New formula not necessarily a good thing…
I happened to still have the bottle of the "old" or "original" formula for this vitamin and was able to compare the "new formula" to it.... Well, the numbers are concerning.... See, a lot of people, myself included, have trouble taking multi-vitamins formulated with an overload -- unnecessary one at that --- of vitamin Bs.... Those multi-vitamins tend to make people sick to their stomachs.... The "new formula" for this vitamin now has 200% daily value of some B vitamins, 150% of others.... Anyone with a reasonably good dietary intake doesn't need this overload of vitamins common in a variety of food items. Below I've listed the vitamins & minerals and their values between old and new formulas.... Vitamin A .... old... 70% .... new .... 70% Vitamin C .... old... 93% .... new .... 100% Vitamin D .... old... 125% .... new ....125% Vitamin E .... old... 50% .... new .... 100% *** Vitamin K .... old... 21% .... new .... 0% Vitamin B1 .... old... 100% .... new .... 200% Vitamin B2 .... old... 100% .... new .... 150% Vitamin B3 .... old... 100% .... new .... 150% Vitamin B5 .... old... 100% .... new .... 150% Vitamin B6 .... old... 100% .... new .... 200% Vitamin B7 .... old... 100% .... new .... 150% Vitamin B9 .... old... 166% .... new .... 166% Vitamin B12 .... old... 250% .... new .... 400% Calcium .... old... 31% .... new .... 10% Iron .... old... 100% .... new .... 100% Iodine .... old... 100% .... new .... 100% Zinc .... old... 73% .... new .... 73% Selenium .... old... 50% .... new .... 75% Copper .... old... 100% .... new .... 150% *** Manganese .... old... 78% .... new .... 0% *** Chromium .... old... 71% .... new .... 0% *** Magnesium .... old... 0% .... new .... 10% To sum up, the "old/original formula" lacks magnesium, while the "new formula" lacks chromium, manganese, and vitamin K.... The removal of vitamin K in particular baffles me because it is essential to the absorption & binding of calcium in bones -- without it, taking a supplement containing calcium and/or vitamin D is not only pointless, but can lead to calcium overload & kidney stones over time, especially with the supplement contains both since the body converts vitamin D to calcium. In this consumer's opinion, overloading the multi-vitamin with B vitamins and leaving out manganese and vitamin K isn't an improvement at all.... It's quite likely that many who are sensitive to overly concentrate B vitamins will be looking for a new multi-vitamin.... Every time I've had to switch my staple multi-vitamin it has been because of this same type of reformulation resulting in severe abdominal discomfort and/or distress leading to my having to research and switch brands. There is no need for any of these levels to be over 100% !!! There was nothing wrong with the "old/original" formula.... This is reformulation for the sake of reformulation, not out of necessity.... Unfortunate for the consumer. Removing vitamin K also makes the "new formula" less effective, as does removing chromium and manganese (which isn't the same as magnesium). And no one needs 400% daily value of B12! It can cause nausea, Headache, and vomiting... I will say it has one thing going for it.... The smaller size of the pills. That's about where the positives end for this consumer. 400% DV of B12 (overdose in my opinion) means I will be looking for a diff't multi-vitamin from a diff't manufacturer.... The hours of nausea just aren't acceptable to me, nor is overdosing ANY vitamin on a daily basis. The B vitamins should have been left at 100% DV or slightly over as they were in the previous formulation
