don't take iodine supplement for Hashimoto's/hypothyroidism
I got this product after I had recently been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder/ Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis/ hypothyroidism. I thought I needed an iodine supplement, and so I thought this product would be safer because it was a smaller amount of natural iodine, in a natural herbal supplement. Then I found out from an expert, Dr. Isabella Wentz, author of New York Times Bestseller "Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, the Root Cause", that in my disorder as well as most thyroid disorders (80% of thyroid disorders are Hashimoto's, an autoimmune disorder, most undiagnosed as such) iodine supplementation is not only not necessary, because there is no iodine insufficiency, but it is also not appropriate and can and will likely cause harm. The problem is most conventional doctors and even some alternative doctors know very little about thyroid disorders and what is really going on, therefore there is much "traditional" advice that is just inaccurate. The truth is that, even in small amounts, "natural" iodine supplementation will likely "feed the fire" of autoimmunity and make things worse, not better, by triggering the immune system to further destroy the thyroid gland. This is true even if the levels of thyroid hormones initially increase, or if you initially feel better, and the long term damage won't be seen unless your doctor knows to monitor thyroid antibody titers, which measure increasing thyroid damage. Natural supplements can and do still cause harm, they are not without the same risks as some prescriptions. I promptly returned the supplement and wanted to put out a warning to others to be very careful in this area. Be sure you are diagnosed properly by a doctor, and make sure you have a doctor, holistic, alternative or functional if possible, who really knows what they are doing in regard to thyroid conditions. I have seen too many reviews here and elsewhere of people getting fed up and diagnosing themselves and deciding to take iodine supplements to treat a suspected disorder, and of doctors recommending the wrong thing, and potentially harming their patients with their misunderstanding. You are responsible for taking charge of your own health. There are natural prescription thyroid hormones that will help you a whole lot more, and supplements aren't always better or safer. Supplementing with iodine can even trigger Hashimoto's to develop if you didn't have it before. My doctor recommended the book by Dr. Isabella Wentz on Hashimoto's, (the author also has a website and a new book coming out), as soon as she diagnosed me. I strongly DO NOT recommend this supplement if you are taking it for some kind of thyroid disorder!
