The Benefits of Garlic, Reflux Treatment
Garlic has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, including digestive issues. However, the evidence regarding its effectiveness in preventing or alleviating Reflux is limited and mixed. Some studies suggest that Garlic may have beneficial effects on the gastrointestinal system, including reducing inflammation and promoting the growth of healthy gut bacteria. These properties could potentially help with Reflux symptoms.
On the other hand, Garlic is known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscular ring that acts as a barrier between the stomach and the esophagus. When the LES is weakened, acid and stomach contents can flow back up into the esophagus, leading to Reflux symptoms. Therefore, for individuals with Reflux or gastroesophageal Reflux disease (GERD), Garlic consumption may aggravate symptoms by further weakening the LES.
