We assessed the prevalence and patterns of herbal supplement use among patients with autoimmune skin diseases, specifically dermatomyositis (DM) and cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). In this study, we found that the rate of herbal supplement use was notably prevalent—about 32% of the surveyed patients reported using them.

Among these patients, we observed a trend where younger individuals and those from Hispanic/Latino backgrounds were more likely to try herbal treatments. However, when we honed in on the effects of elderberry, we noticed a concerning pattern. Specifically, about 62% of DM patients and 50% of CLE patients experienced a disease onset or exacerbation after using elderberry, suggesting a potential risk associated with this supplement.

As we examined these findings, it became clear that while many patients gravitate towards herbal remedies, supplements like elderberry may carry risks, particularly regarding immune system regulation in autoimmune disorders. This reinforces the need for healthcare providers to actively engage with patients about their use of such treatments.

Prevented illness
Good day! Many know about the magical properties of elderberry, which I discovered recently. Particularly in autumn, I decided to order it, and it was the right decision. I took two capsules on the first day, and then one each day for a week, without getting ill! I recommend it to everyone, as the capsules are easy to take and have no aftertaste.

Fights viruses
I take this to boost my immunity during autumn and winter. The first time I ordered a stock, I was pleased with the results. I took two capsules daily for prevention, and during this period, viruses bypassed me. Considering the concentrate of 10:1, consuming large quantities of berries is unrealistic. This elderberry brand has pleased me with its quality, and I recommend it for purchase. All health!

I highly recommend black elderberry! A trusted doctor advised me to start taking it in the autumn. Our family benefitted immensely—none were caught off guard by the flu epidemic! In the past, I needed multiple drugs for similar results, but this worked on its own.

I did not find that I had an autoimmune disorder in an aggressive form. This does not work for me; perhaps I need to take five pieces. I have tested various companies, and most vitamins do not deliver results. For example, I had to take three times the biotin dosage needed for effect. However, I found vitamin A to be of acceptable quality from this brand.
