Pediatric anemia treatment evaluation
Oral lactoferrin as a treatment of pediatrics' anemia resulted from chronic kidney diseases: a randomized controlled trial.
Most Relevant Research
We explored an important question regarding anemia management in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In a randomized clinical trial, we compared the effectiveness of oral lactoferrin and intravenous iron dextran in treating anemia related to CKD in pediatrics.

The study involved 60 children who were divided into two groups: one received 100 mg of oral lactoferrin daily for three months, while the other group was treated with IV iron dextran three times a week. After the treatment period, we observed significant changes in several blood parameters among those taking oral lactoferrin, specifically in hemoglobin, red blood cells, and various other indicators related to anemia.

However, while both treatments proved effective, we found no significant differences between the two groups overall in improving anemia symptoms after three months. Ultimately, while oral lactoferrin showed promising results, it did not outperform IV iron dextran to a degree that would change treatment choices.

Ferritin has risen
Most Useful Review
I am truly grateful that I discovered Lactoferrin! I have chronic anaemia and struggled to increase my ferritin levels. After ceasing iron supplements, my ferritin dropped to 3. Thankfully, Lactoferrin raised it to 56! My health has greatly improved; my depression has lifted, my sleep quality has enhanced, and I've gained warmth in my limbs. This supplement has remarkable properties against various viruses and aids in cell oxygenation, boosting stamina and recovery from illness.

Lactoferrin shows potential antifungal effects
Impact of Brief Exposure to Lysozyme and Lactoferrin on Pathogenic Attributes of Oral Candida.
Most Relevant Research
Our research investigated how brief exposure to lysozyme and lactoferrin affects pathogenic traits of two common Candia species, C. albicans and C. dubliniensis, which are often responsible for oral infections. We focused on factors like how well these fungi adhere to cells and surfaces in the mouth, their ability to form germ tubes, their cell surface hydrophobicity, and their production of harmful substances called haemolysins.

After treating these Candida isolates with lysozyme and lactoferrin for just one hour, we assessed their susceptibility and observed notable changes over a longer 48-hour incubation period. The results indicated that exposure to either lysozyme or lactoferrin could significantly reduce the adhesion and harmful properties of these yeast species in lab tests.

These findings suggest that even a brief contact with these natural compounds might provide a sustained antifungal effect, which could be crucial in managing conditions like oral candidosis. Given the growing resistance to standard antifungal treatments, we believe exploring the application of lysozyme and lactoferrin could lead to innovative therapies for yeast infections.

Effective for anemia
Most Useful Review
I was taking iron for my anemia and developed symptoms of a yeast infection. I discovered that yeast feeds on iron, hindering its absorption. Lactoferrin binds with iron, making it inaccessible to yeast and directing it to my cells. I'm grateful to iHerb for offering this product at a reasonable price.

Lactoferrin reduces diarrhea in children
Efficacy of lactoferrin supplementation in pediatric infections: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a comprehensive review and meta-analysis to understand how lactoferrin (LF) supplementation affects diarrhea in children. This involved examining a number of randomized controlled trials involving participants under 18 years old.

From our analysis, which sifted through an impressive 1,594 citations, we identified 25 studies that met our criteria. Notably, out of these, 14 studies focused specifically on diarrhea. Our findings indicated that LF supplementation was linked to fewer children experiencing diarrhea compared to those receiving a placebo.

Specifically, the odds of having diarrhea were reduced (with an odds ratio of 0.56) when children were given LF compared to those who weren't. This suggests that lactoferrin could be helpful in reducing the incidence of diarrhea in the pediatric population. However, it's important to note that while the results are promising, further refinement in trial design is necessary to fully understand LF's potential as a public health tool.

Odour reduction
Most Useful Review
This is a supplement I frequently buy. Although the price has increased, I continue taking it for my intestinal health. Unless I consume a lot of fatty foods or desserts, I no longer notice any stool odour. I believe this has also eliminated body odour, particularly noticeable in summer. I even give a small amount to my dog, and he too has benefited from reduced stool odour. However, caution is advised when administering it to pets.

Lactoferrin may treat stress-induced IBS
Vitamin D and lactoferrin attenuate stress-induced colitis in Wistar rats via enhancing AMPK expression with inhibiting mTOR-STAT3 signaling and modulating autophagy.
Most Relevant Research
We explored how lactoferrin might alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by examining its effects on stress-induced colitis in Wistar rats. In our study, we used a chronic wrap-restraint stress model to simulate the psychological stress that contributes to IBS.

The rats were divided into four groups: naïve rats, those subjected to stress, and two groups that received either vitamin D or lactoferrin. Our findings indicated that both lactoferrin and vitamin D improved various health markers compared to the stressed rats. Notably, lactoferrin treatment resulted in enhanced social behavior, increased levels of beneficial interleukin-10, and improved autophagy in the colon.

Furthermore, lactoferrin demonstrated a remarkable ability to decrease inflammatory markers and stress levels, suggesting it may modulate the body’s response to the inflammation linked with IBS. The results indicate that lactoferrin could be more effective than vitamin D for treating stress-induced colitis, making it a promising nutritional supplement for those struggling with IBS.

Lactoferrin reduces acne inflammation
Lactoferrin regulates sebogenesis and inflammation in SZ95 human sebocytes and mouse model of acne.
Most Relevant Research
We aimed to explore how lactoferrin affects acne by testing its anti-inflammatory and anti-lipid properties on human sebaceous gland cells and a mouse model. Using SZ95 cells, we treated them with varying concentrations of lactoferrin to observe its impact on cell viability, lipid content, and gene expression related to fat metabolism and inflammation.

Our tests showed that lactoferrin greatly reduced lipid accumulation in these cells while also lowering levels of inflammatory markers. In the acne mouse model, lactoferrin treatment also significantly reduced inflammation and lipid production. Additionally, it led to a decrease in the number of sebaceous gland cells and increased cell death, providing further evidence of its effectiveness.

We found that lactoferrin treatment resulted in lower protein levels associated with inflammation and lipid synthesis in the mice. Overall, our findings indicate that lactoferrin could play a beneficial role in managing acne by targeting both sebogenesis and inflammation.
