We explored how a novel water-soluble selenium compound, known as SeTal, impacts atopic dermatitis (AD), a common allergic skin condition. In experiments, we applied 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) to sensitized mice, creating a model for AD symptoms. By treating these mice with either SeTal or hydrocortisone, we aimed to measure the severity of skin lesions and related inflammation.

We delved into the connections between prenatal exposure to certain metals—specifically, selenium, mercury, and manganese—and the risk of allergic diseases during early childhood. Using data from 94,794 mother-infant pairs from the Japan Environment and Children's study, we analyzed maternal blood samples taken during mid-pregnancy to assess levels of these metallic elements.

Our findings point to a promising role for selenium: it appears to be linked with a reduced risk of atopic dermatitis, food allergies, allergic rhinitis, and overall allergic diseases in children by their third birthday.
