We investigated the effectiveness of zinc sulphate in treating acute bronchiolitis in children, aiming to uncover whether this supplement could help speed recovery. In our study, we closely examined 100 young patients diagnosed with the condition. Half of the children received oral zinc sulphate while the other half received a placebo.
Over the course of the treatment, we compared the clinical signs and symptoms between the two groups at several intervals: 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours after starting. Encouragingly, we observed that those in the zinc group showed a more favorable trend in recovery compared to the placebo group across all time points. Notably, significant differences were noted in improvements of coughing and wheezing at the 48 and 72-hour marks.
Remarkably, we found that 98% of the children who received zinc sulphate achieved full recovery within 72 hours of treatment—indicating a rapid response to the therapy. Our findings suggest that zinc sulphate can notably accelerate the improvement of clinical symptoms in acute bronchiolitis. Therefore, we feel confident recommending zinc sulphate as a helpful treatment option for this condition.

Significant findings on zinc impact
We explored the effects of zinc, combined with thymic hormones, on immunization against bronchitis in vaccinated chickens. In a detailed study, chickens were given a trivalent killed vaccine that protected against infectious bronchitis, bursal disease, and Newcastle disease. They were split into groups, receiving various combinations of zinc and thymic hormones to see how it influenced their immune response.
We observed that most of the vaccinated groups experienced significant improvements in immunity when treated with zinc alongside thymic hormones. Particularly, the combination of thymulin and zinc led to remarkable increases in antibodies against the viruses—showing increases of up to 671.7%. This suggests that zinc can play a crucial role in enhancing the immune response following vaccination, notably against bronchitis.
Additionally, we noted the strongest cell-mediated immunity in those treated with a mix of both thymic hormones and zinc. This means that zinc not only helps boost antibodies but might also enhance the overall immune activity against infections, including bronchitis.

Our investigation focused on how zinc affects immune responses in chickens challenged with the infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Using specialized chicken lines that differ in their resistance to IBV, we tested the effectiveness of zinc and manganese supplements bound to amino acids compared to traditional sulfate-bound versions.
Interestingly, we found that the amino acid-bound supplements improved weight gain in the IBV-resistant chicken line before any viral challenge occurred. Following the IBV challenge, chickens that received zinc in amino acid complexes showed reduced respiratory symptoms compared to those that received sulfate-bound supplements. Notably, these chickens demonstrated milder clinical signs and less severe lung issues later on.
Additionally, the immune response was more robust in birds that received zinc in amino acid form, particularly in terms of total antibody levels in the serum. Overall, the amino acid-bound trace mineral supplements appeared to enhance immunity more than the standard sulfate-bound forms, indicating that zinc could play a beneficial role in managing bronchitis in chickens. However, while the study provides promising results about zinc's impact, it's essential to note that results can vary, and further research is necessary to confirm these benefits in broader contexts.

We investigated the impact of zinc on elderly individuals suffering from infections, particularly focusing on its influence on conditions like chronic obstructive bronchitis. The study included 67 elderly subjects who were experiencing infections that were resistant to conventional antibiotic treatments.
Our analysis revealed that low levels of both zinc and CD4+ cells were associated with higher risks of severe infection relapses, highlighting the importance of maintaining adequate zinc levels for immune function. Notably, in our findings, supplementing zinc daily for one month showed a potential to lessen the risk of infections in these elderly individuals.

Limited impact of zinc treatment
In a quest to understand the role of zinc in treating bronchiolitis, we conducted a double-blind, randomized clinical trial involving 94 infants aged between 2 and 23 months. These infants, all admitted to Mousavi Hospital in Zanjan, Iran, were divided into three groups: one receiving just hypertonic saline, while the others got either vitamin D or zinc supplements alongside saline.
Throughout the study, we monitored several factors, including wheezing, respiratory distress, and the duration of hospitalization. Despite our hopes, we found no significant improvements related to zinc treatment. Specifically, the infants who received zinc showed respiratory rates, hospitalization times, and other symptoms quite similar to those in the control group who only received hypertonic saline.
Ultimately, our findings suggest that adding zinc to the treatment regimen for bronchiolitis does not yield any measurable benefits. This highlights the need for further research to discover effective treatments for this widespread condition in infants.
