We explored the impact of N-acetylcysteine, an antioxidant, on the preservation of cold-stored platelets. The study focused on understanding how this treatment might reduce the harmful effects caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during cold storage.
Platelet concentrates were categorized into three groups: those stored at room temperature, those kept cold, and those cold-stored with added N-acetylcysteine at varying concentrations. After five days of storage, we measured ROS production, lipid peroxidation, platelet activation, and other quality indicators.
Our findings highlighted that N-acetylcysteine effectively diminished the production of ROS, thus protecting the cold-stored platelets from damage and premature clearance by the immune system in both lab settings and live models. Importantly, using the right amount of N-acetylcysteine significantly improved the survival of these platelets in circulation.
Overall, this study sheds light on the potential benefits of incorporating antioxidants in platelet storage practices to enhance their functionality and longevity.

I was sceptical about this Life Extension N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) given other brands I'd had. However, it worked as hoped during my cold, preventing bronchitis. As someone with early emphysema and COPD, I use it at the first sign of a cold to avoid doctor visits. This will be my go-to NAC, as it’s effective and reasonably priced.

Great for shortening a cold! I bought it in anticipation of the cold and flu season, needing it sooner than expected after catching my husband's cold. I started feeling sick on the 31st and took a 600mg capsule twice daily. By the 5th, I was back at work, feeling much better! This time, I expelled nasty mucus easily and avoided a prolonged upper respiratory infection. I consider this a record recovery time for me!

This is an excellent cold remedy. It’s an absolute analogue of ACC, with 60 capsules for the same price as 10 effervescent tablets! Acetylcysteine acts as a mucolytic, expectorant, and antioxidant agent for respiratory diseases. When I begin to feel aches, I take an ACC capsule at night. Stay healthy!

At the first sign of a cold, if I feel phlegm beginning to form, I take one in the morning on an empty stomach, and all signs of a cold have disappeared in two days.
Cold is a term that refers to a state of low temperature, often associated with a perceptibly chilly environment or the sensation of being cool to the touch. Scientifically, cold is relative to the presence and movement of heat, which is a measure of energy within matter. In everyday terms, we experience cold through weather changes, such as during winter months, and it can also be described in the context of specific temperature ranges – for example, temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius) generally signify freezing conditions, which can impact outdoor activities, personal comfort, and various ecological systems.
Moreover, the sensation of cold is not solely dependent on temperature; factors like humidity and wind chill can enhance the feeling of coldness. When discussing cold in terms of human health, prolonged exposure to cold conditions can lead to hypothermia or frostbite if body heat is not effectively maintained. Hence, it's crucial to dress appropriately and take necessary precautions during colder months to prevent adverse effects. Understanding the concept of cold can help individuals better prepare for seasonal changes and ensure their comfort and safety.
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a modified form of the amino acid cysteine, known for its role as a powerful antioxidant and mucolytic agent. It has been widely used as a dietary supplement for various health benefits, including supporting respiratory health, detoxification, and enhancing overall immune function. NAC is particularly recognized for its ability to replenish glutathione, one of the body's most important antioxidants, which helps combat oxidative stress and protect cells from damage.
In addition to its antioxidant properties, N-Acetyl Cysteine is commonly leveraged in a clinical setting for its effectiveness in treating acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdoses, as it aids in restoring depleted glutathione levels, thus preventing liver damage. It can also be beneficial for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions, such as COPD or cystic fibrosis, as it helps in thinning mucus, making it easier to expel. While NAC is generally considered safe for most people, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions or those already on medication.
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a supplement that is primarily known for its role as an antioxidant and mucolytic agent. While it has shown potential in various medical applications, including respiratory conditions, its effectiveness in treating the common cold is not definitively established. Some studies suggest that NAC may help in reducing the severity and duration of respiratory infections due to its ability to thin mucus and enhance glutathione levels, which can support immune function. However, the evidence remains mixed, and more robust clinical trials are needed to conclude its efficacy specifically for cold symptoms.
It's essential to note that while NAC may offer some benefits, it shouldn’t replace standard methods for managing cold symptoms, such as rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications. If you're considering using NAC for cold relief, it's wise to consult with a healthcare professional first to ensure it's appropriate for your situation and to discuss the correct dosage, as individual needs and health circumstances can vary significantly.
