Melatonin benefits in autism models
Melatonin improves synapse development by PI3K/Akt signaling in a mouse model of autism spectrum disorder.
We investigated the role of melatonin in enhancing synaptic development in mouse models of autism. Through long-term oral administration over 28 days, melatonin improved social interactions and dendritic spine density in genetically modified mice.
Importantly, we found that melatonin's benefits are linked to the activation of a specific signaling pathway in the brain. However, when this pathway was blocked, the positive effects of melatonin on synaptic function were diminished. Overall, our findings highlight melatonin's promise for addressing certain autism-related challenges.

Aussies, save your money. I have children with autism who need help with sleep, and we were prescribed Melatonin a few years ago, costing around $120 a month for one compounded script. It felt like utter robbery, which is the norm in Australia. I’ve been buying this brand of Melatonin on iHerb for over a year now, and I can confirm it works just as effectively as the expensive compounded version. One of my sons has severe autism and is non-verbal; he usually struggles to take medicines, but with this Melatonin, he takes it easily and falls asleep within an hour. It’s a bargain compared to other options, and it genuinely saves a fortune!
