We explored the impact of Lactobacillus acidophilus and other probiotics on children suffering from acute gastroenteritis. Our systematic review included randomized controlled trials comparing probiotics to placebos, focusing on strains available in Japan.

We reviewed multiple databases for studies on using Lactobacillus acidophilus to treat acute gastroenteritis in children. Our analysis incorporated 15 randomized controlled trials with 1,765 young patients.

While Lactobacillus acidophilus appeared to shorten diarrhea duration when used at a daily dose of 10 CFU or more, this finding wasn't statistically significant for single strains. It did show some effectiveness in reducing diarrhea frequency after a few days, primarily on day three.

However, the evidence overall remains moderate to low in quality, suggesting the need for further research.
