In our investigation, we examined the impact of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) on individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) compared to healthy volunteers.
Using a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled approach, we found that while 5-HTP led to increased pain perception in hypersensitive IBS patients, it also caused similar effects in some healthy controls.
Notably, IBS patients showed significant changes in serotonin metabolites alongside altered pain thresholds. However, these changes weren't beneficial across the board, as non-hypersensitive IBS patients did not experience the same response.

5-HTP shows limited IBS benefits
Serotonergic reinforcement of intestinal barrier function is impaired in irritable bowel syndrome.
We assessed the impact of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) on intestinal health in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and healthy individuals. In a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled study, we found that while 5-HTP improved mucosal serotonin levels and reinforced intestinal barriers in healthy participants, the same benefits were absent in IBS patients. This suggests IBS may involve a dysfunctional serotonin system, hindering the ability to strengthen the intestinal barrier even after 5-HTP treatment. Overall, our findings indicate limited effectiveness for 5-HTP in treating IBS.

I feel MORE depressed after taking this! I started with a full capsule at bedtime, but it kept me up all night with a rapid heartbeat! Even trying just a little bit each night for a week made me feel REALLY depressed and irritable. I do not recommend this product.

I’m a doctor and advocate for a healthy lifestyle. I've used 5-HTP for over a year, and it has proven effective, non-addictive, and helps with appetite normalization and weight loss. I take 1 capsule daily on an empty stomach at bedtime. My irritability has lessened, and my sleep has greatly improved!

NEGATIVE EFFECTS WARNING - MOOD! After taking the 5-HTP pills with my ADAM vitamins, I became incredibly irritable and aggressive, which was entirely the opposite of what I anticipated. My wife experienced the same disappointing effects of irritability, leading us to stop taking this medicine. I share my experience because others might be facing similar issues. Though I noticed slight improvements in memory concentration, the resulting anger and uncontrollable irritability were overwhelming.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by a range of symptoms including abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and altered bowel habits, which can manifest as diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both. The exact cause of IBS isn't fully understood, but it's believed to stem from a complex interplay of factors including gut sensitivity, changes in gut motility, and psychosocial elements such as stress or anxiety. IBS is often classified into different types based on the predominant symptoms, such as IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D), IBS with constipation (IBS-C), and a mixed type (IBS-M).
Managing IBS can be multifaceted, often requiring a tailored approach based on individual symptoms and triggers. Dietary changes are frequently recommended, including low-FODMAP diets, which involve reducing fermentable carbohydrates that can exacerbate symptoms. In addition to dietary adjustments, stress management techniques and medications aimed at addressing specific symptoms, such as anti-diarrheal agents or laxatives, may also be beneficial. Since IBS can significantly impact quality of life, consulting with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian is essential for developing an effective management plan.
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. It is derived from the seeds of the griffonia simplicifolia plant and is often used as a dietary supplement to help improve mood, reduce anxiety, and aid in sleep. Many people turn to 5-HTP to support their mental health, particularly those struggling with conditions like depression or insomnia, as it is thought to help increase serotonin levels in the brain.
While some studies suggest that 5-HTP may be effective for these purposes, it’s essential to approach it with caution. The effectiveness can vary from person to person, and it's not a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment. If you're considering incorporating 5-HTP supplements into your routine, it's wise to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you're taking other medications or have underlying health conditions. Remember, while natural supplements can be beneficial, they are not without potential side effects and interactions.
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a supplement derived from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia and is often used by individuals seeking to improve mood and sleep quality. Some research suggests that 5-HTP may help with symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), primarily due to its potential effects on serotonin levels. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in regulating mood and gastrointestinal function, is found in large quantities in the gut. This connection implies that increasing serotonin levels through 5-HTP may help alleviate some gastrointestinal discomfort associated with IBS.
However, while some small studies and anecdotal evidence indicate that 5-HTP may reduce symptoms such as abdominal pain and improve overall gastrointestinal function, definitive and large-scale clinical trials are still lacking. As with any supplement, it's essential to consult with a healthcare provider before starting 5-HTP, especially for those with IBS, as individual responses can vary and potential interactions with other medications may occur. Ultimately, while 5-HTP may hold promise for some individuals dealing with IBS, more research is necessary to understand its effectiveness and safety fully.
Based on user reviews, the time it takes to see results from this supplement can vary. Some users reported experiencing positive effects as quickly as the first day, particularly in terms of mood improvement and reduced irritability Read Review. Others noted a more gradual change, with improvements becoming apparent after about a week of consistent use Read Review. Additionally, some users found noticeable effects after a month of taking the supplement regularly Read Review.
However, it’s important to note that reactions can be mixed. While many experienced benefits, others encountered negative side effects, including increased irritability, which led them to stop taking the supplement Read Review. Thus, while some users may see results quickly, your experience may vary based on individual reactions and consistent use over time.
The scientific evidence surrounding the use of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) as a supplement for managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is quite mixed. A study exploring the role of 5-HTP in IBS found that while it led to altered pain perception in hypersensitive IBS patients, it did not provide overall beneficial effects, particularly among those who were non-hypersensitive [1]. This indicates that individual responses to 5-HTP may vary significantly depending on the patient’s sensitivity to pain, calling into question its general effectiveness for the entire IBS population.
Further research highlighted that while 5-HTP improved mucosal serotonin levels and supported intestinal barriers in healthy individuals, patients with IBS did not experience these benefits. This suggests that IBS might involve a dysfunctional serotonin system, which hampers the desired effects of 5-HTP treatment [2]. Overall, while 5-HTP shows some potential, its effectiveness in alleviating IBS symptoms appears limited and may vary between individual patients.
Based on user reviews, experiences with this supplement vary significantly, with several users noting positive improvements in mood, irritability, and sleep quality. For example, one user reported that they noticed positive effects on stress from the very first day, highlighting a significant reduction in irritability and a restored ability to enjoy life after initially struggling with insomnia and mood issues Read Review. Another user, a doctor, mentioned benefits such as lesser irritability and improved sleep quality after regular use over the course of a year Read Review.
Conversely, numerous users experienced the opposite effect, reporting increased irritability and mood disturbances after taking the supplement. For instance, one reviewer mentioned that they and their spouse both became irritable and aggressive after starting the product, which led them to discontinue use Read Review. Another user echoed this sentiment, describing irritability after consistent use, even when expecting calming effects Read Review. As these anecdotal experiences illustrate, while some users found relief and improvement in their symptoms, individual results can vary widely, emphasizing the importance of monitoring personal responses closely.
Based on user reviews, combining this supplement with other vitamins can lead to mixed results for managing symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). For instance, one user reported significant irritability and aggression after taking the supplement alongside ADAM vitamins, ultimately leading them to discontinue use due to overwhelming negative effects Read Review. This sentiment was echoed by another user who experienced similar irritability upon consistent use of the supplement, suggesting that for some, combining it with other supplements may not yield the intended calming effects Read Review.
Conversely, some users have found the supplement effective on its own, reporting improved moods and reduced irritability Read Review. A doctor noted the benefits of taking the supplement separately, stating that it has positively impacted their sleep and overall mood after a year of use Read Review. Therefore, while certain users reported success with the supplement alone, caution is advised for those considering combining it with other supplements, particularly if they experience sensitivities or adverse reactions.
Users report mixed experiences regarding the right dose of 5-HTP for treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Some individuals, like a user who identifies as a doctor, took 1 capsule daily on an empty stomach at bedtime and noted significant improvements in irritability and sleep quality Read Review. Others, however, experienced increased irritability after taking the supplement. Specifically, one review mentioned that taking 5-HTP led to feelings of anger and uncontrollable irritability, prompting the user to stop taking it altogether Read Review.
Another user echoed this sentiment, stating that they found 5-HTP made them irritable despite its intended calming effects. This raises concerns about the variability in response to the supplement, suggesting that individuals may have different tolerances or reactions depending on their unique circumstances. While some found it to be an effective addition for managing stress and improving mood Read Review, others faced adverse effects, indicating that finding the right dosage may require careful experimentation and should be monitored closely.

For me, it makes me irritable for some reason. I've tried it several times, but drinking it consistently results in irritability. I found information online suggesting that some feel calm after 5-HTP, but I couldn't locate anyone who mentioned feeling irritated. It’s quite perplexing. Ultimately, I decided to stop taking it as it seemed like a waste.
