We investigated the antiviral properties of silymarin against the influenza A virus in cultured cells. The study found that silymarin reduced viral activity by 98% without any cytotoxic effects, compared to oseltamivir, which showed only a 52% reduction.
Additionally, we analyzed how silymarin inhibits viral mRNA synthesis. Our results suggest that silymarin affects late-stage viral RNA production more effectively than oseltamivir. This promising outcome indicates that silymarin could be a valuable option for treating influenza infections.

We explored the antiviral effects of Silybum marianum, specifically its active compound silybin, against the influenza A virus. Through initial screenings of 89 medicinal plants, we found that silybin effectively inhibits flu infections. Further research led us to synthesize compounds, with 23-(S)-2-amino-3-phenylpropanoyl-silybin showing the most promise. Both silybin and its derivative reduced virus replication in infected mice and targeted factors involved in viral replication. These findings suggest that Silybum marianum could be a valuable option in the fight against influenza A.

We examined the effects of compounds isolated from Silybum marianum seeds on influenza A(H5N1). Using hot water extraction followed by resin and chromatography methods, we identified seven bioactive compounds. Notably, some of these compounds showed promising antiviral activity, with IC₅₀ values indicating effective action against the virus. However, concerns arose regarding cytotoxicity against liver cells. Overall, while certain compounds exhibited potential benefits against influenza, their safety and effectiveness warrant further investigation.
