Understanding the nanoscale adhesion forces between the fungal pathogen and antimicrobial zinc-based layered double hydroxides using single-cell and single-particle force spectroscopy.
We explored the effects of zinc-based treatments on yeast infections, particularly focusing on the interaction between zinc-aluminum layered double hydroxides (ZnAl LDHs) and the yeast pathogen. In contrast, control substances showed little to no adhesion, underscoring the unique properties of zinc-based treatments.
Overall, our findings suggest a promising avenue in the fight against yeast infections, showing how zinc could help bind to and damage fungal pathogens. It’s an exciting development that offers hope in tackling persistent antifungal resistance issues.

Evaluation of different treatment methods against denture stomatitis: a randomized clinical study.
We explored the effectiveness of Uncaria tomentosa, commonly known as cat's claw, in treating denture stomatitis, a condition often linked to yeast infections, particularly from Candida species. In our study, we involved fifty patients suffering from denture stomatitis, dividing them into three groups: one received a well-established antifungal, 2% miconazole; another got a placebo; and the last group used 2% cat's claw gel.
Throughout the study, we measured the severity of denture stomatitis at various periods—immediately, after a week of treatment, and a week later. We also collected samples from the patients' oral mucosa and dentures to analyze the levels of yeast present.
Our findings were quite encouraging. All groups showed a noticeable reduction in the severity of their condition, particularly after one week. More importantly, cat's claw gel demonstrated effectiveness similar to that of 2% miconazole in reducing the number of yeast cells present, specifically Candida albicans, which was the most commonly identified species in patients before treatment.
Overall, cat's claw appeared to be a viable topical option as an adjunct treatment for denture stomatitis related to yeast infections. This suggests that natural remedies might have a role alongside conventional treatments in managing such conditions.

We explored the potential of iron chelation in combating yeast infections caused by the common fungus Candida, which can lead to serious systemic diseases. Our research involved screening over 3,000 unique compounds from a specialized chemical library to identify those that effectively inhibited the growth of a clinical isolate of Candida.
Through this extensive screening, we discovered 17 promising compounds, with three—CMLD013360, CMLD012661, and CMLD012693—showing particularly strong antifungal effects. These compounds belong to two different chemical families and are believed to combat fungal growth by binding to essential metal nutrients like iron.
Interestingly, when we supplemented the growth media with iron, we observed a recovery in the fungus’s growth. This confirmed that the antifungal activity of our compounds was indeed due to their capacity to chelate iron. Importantly, our findings also revealed that these compounds were effective against a variety of other pathogenic fungi, thus underscoring their potential as new treatments in an era where antifungal resistance is becoming increasingly common.
Overall, this study highlights the critical role that iron chelation can play in tackling yeast infections and opens up exciting avenues for the development of novel antifungal therapies.

We explored the potential of curcumin, the active component of turmeric, in treating vulvovaginal candidiasis, a common yeast infection primarily caused by Candida albicans. Our investigation focused on the substance’s antifungal properties against various strains of Candida, comparing its effectiveness to traditional treatments.
The study involved several methods, including an in vitro assessment where curcumin’s ability to combat yeast was tested against eight different Candida strains. We also examined how curcumin interacts with ergosterol, a vital component of the yeast cell membrane, which could explain its antifungal action. Furthermore, we conducted an in vivo experiment using rats treated with estrogen to simulate conditions that might lead to yeast infections.

Our focus was on specific strains like Candida glabrata, Candida lusitaniae, and Candida krusei, along with Cryptococcus neoformans, the latter being notorious for causing fungal meningitis.
In our testing, we found that proanthocyanidin fractions from whole cranberry fruit showed significant antifungal properties. Through a broth microdilution assay, these extracts inhibited the growth of the targeted fungi, with minimum inhibitory concentrations starting as low as 1 μg/mL.
Further analysis revealed that larger oligomers of epicatechin, detected through MALDI-TOF MS, had the strongest inhibitory effects. This research supports the idea that cranberry could be a potential natural antifungal agent, adding a new dimension to its previously known benefits against bacterial infections.

We found that the anticandidal activity varied among the different Lactobacillus strains, with non-adjusted cell-free supernatants (CFSs) being the most effective. Notably, strains like Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus SD11 showed strong results against yeast, especially when combined with 2% mangosteen as a prebiotic. This combination not only promoted the growth of beneficial probiotic bacteria but also enhanced the production of short-chain fatty acids and antioxidants, which are vital for fighting off yeast.
However, while the study highlights the positive effects of probiotics and the benefits of prebiotics like mangosteen, it does not isolate inulin's specific impact on yeast infection. Therefore, while we observed a boost in anticandidal activity with prebiotic supplementation, particularly mangosteen, we cannot definitively conclude inulin's individual effectiveness without further focused research.
