Hashimoto's / thyroid / MTHFR patients – this makes me SLEEPY!
If you are looking at methyl B-12, then you probably realized or suspected somehow that you might have a problem with your methylation cycle. If you're like me (you would need to get tested to know), this might make you sleepy...very sleepy! It makes me so tired that I can't function and need to take a good 2-3 hour nap about a half hour after taking the supplement. This is very bad for work! Fortunately, I figured it out pretty quickly, but what could make it difficult for people with thyroid issues, Hashimoto's and MTHFR mutations is that we are so prone to fatigue, anyway, depending on whether or not we are eating a proper diet and getting the right medication. THE GOOD: The supplement absorbs efficiently because my reaction is immediate. I need a nap. Nothing will keep me awake. Since learning this, I will only take it in the evenings and it should help me sleep wonderfully. So that's good. We will see what my next blood tests say about my B12 levels... THE BAD: Like I said...I need a nap! However, it doesn't give me anxiety like so many other forms of B12. If B vitamins give you anxiety, it would be a good idea for you to get tested for MTHFR mutations. They are quite common and sadly most people never knew about them until recently, so a lot of people needlessly suffered with poor methylation cycles and improper nutrition. (Note to people who think supplements are a waste of money: you don't know what you're talking about.) A LITTLE ABOUT MY MEDICAL HISTORY AND GENETICS: I am a Hashimoto's hypothyroid patient and I also have the MTHFR mutation homozygous a1298c (also known as 1298cc), which interferes with the methylation cycle. There seems to often be a MTHFR mutation of some sort with Hashimoto's patients, so maybe there is some sort of correlation. This is not known yet. If you have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, get a test for Hashimoto's because there is almost a 100% chance you have Hashimoto's. Doctors just don't test for it. Once you realize you have Hashimoto's, you can begin to start eating appropriately and many of your symptoms will start to go away (yay), but you may have difficulty getting the right amount of nutrition if you're lazy with your diet or if you have a MTHFR mutation that you are not taking into account...so, get tested for MTHFR mutations, too! In case you've read this far and have realized you and I have the exact same issues (Hashimoto's, hypothyroidism, MTHFR homozygous a1298c), then here's what works for me: • Folinic acid (not folic acid) • B1 / Thiamin • B2 / Riboflavin • if I take B12, then I should take methyl B12 and apparently I can only take it at night unless I want to fall asleep during the day • Natural Desiccated Thyroid (not levothyroxine or Synthroid) â€" this last one is very personal, so take it with a grain of salt. Some people do better on synthetics or compounds or a very specific brand of Natural Desiccated Thyroid. Just keep it in mind if you are on levo and these vitamins aren't helping you with fatigue or hair+loss. Best wishes, hope it helps
