We delved into the effects of curcumin, particularly through a method called photodynamic therapy (CUR-PDT), in the context of rheumatoid arthritis. We investigated the effects of curcumin, a natural compound found in turmeric, along with vitamin D, on knee osteoarthritis (OA) using a rat model. The study divided male Wistar rats into five groups: a control group, a group receiving curcumin, another getting vitamin D, one that received a combination of both, and a sham-operated group. Each supplement was given daily for 12 weeks to assess their impacts on pain and inflammation associated with OA.
Our findings reveal that curcumin and vitamin D worked well to reduce pain levels individually. Interestingly, when combined, they provided even better relief from pain. We also observed notable changes in inflammation markers; while pro-inflammatory cytokines were reduced, the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) increased in the groups receiving the supplements. Additionally, curcumin and vitamin D demonstrated a beneficial effect on oxidative stress markers, leading to improved joint structure and cartilage health.
Histological analysis showed that the treated groups maintained better joint architecture, less inflammation of the synovium, and preserved cartilage integrity compared to the control group. Therefore, we recognize the potential of curcumin and vitamin D as natural agents that could play a role in managing knee osteoarthritis and associated pain. This research suggests they may offer valuable strategies for delaying OA progression and enhancing patient care in clinical settings.
