Nattokinase identified as allergen
We examined the effects of nattokinase, a protease found in natto, on allergies. Our study involved eight individuals who experienced allergic reactions after consuming natto, specifically the sticky substance surrounding the beans. Some participants tested negative for polygamma glutamic acid (PGA), which was previously identified as a potential allergen.

Throughout our investigation, we employed skin prick tests, immunoblotting, and ELISA to assess the reactivity to nattokinase and other components. Notably, we discovered that a subset of patients, particularly those who were negative for PGA, exhibited an allergic response to nattokinase. This finding suggests that nattokinase may act as a distinct allergen in certain individuals.

In the end, we identified nattokinase as a new allergen linked to natto allergy, particularly in those not sensitized to PGA. While our study highlights the allergenic potential of nattokinase, its broader implications for allergy treatment remain to be fully explored.
