We examined how U.S.-grown sugar kelp, a type of edible brown seaweed, might help combat liver problems associated with obesity in mice. Mice were given a diet high in fats and sugars, with one group also receiving sugar kelp.
Remarkably, those eating sugar kelp showed less weight gain and reduced levels of harmful cholesterol and fats in their liver. They also experienced less liver inflammation and fibrosis compared to those on the higher-fat diet without kelp.
These findings suggest that sugar kelp could be a beneficial addition to diets aimed at reducing health issues related to obesity.

Study finds Nori lowers cholesterol
A Nori but not a Konbu, dietary supplement decreases the cholesterolaemia, liver fat infiltration and mineral bioavailability in hypercholesterolaemic growing Wistar rats.
We looked into the effects of algae, particularly Nori, on cholesterol levels in growing Wistar rats fed a high-cholesterol diet. The study involved three groups of rats over three weeks, with one group receiving Nori and another Konbu.
While Nori significantly reduced plasma cholesterol compared to the control, both algae types didn’t notably change body weight or organ size. Interestingly, rats on Nori showed better mineral absorption, although liver fat issues were still present.
In short, Nori could be a promising supplement for reducing cholesterol, but more research is necessary to see if these benefits apply to humans.

High cholesterol, or hyperlipidemia, is a medical condition characterized by an elevated level of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that’s essential for building healthy cells, but too much of it can lead to serious health issues, including heart disease and stroke. Cholesterol is carried through the blood by lipoproteins, with two main types being low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol, can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, while HDL, known as "good" cholesterol, helps carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver.
Factors contributing to high cholesterol can include poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, and genetic predisposition. Regular health screenings are crucial, as high cholesterol often presents no overt symptoms. Maintaining a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, coupled with regular physical activity and avoiding tobacco, can help manage cholesterol levels effectively. In some cases, medications may be necessary to control high cholesterol, so consulting with a healthcare provider is key for tailored advice.
Kelp is a type of large, brown seaweed that thrives in underwater forests in shallow ocean waters, particularly in nutrient-rich areas along coastlines. This fast-growing marine plant can reach lengths of up to 150 feet and is often found in rocky, coastal regions where it plays a crucial role in the marine ecosystem. Kelp not only provides habitat and food for a diverse range of sea life, including fish, sea otters, and various invertebrates, but it also helps to stabilize the sea floor and reduce coastal erosion.
In addition to its ecological importance, kelp has gained popularity in culinary and health circles due to its nutritional benefits. It's rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, often being used in salads, soups, and as a seasoning in various dishes. Kelp is also used in the production of alginates, which are thickening agents found in many food products and cosmetics. This versatile seaweed offers a sustainable resource for both the environment and the food industry, making it an essential component of both marine and human health.
Kelp, a type of large brown seaweed, has gained attention for its potential health benefits, including the ability to help manage high cholesterol levels. Rich in dietary fiber and various bioactive compounds, kelp may contribute to lower cholesterol by binding to bile acids and promoting their excretion. This process forces the liver to use cholesterol to produce more bile acids, potentially leading to reduced levels of circulating cholesterol in the bloodstream. Moreover, kelp is a source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their heart-healthy properties that can further aid in cholesterol management.
While incorporating kelp into your diet can be beneficial, it’s essential to approach it as part of an overall balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Eating a variety of fiber-rich foods, engaging in regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight are also crucial for managing cholesterol levels. If you have existing health conditions or are taking medications, consulting with a healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes is recommended. Kelp can be a tasty and nutritious addition to your meals, but it should not be relied upon as a sole treatment for high cholesterol.

Recent scientific studies indicate that certain types of seaweed may hold promise as a supplement for managing high cholesterol levels. One notable study focused on sugar kelp, which showed that in mice fed a high-fat diet, those receiving sugar kelp experienced reduced levels of harmful cholesterol and fats in their liver, along with less weight gain and liver inflammation compared to those not given the supplement [1]. Another study examined the effects of Nori algae on cholesterol in Wistar rats, which were also placed on a high-cholesterol diet. The rats receiving Nori demonstrated a significant reduction in plasma cholesterol levels compared to the control group. However, the researchers noted that more comprehensive studies, particularly involving humans, are essential to fully understand the benefits of Nori and its applicability as a cholesterol-lowering supplement [2]. As such, while these findings are promising, further research is warranted to confirm their effectiveness in human populations.

I switched from another supplement that didn’t seem effective and decided to try this one. Over the past month, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my energy, mood, and reduced hair loss. I felt better in the first week and excellent by the second. The capsules are tiny and easy to swallow with no unpleasant taste. I’ll certainly repurchase and continue using it to support my underactive thyroid.

High dosage caution

Be cautious! I bought this iodine for the second time and initially took it carefully, but then increased the dosage erratically. Soon, I experienced suffocation sensations in my neck. I stopped taking it after tests indicated my T4 levels were high due to the excessive iodine. While the discomfort has subsided, these high doses may not suit everyone.

This iodine supplement is exceptional! After over 10 years with hypothyroidism and cysts in my thyroid, I found this jar on my endocrinologist's recommendation. I took 1-2 capsules daily for two years, except in summer, alongside selenium and zinc. The results have been remarkable—I’ve experienced stronger nails, no hair loss, and my thyroid cysts have greatly reduced. I highly recommend it, but only after consulting with a specialist.

I took this iodine during pregnancy due to high TSH levels and after just two weeks of use, my levels normalised almost twofold. I felt less drowsy and lethargic, unlike my experience with iodomarin. Now, under my doctor’s advice, I take one capsule every three days of this larger dosage sea iodine, which is easy to swallow. I will continue this regimen.
