We conducted a study that explored the effectiveness of topical treatments using herbal ingredients, specifically focusing on Indian pennywort, walnut, and turmeric, for managing eczema. Our research included three different formulations—a micro emulsion, gel, and ointment—derived from these extracts. We treated 360 eczema patients in a controlled clinical trial, comparing the results of our formulations with placebo treatments.
Throughout the study, we observed various clinical signs of eczema, including erythema (redness), oedema (swelling), scaling, itching, and lichenification (thickened skin). Interestingly, while each formulation showed benefits, the micro emulsion was particularly effective in reducing redness and swelling. The gel formulation stood out for relieving itching more effectively, whereas the ointment proved to be the best option for managing scaling and lichenification.
It’s important to note that while turmeric was included in our formulations, we couldn't isolate its specific effect due to its combination with other ingredients. However, the overall results suggest that these herbal treatments could serve as promising alternatives for eczema care.
