IEM diagnosis reveals headache treatmentA Study of Maternal Patients Diagnosed with Inborn Errors of Metabolism Due to Positive Newborn Mass Screening in Their Newborns.
We took a closer look at the effects of l-carnitine on headaches in new mothers diagnosed with inborn errors of metabolism (IEM), identified through newborn screening. Our study included mothers of newborns who had false-positive results from screenings, revealing noteworthy insights into their health conditions.
Out of several examined cases, three mothers were newly diagnosed with IEM. Among these cases, two mothers experienced significant relief from headaches and fatigue after starting oral l-carnitine treatment. This suggests that l-carnitine might play a beneficial role in managing these symptoms.
While it’s important to remember that these findings are preliminary and based on a small sample size, the marked improvement in headaches in two of the mothers indicates that l-carnitine may have a positive effect worth considering in treatment plans for individuals with IEM.
