Cod liver oil aids rheumatoid arthritis
Effect of cod liver oil on symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
Most Relevant Research
In a recent study involving 43 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, we explored the impact of taking 1 gram of cod liver oil daily for three months. The results were striking. We observed notable reductions in morning stiffness by an impressive 52.4%, alongside decreases in both painful and swollen joints, each showing a 40% improvement. Pain intensity also saw a significant drop of 67.5%.

Additionally, the feedback from the patients was overwhelmingly positive. Approximately 68% reported that the treatment was effective, while a remarkable 95% praised its tolerability. However, it’s worth noting that 11 patients did experience some nonsevere adverse effects, but only three of those were possibly related to the cod liver oil itself.

Overall, it seems that cod liver oil can indeed offer relief for those grappling with rheumatoid arthritis, making it a treatment worth considering for improving symptoms of this autoimmune disorder.

DHA reduces infant cold symptoms
Prenatal docosahexaenoic acid supplementation and infant morbidity: randomized controlled trial.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a double-blind randomized controlled trial to understand how prenatal supplementation of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) might influence infant health, particularly concerning the common cold. Pregnant women were given either a daily dose of 400 mg of DHA or a placebo starting at 18 to 22 weeks of gestation until childbirth.

Caregivers then reported on their infants’ health at 1, 3, and 6 months, sharing details about common illness symptoms. We found that DHA supplementation appeared to reduce the number of colds at one month and also seemed to lessen the duration of various cold symptoms in infants. Specifically, infants in the DHA group experienced fewer cold symptoms and had shorter durations of cough and wheezing.

While the overall occurrence of specific illness symptoms was similar between the DHA and placebo groups, DHA did bring about noteworthy benefits. At 1 month, infants in the DHA group had a 26% shorter duration of cough and 30% shorter wheezing; however, they experienced a longer duration of rash.

Furthermore, by the time the infants reached 3 months, those whose mothers took DHA were ill for 14% less time overall. At 6 months, the DHA group showed significantly reduced durations of several illness indicators, although they did experience longer episodes of vomiting.

This study suggests that prenatal DHA not only seems to impact the occurrence of colds in children but may also play a role in the duration of symptoms over the first half-year of life.

Cod liver oil aids heart stability
[Correction of disorders of cardiac electric stability in post-infarction cardiosclerosis using a diet enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids].
Most Relevant Research
We examined how cod liver oil might affect heart health following a heart attack. In our study, we fed rats a special form of cod liver oil called "eikonole," which is enriched with important fatty acids. After a period of feeding, we induced a heart attack and then looked at how the hearts functioned over the next month.

Our findings were promising. We observed that eikonole raised the heart's fibrillation threshold by 50%. This means that it took a stronger stimulus to trigger heart disturbances, which is a good sign for heart stability. Additionally, there was a significant reduction in both spontaneous extra heartbeats and those triggered by stimulation of the vagus nerve.

However, while eikonole improved certain aspects of heart function, it did not significantly change the overall pressure or speed of heart contractions. This suggests that while there are benefits, they may be limited to specific areas of cardiac function rather than an overall enhancement of heart performance.

DHA-PS promotes liver recovery
DHA-enriched phosphatidylserine ameliorates cyclophosphamide-induced liver injury via regulating the gut-liver axis.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated the potential of DHA-enriched phosphatidylserine (DHA-PS) in addressing liver injuries caused by cyclophosphamide in mice. By administering cyclophosphamide over five days, we created a model to simulate this liver damage. Following this, we treated the mice with different doses of DHA-PS for a week to see if it could help heal their livers.

Our findings were quite promising. The mice receiving DHA-PS experienced significant improvements in key liver health indicators, including reduced inflammation and oxidative stress. Through advanced analysis, we discovered that DHA-PS helped correct metabolic imbalances caused by cyclophosphamide, which is a crucial aspect of liver recovery.

Additionally, we observed that DHA-PS has a positive impact on the gut-liver axis. This treatment restored the intestinal barrier, reduced harmful compounds in the bloodstream, and improved overall gut microbiota health. By balancing the gut bacteria, we enhanced the overall health of the mice.

Overall, the results suggest that DHA-PS could be a valuable therapeutic option or functional food for combating liver injuries related to cyclophosphamide. This study highlights the potential benefits of DHA on liver health and underscores the importance of the gut-liver connection.

To be honest, it is excellent in all its flavours. I ordered it a month ago to address my liver disease and related stomach issues. My immunity is low, and my weight has drastically dropped. Since using it, I’ve felt better, and I’ve started eating more. I will continue to buy it until I am fully healed. It assists in healing, but if the taste is too strong, one can use empty capsules, filling them and storing them properly. I wish for a speedy recovery for all.

Wonderful! Fish oil has long been appreciated for children; our parents in the USSR were given it, despite not recalling it fondly due to its taste. Nowadays, it's available in many forms, but cheaper options might not be of high quality. Sweeteners can also trigger allergies, as my child discovered when trying “sweet fish” from a well-known Norwegian brand. I sought natural liquid fish oil and found one from Carlson Labs, which is highly rated. The child enjoyed it, as the lemon juice masks the fishy flavour. Pros: improved appetite, no more skin rashes! General immunity also increased—no more sickness at nursery. The downside is that being super natural, it should be used within 100 days once opened, and vitamin D should accompany it from October to April; thus, one bottle isn’t enough.

DHA improves milk and reduces anxiety
DHA Supplementation of Obese Rats throughout Pregnancy and Lactation Modifies Milk Composition and Anxiety Behavior of Offspring.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how supplementing obese mothers with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) affects milk composition and the anxiety behavior of their offspring. In a study involving female Wistar rats, some were placed on a high-fat diet while others ate regular chow. We supplemented half of the mothers from one month before mating until they weaned their pups with DHA. The goal was to see if this supplementation could improve the quality of their milk and influence the anxiety levels of their babies.

Our findings indicated that the obese mother rats exhibited higher weight and fat levels and their milk contained less beneficial DHA but more corticosterone and leptin. Notably, their offspring showed a higher ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the milk they consumed, which correlates to increased anxiety levels, especially in female pups. In contrast, those mothers who received DHA supplements had lower body weight and fat and produced milk with higher DHA content. Their offspring not only had a better balance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids but also demonstrated reduced anxiety compared to those from mothers without supplementation.

Overall, this study highlights the significant positive impact of DHA supplementation during pregnancy and lactation in obese rats, as it not only improves the nutritional quality of their milk but also helps decrease anxiety levels in the offspring in a sex-dependent manner.

DHA linked to reduced asthma
The association of polyunsaturated fatty acids and asthma: a cross-sectional study.
Most Relevant Research
We aimed to understand how dietary intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) relates to asthma in children. This investigation was based on a substantial group of 14,727 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which provided a comprehensive view of dietary habits and health outcomes over nearly two decades.

In our findings, we observed that asthma was reported in about 15.38% of the participants. Interestingly, we found a notable negative association between DHA intake and asthma prevalence. Specifically, children who consumed higher levels of DHA showed a lower likelihood of having asthma, with the odds especially favorable for boys, children aged 5 to 12 years, and those whose mothers smoked during pregnancy.

The data indicated that DHA, along with other omega-3 fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), can play a protective role against childhood asthma. These findings suggest that encouraging a diet rich in these healthy fats could be beneficial in reducing asthma risk in young children, particularly among specific groups at greater risk.

Cod liver oil aids heart health
Cod liver oil supplementation improves cardiovascular and metabolic abnormalities in streptozotocin diabetic rats.
Most Relevant Research
We delved into how cod liver oil (CLO) influences heart health, especially in the context of diabetes. Using a study with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats, we treated them with CLO and monitored various cardiovascular metrics over 12 weeks. What we found was quite telling: untreated diabetic rats faced significant increases in blood sugar and harmful lipid levels, while those receiving CLO showed improved weight gain and complete prevention of lipid problems.

Moreover, the study revealed that CLO-treated rats exhibited healthier blood vessel responses and heart function. For instance, we observed that CLO effectively corrected some vasoconstriction issues and improved heart rhythm responses that were otherwise diminished in diabetic rats. The treatment also helped preserve the structural integrity of heart tissue, which often suffers in diabetes.

Overall, this research strongly suggests that cod liver oil can be a valuable supplement for mitigating heart disease risks associated with diabetes. With its rich omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, CLO appears to play a protective role in maintaining cardiovascular health in diabetic settings.

DHA lowers cholesterol; boosts metabolism
F-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging reveals the protective effect of docosahexaenoic acid on glucose metabolism by reducing brain 27-hydroxycholesterol.
Most Relevant Research
We aimed to investigate how docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) impacts cholesterol levels and brain glucose metabolism. In our study, we focused on aged SAMP8 mice, dividing them into two groups: a control group and one receiving DHA supplementation.

Our results revealed encouraging changes; the group that received DHA showed a decrease in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels increased. More importantly, we observed improvements in glucose metabolism in various brain regions, including the cortex and hippocampus.

These findings suggest that DHA may help lower harmful cholesterol levels and enhance brain function by regulating specific cholesterol compounds like 27-hydroxycholesterol, which are linked to glucose metabolism. Overall, our study highlights DHA's potential in supporting heart and brain health through cholesterol management.

Docosahexaenoic acid reduces acne risk
The causal association between polyunsaturated fatty acids and acne: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated the relationship between docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), and the occurrence of acne. Using a method called Mendelian randomization, we looked at how genetic variations associated with DHA might influence acne development in large groups of participants, including over 115,000 individuals from the UK and nearly 364,000 of Finnish ancestry.

Our findings revealed that higher levels of DHA are actually linked to a lower risk of developing acne. Specifically, we found that a significant increase in DHA levels or its proportion compared to total fatty acids corresponded with a reduced likelihood of acne. In contrast, higher levels of linoleic acid (LA), another type of PUFA, were associated with an increased acne risk.

This suggests that balancing our intake of these fatty acids might be important for skin health. Notably, the results pointed towards a genetic connection involving the FADS1 gene, which appears to play a role in how these fatty acids affect our skin.

In conclusion, increasing DHA could be beneficial in protecting against acne, while excessive linoleic acid might have the opposite effect. Overall, our study highlights the importance of these fatty acids in understanding acne risk better.

I hope I don't jinx it. Carlson's CLO has been a great addition to my daily routine; I've been taking it for a month, and the results have been excellent thus far. My main health concerns are my tendency to catch colds and the flu often, and minor adult acne that keeps breaking out unexpectedly. My inflammation issues indicate my body's natural defences are low. The flavour of this oil is fantastic, with a hint of lemon and no nasty aftertaste. I've been taking double shots daily, and despite being around sick friends, I haven't caught anything. I've also noticed improvement in my sleep, and my skin has calmed down significantly, with fewer breakouts. There's only an increased appetite as a side effect, but I highly recommend this product to adults and especially to children.
