doesn't really help me sleep, but at a .5mg dosage (I take a half of a tablet), I feel sleepy enough to go right to sleep after about 20 to 30 minutes. These tablets taste great and I have had better results with either the sublingual types or the liquid types. The typical drug stores usually carry 3-10mg tablets which are too strong for me. I suggest that if you are new to trying Melaton, start with a very small dosage. More is not better, in this case

“Lozenges” are the new “Sublingual Tablets”

This is going to be more a public service than a true review (read before complaining).... I just bought three bottles of these "orange sublingual tablets." I always check the mfr's. label to make sure that they are, indeed, sublingual tablets before opening them, in case I need to return a "wrong item." All three bottles stated "orange flavored lozenge" on the front of the label. The seller had stuck two (2) paper labels on the back, one (both?) of which stating "sublingual," but I'm thinking that there's something deceiving, possibly fraudulent, going on here. I tried to lift a label on one bottle, as someone before me tried to do (who apparently returned it). No luck; didn't want to destroy something that at that point I was going to return. I searched several places on the Internet for Source Naturals Melatonin Lozenges -- couldn't find that anywhere, even on Source Natural's web site. I took advantage of their "Contact (us)" link and briefly told them what I found. This was their reply, in its entirety: "Source Naturals appreciates your time and interest. Our “Melatonin Sublingual” products are intended as dietary supplements and are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Recently, FDA stated to us its position that only drug products could use the term “sublingual” on product labels. As such, to make clear that our products are dietary supplements and not drugs, we are updating our product labeling to “Melatonin Lozenges” with instructions for each unit to be dissolved slowly in the mouth prior to swallowing. However, there has been no change in the formulation or effectiveness of our Melatonin products. If you have any questions concerning your use of a particular dietary supplement, please consult your qualified health care professional. Please keep in mind that Source Naturals provides a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you try any Source Naturals product and are unsatisfied for any reason, you may take the product back to the retailer originally purchased for a refund, exchange, or credit." So, there you go. Same product, different description, thanks to the FDA, who after 10 years of "evaluating" a popular European sunscreen which is far more protective than what's available in the USA, finds time, instead, to screw around with this minor confusing, non-descriptive stuff that is essentially of no help to the public. It seems obvious to me that all sellers should update the photos of the bottle (purchasers are going to compare and then return their items if discrepancy is discovered; a lot of unnecessary time and expense wasted) and revise their product description that briefly summarizes what the statement from Source Naturals says. Anyway, I'm glad to learn that the "lozenges" are the same sublingual tablet we all love. (Please do not complain that this is not a true review; I don't care, and have no regret.

Effective, and easy to take.

My daughter's pediatrician had recommended a very low dose melatonin to help her fall asleep on occasion. I had a hard time finding one that was low enough dosage or in a form she would take if needed. These have worked out very well. They are only 1mg, but are large enough to cut in half or even quarters in a pill cutter. They have a pleasant mint flavor, so she does not complain about taking them. They dissolve quickly and within 15 minutes she is asleep. I have also taken these melatonin with great results; though I usually take 2. I will absolutely be buying these again

My go to for melatonin

I'm a bit of a melatonin expert as I have had sleeping problems my entire life. I think I have tried them all by now. After all my research this is my go to melatonin. It seems to work quickly and keeps my asleep better than others. I tried the liquid form thinking it would work faster but found it seemed to stop working midway through the night and I would wake up. Nice an easy

This is a great product in that it simply works as advertised. Taking the "pill" is as simply as dropping it under your tongue and occasionally shifting it around a bit. By time the "pill" has dissolved I am ready to doze off. Being able to setup a subscription for a new bottle to arrive every 6 months is very handy, especially at a 15% savings

Very Disappointed

During the pandemic Source Naturals outsourced their melatonin to a third party manufacturer, the result was disastrous. Even though it is one of the most expensive their product was the best melatonin on the market, and I felt it was worth it. Unfortunately this new version is bad. Doesn't dissolve, tastes horrible, and worst of all... doesn't help me fall asleep (which is the sole reason I use this product). So I returned my purchases and was forced to use a substandard brand. Then Source Naturals announced that their melatonin was back and just like it was before. And it was and for a few months I enjoyed their product. Fast forward to now and it appears that Source Naturals is again trying to unload the bad version of their product. I have tried three bottles, all the same, and I am returning them. Until Source Naturals get it together, or stops trying to sell their inferior product, they will no longer have my busines

Something is wrong with this batch

I agree with the other recent reviews of this product. The last bottle I bought from this seller was fine. Something is really wrong with the current batch. The taste is off and it makes me worried it was tampered with. I may just have to buy the smaller bottles from my local store. Don't know if this is returnable but I'm going to try to send it back. Will not buy from this seller again

I don't understand, it doesn't work, if it did, it's still not great.

I've been taking Melatonin from Walgreens (house brand) and cutting the 3mg dissolvable tablets in half. Like clockwork I start getting sleepy around 1 hour after the tablet and sleep soundly for at least 6 hours. Switched to this brand after running out and have had very restless nights. I don't feel drowsy after taking the tablet and I wake up multiple times throughout the night when I do finally fall asleep. Without discussing it with my wife, she tells me about a week and a half later to buy our old brand because she wasn't sleeping well. Upon returning to our old brand our sleep patterns return to what it was originally and our sleep improved instantly. Outside of what maybe be unexplained effectiveness, the tablets are fairly low quality in comparison. For 1mg tablets, they are twice the size of the Walgreens tablets. They're shaped like old school aspirin, which means they're bulky and a little uncomfortable under the tongue. They also take a very long time to dissolve and generally there is a piece that just won't dissolve that you have to swallow or chew. The Walgreen tablet is generally dissolved completely in just a few seconds and shaped more like a small caplet with smooth round edges. Sounds silly but they also taste much better

Nightly helper

Getting to sleep is quite a struggle for me but this melatonin has helped. I take two every evening about an hour before I want to go to bed. A nutritionist advised me to always start with the lowest dosage (1 mg) and work up as this is a type of hormone and should be treated carefully. No one should just start taking the 5 mg despite that being the popular dosage in Costco, etc. I prefer the peppermint which is a subtle flavor; the orange this also comes in takes too artificial to me. I have tried other brands but keep coming back to this one which I usually get through the fantastic price on subscribe and save
