We explored the use of intraruminal devices containing zinc oxide, designed to prevent facial eczema in sheep while also addressing trace element deficiencies. Specifically, we looked at how adding selenium and cobalt to these devices might improve the health of pregnant ewes by monitoring changes in blood selenium and serum Vitamin B12 levels.
The devices we tested included 16.4 mg of selenium, in the form of sodium selenate, and 20.4 mg of cobalt, provided as cobalt sulfate. Our findings revealed that these devices were effective in raising and sustaining higher blood selenium levels for at least 84 days, with notable increases in serum Vitamin B12 for up to 42 days.
This dual action means that the devices not only offer protection against facial eczema but also help prevent trace element deficiencies in sheep, demonstrating a valuable approach for improving overall animal health.

Antioxidants' mixed results on eczema
Remarkable success of antioxidant treatment (selenomethionine and vitamin E) to a 34-year old patient with posterior subcapsular cataract, keratoconus, severe atopic eczema and asthma.
We explored the effects of an antioxidant treatment combining selenomethionine and vitamin E on a young adult suffering from various conditions, including severe atopic eczema. This patient, at just 34 years old, also experienced a posterior subcapsular cataract, keratoconus, and asthma, showcasing the complexity of his health situation.
The study focused on understanding how selenium, in conjunction with other treatments, could alleviate eczema symptoms among the other health issues presented. However, we noted that the evaluation primarily emphasized the general benefits of this antioxidant treatment regimen rather than isolating the specific effects of selenium on eczema itself.
It is important to be clear that the findings do not provide conclusive evidence on selenium's effectiveness for eczema alone. Instead, they suggest potential benefits when used as part of a broader treatment strategy, which may be insightful for individuals looking for holistic approaches to managing similar health concerns.

Selenium showed no eczema improvement
The effect on atopic dermatitis of supplementation with selenium and vitamin E.
We conducted an intriguing study to see how selenium supplementation could affect individuals with atopic dermatitis, a common form of eczema. For this research, we enlisted 60 adults and divided them into three groups in a randomised double-blind manner. One group received 600 micrograms of selenium on its own, another group took 600 micrograms of selenium along with 600 IU of vitamin E, while the third group received a placebo.
After 12 weeks of supplementation, we noted significant increases in selenium levels in the blood as well as improved activity of an important enzyme that relies on selenium in two of the groups. However, we did not see any meaningful improvement in the severity of eczema symptoms across the groups. This indicates that even though the selenium-enriched yeast was absorbed well by the body, it did not seem to effectively reach the skin or lead to any noticeable benefits for those dealing with eczema.
Overall, despite promising indications of selenium uptake, our findings suggest that selenium supplementation alone—whether taken with vitamin E or not—does not provide a worthwhile enhancement in managing atopic dermatitis.

I get eczema on my hands from heavy metals like nuts and cocoa. I had trouble with my hand eczema for more than a month, but after starting selenium, my fingers returned to their original clean state within a few days, much to my family’s surprise! Selenium aids detoxification and the excretion of heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, lead, and arsenic. It has a strong antioxidant effect that protects blood vessels and skin from oxidative damage. I take 1-2 pills a day and plan to continue.

Selenium's role in eczema unclear
Drinking deep-sea water restores mineral imbalance in atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome.
We observed the effects of deep-sea water consumption on patients with atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS) to understand how it may impact skin health and mineral balance. Our study involved 33 individuals who drank Amami no Mizu, a type of deep-sea water, for six months. We monitored the levels of essential and toxic minerals in their hair and assessed changes in their skin symptoms.
The results were intriguing. While we noted a decrease in potassium levels among the participants, selenium levels increased significantly after they consumed the deep-sea water. Importantly, we also found a reduction in toxic minerals like mercury and lead. Furthermore, the skin condition improved in 27 out of 33 patients, indicating a potential benefit of mineral balance in managing eczema symptoms.
However, it's essential to note that while the selenium levels rose, the study did not specifically isolate its impact on eczema. Instead, it focused on the overall effect of deep-sea water. Consequently, while we saw promising results regarding skin improvement, we cannot definitively conclude that selenium alone is a cure for eczema.

Frequently Asked Questions
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition characterized by inflamed, itchy, and red patches on the skin. It is most commonly seen in children but can occur at any age. The condition can range from mild to severe and often leads to dry, scaly skin that can become cracked or even bleed. Eczema is believed to be related to a combination of genetic predisposition, skin barrier dysfunction, and environmental factors, including allergens, irritants, and stress.
Treatment for eczema often involves a multi-faceted approach, including the use of moisturizers to keep the skin hydrated, topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, and, in some cases, antihistamines to alleviate itching. Identifying and avoiding triggers such as certain soaps, fabrics, or foods can also play a crucial role in managing the condition. While there is currently no cure for eczema, ongoing advancements in research have led to the development of new therapies, including biologic medications that target specific components of the immune response, offering hope for those with moderate to severe cases.

Based on user reviews, the time it takes to see results from this supplement for eczema can vary. Some users report noticeable improvements in just a few days after starting the supplement. For instance, one user mentioned that their hand eczema improved significantly within a few days of taking selenium, leading to a return to their skin's original state Read Review.
On the other hand, another user experienced a longer-term resolution, with their eczema disappearing over a more extended period while taking the supplement for several weeks to months Read Review. Overall, while some may see quick results, others might need to take the supplement consistently for a longer duration to notice benefits. It appears that individual experiences can vary widely.
The scientific research on selenium as a supplement for eczema presents mixed results. For instance, a study involving 60 adults with atopic dermatitis found that while selenium supplementation showed increased blood levels of the mineral, it did not lead to any meaningful improvement in eczema symptoms after 12 weeks [3]. This raises questions about its effectiveness as a standalone treatment for this condition. Similarly, while another study examined the application of an antioxidant treatment combining selenium and vitamin E in a patient with severe atopic eczema, it did not isolate selenium's specific benefits for eczema from other health issues being treated [4].
On a more positive note, an investigation into the effects of deep-sea water consumption revealed that participants experienced a significant increase in selenium levels alongside improvements in skin condition for many individuals, though this study did not specifically assess selenium's direct impact on eczema [2]. Therefore, while there are some signs that selenium may have broader health benefits, it cannot be definitively recommended as a targeted treatment for eczema based on current research.
Users have reported a range of improvements in their eczema symptoms after incorporating selenium into their routines. One review highlights a swift response, with a user stating that their hand eczema, aggravated by heavy metal exposure, improved significantly within a few days of taking the supplement Read Review. Another user was pleasantly surprised to find that their eczema on the inside of the knee disappeared over time, attributing this positive change solely to the supplement after no other interventions Read Review.
In addition to these specific cases, other users have mentioned general benefits, including enhanced immunity and improved skin health, as a result of taking selenium. One reviewer emphasized the impressive quality of the product and noted significant improvements in dryness and overall skin condition Read Review. While some individuals see rapid improvements, as evidenced by multiple reviews, it is important to remember that results can vary widely between users. Overall, selenium appears to be a promising option for those struggling with eczema, though individual experiences and symptom resolution timelines will differ.
Based on user reviews, individuals have reported positive outcomes when combining selenium with their existing supplement routines for managing eczema. One user highlighted the detoxifying effects of selenium, particularly its ability to assist in the excretion of heavy metals, which in their case was linked to hand eczema caused by exposure to nuts and cocoa Read Review. Another user noted the absence of other interventions and attributed the disappearance of their mysterious knee eczema solely to the addition of selenium to their regimen, suggesting that this supplement can effectively complement other treatments or stand alone Read Review.
Furthermore, some users have pointed out the broad benefits derived from taking selenium. An individual reported enhanced immunity and improved skin condition, indicating that selenium may work synergistically with other supplements, improving overall skin health and resilience against eczema Read Review. Overall, users seem to find selenium a valuable addition to their supplement stack for managing eczema, contributing to better outcomes while also potentially addressing other health concerns.
Based on user reviews, there appears to be variability in the dosages of Selenium that people find effective for treating eczema. One user reports taking 1-2 pills a day, mentioning that this regimen significantly improved their hand eczema in just a few days, effectively detoxifying from heavy metals as well Read Review. Another reviewer highlighted the product's overall quality and noted that "the dosage complies with specifications," suggesting satisfaction with the product’s formulation and dosage Read Review.
Additionally, one user mentioned that they started taking Selenium to aid in cancer prevention, but found the added benefit of eczema improvement as a surprising bonus Read Review. Overall, while specific dosage recommendations weren't universally stated, the experiences suggest that 1-2 pills daily might be a common choice among users seeking relief from eczema related symptoms.
