We explored the potential of Foeniculum vulgare, commonly known as fennel, in addressing allergies. The study involved a controlled comparison, where infants receiving an extract of fennel along with other herbal ingredients were monitored against a placebo group.
Although the results indicated that infants given the fennel extract experienced a reduction in crying time compared to those on placebo, the specifics on its impact on allergies were not highlighted. We're left with limited conclusive evidence regarding the direct benefits of fennel for allergy treatment. Effectively, while there was some noted reduction in distress behaviors in infants, the study doesn't robustly establish its effectiveness against allergies, leaving us with more questions than answers.
At this stage, it’s clear that the body of research concerning Foeniculum vulgare is still developing. Further focused studies are needed to give us a better understanding of its potential role in allergy management, if any.

We explored how the fruits of Foeniculum vulgare, commonly known as fennel, can impact allergies and related conditions. The study aimed to assess the fruit's ability to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), an enzyme involved in allergic reactions. Through testing with a 70% ethanol extract, we discovered that this extract significantly interrupted the production of leukotrienes, which are key players in allergy symptoms.
The research identified several active compounds in fennel, such as trans-anethole and fenchone, which also showed notable inhibition of 5-LOX activity. However, it's important to highlight that while the extract demonstrated effectiveness at a dosage of 3.2 μg/ml, it didn't show any significant impact on β-hexosaminidase release, another factor in allergic responses.
In animal models, both the extract and trans-anethole proved to reduce swelling caused by arachidonic acid. However, we must approach these findings with caution, as the specific allergenic benefits of the isolated compounds remain uncertain. Overall, this study positions Foeniculum vulgare and some of its components as potential players in tackling 5-LOX-related disorders, suggesting a promising avenue for further research on natural allergy treatments.

We explored the use of herbal medicines among patients with chronic allergic disorders in Western Saudi Arabia. The study surveyed 102 allergic patients, focusing on understanding their herbal treatment preferences and experiences. Among various herbs, foeniculum vulgare, commonly known as fennel, was included as one of the options used by the participants.
Notably, 60% of the patients reported using herbal medicines, and 9.8% specifically mentioned fennel. While many respondents indicated a subjective improvement in their symptoms after using these herbal treatments, it’s important to note that the evidence for fennel's effectiveness in treating allergies is not fully established. The study highlighted bronchial asthma patients as the most prevalent group using herbal remedies, implying a potential alignment or preference for natural treatment avenues.
Although we did find a significant association between asthma and the use of herbal medicines, the effects of foeniculum vulgare specifically were not definitively emphasized. This calls for further research to better understand how fennel and other herbal remedies may contribute to managing allergy symptoms.
