Turmeric shows promise for knee pain
We sought to determine the effectiveness of Curcuma longa extract, commonly known as turmeric, in alleviating knee pain associated with osteoarthritis. Our investigation focused on randomized controlled trials that compared turmeric extract with placebo, analyzing data from notable databases like PubMed and Cochrane Library through April 2021.

In total, we reviewed 10 trials encompassing 783 patients. The outcomes of our analysis were quite promising. We found that patients taking Curcuma longa experienced significantly greater relief from pain and improved overall function compared to those given a placebo. The best turmeric! I regularly consume this quality product, which has organic and useful ingredients. My joints are in good shape and my knee pain has disappeared. It has a neutral turmeric taste, and I take it alongside omega 3, lecithin, and multivitamins for overall support at age 34.

Our aim was to understand how low and high doses of curcumin might aid in pain relief and improve function compared to traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). We gathered data from a variety of trusted medical databases, looking at studies published up until June 2021.

Our analysis included eleven studies with a total of 1,258 participants suffering from primary knee osteoarthritis. We discovered that curcuminoids, the active compounds in turmeric, provided meaningful pain relief, as shown by improvements in visual analogue scale (VAS) scores and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) scores when compared to other treatments.

Interestingly, we did not find significant differences in pain relief or adverse events (AEs) between high-dose (1,000 mg or more daily) and low-dose (less than 1,000 mg daily) curcumin treatments. Curcumin and Vitamin D reduce pain
We investigated how curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, along with vitamin D, could affect knee pain and the progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in a specific rat model. In this study, male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: a control group, a group receiving curcumin, a group receiving vitamin D, a group receiving both supplements, and a sham-operated group. This well-structured approach allowed us to effectively evaluate the separate and combined impacts of these supplements.

Over a span of 12 weeks, we observed that both curcumin and vitamin D contributed to reduced pain levels on their own. When used together, their analgesic effects were even stronger, providing better pain relief for the rats. Beyond pain relief, supplemental curcumin and vitamin D also showed promising results when we examined inflammatory markers in their serum. We found a decrease in markers of inflammation while levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) increased.

Furthermore, we noted improvements in antioxidant levels as well as a significant reduction in the oxidative stress marker known as Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein (COMP). Histological analysis revealed that these supplements helped preserve joint structure and maintain cartilage integrity, while also reducing inflammation in the synovium.

Our findings emphasize the potential of curcumin and vitamin D as effective natural agents in managing knee OA and associated pain. These results could suggest a way to delay the progression of knee OA and improve patient care.
