The Bad news outweighs any good that it does

Jarrow Formulas Astaxanthin, Supports Eye Health, 12 mg, 30 Softgels First let me say I have purchased Jarrow Formulas products previously. I have great respect for the brand, trust them for product purity, and l know that their claims about any product are reasonable. This is no different. I can only comment about its effects on me, and on my friend who started this product at the same time. My friend and I did not discuss the effects of this supplement as we started. What we learned was more of an incidental conversation while I was griping that I felt so damn warm, irritable and angry. THAT was the trigger for us comparing notes. This review was the result. This product does live up to its claims to help vision. Our near and far vision improved considerably, and quickly. The problem is it does a great deal more, and therein lies the rub .Both of us felt uncomfortably warm, began sweating without exertion and without being in any warm room. I believe it increases metabolism. It increases energy. Made both of us more awake and alert, but very jittery, hyper-vigilant, with very mild tremors, which caused a concern for self-control. Both of us felt more clumsy. AND MUCH MORE IRRITABLE, quick to anger. Along with this was an increase in appetite. One of us is on medication which could exacerbate its effects but the other is not. The problem was much worse with the 12 mg dose, but sadly still occurred with the 4 mg dose. Even after waiting a week in between. This does not have a short half life either, and took at least 3-4 days for the effects to lessen. There may be a sensitizing effect or a question of just a sensitivity to this product, since we started the 12 mg supplement first. This could be a statement about the condition of the nervous system of my friend and I, but I believe it should serve as a cautionary tale for others. Is it worth the risk? Maybe. It depends on your reaction. We would never take it again. If you were still willing to try, I would suggest, grudgingly,start with the 4 mg version and see how you feel. It does improve vision. But it is a lot like the Klopman diamond - it comes with something which diminishes its worth, and makes it more trouble than it is worth

*UPDATE AT BOTTOM* I have had this supplement for a couple months but just hadn't taken it. I had researched Astaxanthin and was eager to try it but I take so many other supplements it got pushed to the side. Lucky for me, I had it right when I needed it. A few years ago, I wasn't paying attention to my puppy when she decided to tap me for attention and I took a paw to the eye. My eye never healed correctly and quite frequently (in the dead of sleep) the weakened cornea will re-rip. It is very painful and flat out miserable. Nothing I had found worked well for recurrent corneal erosion. Needless to say, it's no fun. About three weeks ago, I woke up reliving the same nightmare. A torn cornea. That morning I was taking Motrin when I noticed the Astaxanthin and wondered if just maybe... so I started taking it that day. I have diligently taken it daily since then. It has been a few weeks and my eye has not torn in that time - which is a really long stretch for me. I am not only please but also curious if others have experienced the same. I didn't find much in the way of researching recurrent corneal erosion and Astaxanthin. But for me, these last three weeks have been lovely. I have already ordered a different brand to try for next time to see if there is a notable difference between naturally occurring Astaxanthin and lab made. I do know three weeks is not a 'long time' in the grand scheme of things but for me it really is unusual. The only thing that has changed in that time is taking this supplement. Update 12/11/2017 After finishing the original bottle, I switched brands to test and see if another form worked better. Despite following the dosage perfectly, after four days of a different brand, I woke up at 3 am with another corneal tear. The miserably painful eye ripping continued weekly (sometimes multiple times a week) until I could place another order. All brands are not made equally and I am convinced that this pill absolutely strengthens my eye to prevent tearing. I ordered another two bottles and will not be caught without it again. Since resuming Jarrow's Astaxanthin I have not had another corneal tear. As long as Jarrow does not change the formula, I will not stop taking this. Although I was not expecting it to repair the damage to my sight caused by years damage, I am slowly starting to realize a change in my vision. (Emphasis on slowly, the sight in my left eye was severely beat up from constant ripping on the surface of the eye.) This really is something incredible. I hope this review helps anyone suffering from recurrent corneal erosion. (Or eye issues in general.

Astaxanthin, 12 mg., had, to my enormous surprise, replaced my Phosphatidylserine, for maintaining memory, and SAME for removing liverspots. It's great for your eyes and skin too. I love it, and the price is good too. What more could you ask of a single vitamin

I like this brand of Astaxanthin and take it daily for overall health! It's a strong 12mg and 1 capsule is more than enough as a daily dose. I purchase it on subscribe and save and save money that way. It promotes a healthy inflammatory response, Supports skin during sun exposure (I fell asleep in the direct sun for over 2 hours with no burning whatsoever and I have fair skin), it supports joint health and eye health (my hips, knees, and ankles can feel the difference). Heard a podcast with renowned skin specialist Dr Perrcone, he said he takes it and goes out in the sun and it protects and enhances the skin. He said if his fellow dermatologists heard him they'd have a fit. Wouldn't recommend doing at high noon, but it works. You don't burn. Brown spots go away too. Noticed when I stop taking it for two weeks, joint pain, which I didn't realize I had, returns

I have been taking this for maybe six weeks, and I my skin is is SO glowy. I am not sure if it would prevent a sunburn because I still wear sunscreen, but my skin tone has definitely changed and become more "rosy," is the best way I know how to describe it. You have to take it for more than a month though, for the people who took it for a month and quit because they weren't seeing results
