We explored the protective effects of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) against the harmful impacts of zearalenone (ZEA), a toxin from grains that can disrupt gut health. In a controlled setting, we observed that ZEA damages intestinal cells, leading to inflammation and increased permeability.

Our findings showed that SeNPs can counteract this damage by enhancing antioxidant activity and improving gut microbiota balance. Despite these promising results, it’s crucial to note that the effectiveness of SeNPs in humans still requires further investigation.

Selenium reduces toxin-induced cell death
We investigated whether selenium has a protective effect against the harmful impacts of aflatoxin B (AFB), a common toxin found in food. By studying broiler chickens over three weeks, we set up different groups to see how selenium influences cell death caused by AFB.

Our findings showed that selenium supplementation significantly reduced excess cell death in the jejunum, helping restore key biological markers to healthier levels. This research helps highlight selenium's potential as a protective agent against food-related poisonings.

Selenium improves gut health
We explored the potential of selenium-enriched Kazachstania unispora KU2 in alleviating intestinal injuries caused by the foodborne toxin patulin (PAT). Our investigation revealed that both the standard K. unispora and its selenium-enriched version helped reduce inflammation and restore gut health.

Interestingly, the selenium-enriched variant showed even greater effectiveness. It seemed to work by enhancing the production of a specific protein, SEPP1. We verified that a healthy gut microbiota was essential for these positive effects. This study hints at promising treatment options for intestinal diseases linked to foodborne toxins.

I take selenium as directed by my endocrinologist annually for three months due to subclinical hypothyroidism. I prefer Now Foods for its cost-effectiveness. While it’s hard to gauge visible effects, selenium helps reduce antibodies related to thyroid issues. My scalp condition has improved, and I’ve experienced expedited hair growth. The tablets are manageable for me, though some may find them large. Overall, I am happy with Now Foods!

Thyroid health support

Selenium has been quite beneficial; I have 250 tablets that will last a long time at a reasonable price. I take 50 mg, while my children take much lower doses. Selenium is crucial for absorbing iodine—without it, absorption is poor. After having my daughter drink Iodomarin without notable improvement, we introduced selenium prior to the Iodomarin, and within six months, her thyroid returned to normal! I often buy from Now Foods; they offer quality products.

Selenium shows protective potential
We explored how selenium might help counteract food poisoning, particularly focusing on kidney damage caused by T-2 toxin. In our study with New Zealand rabbits, we conducted a controlled trial, giving various doses of selenomethionine alongside a toxic agent.

We observed that the toxin induced significant kidney impairment and increased inflammation. Interestingly, rabbits pretreated with a low dose of selenium showed reduced oxidative damage and inflammation. This suggests that selenium could play a protective role against certain types of food poisoning, specifically in kidney health.

Chemical nausea

I trust the Now Foods brand and have ordered many products, so I tried their selenium. While it is effective for various issues, I do not recommend this particular selenium due to its horrible, chemical smell, which made me feel nauseous. It was difficult to take, and I question its authenticity. I suggest looking for selenium from a different company. I appreciate iHerb for the speedy delivery.

Selenium is essential for our health, but it must be taken under medical supervision due to its toxicity in high doses. Symptoms of selenium poisoning include a strong garlic odour from the mouth. After experiencing general weakness and muscle problems, I was prescribed selenium for three months. After a month, my energy returned, and I could engage in sports without sluggishness. This change has greatly pleased me.

Address foul breath

I noticed strong bad breath after taking a large dose of selenium daily. It was overwhelming, and despite brushing, nothing worked. I discovered that it was likely due to selenium poisoning, so I ceased its use immediately. The bad breath started to fade after a few days, so I recommend being aware of any adverse effects.

Improved life quality

I have been taking selenium as prescribed for subclinical hypothyroidism for three months each year. I initially used Solgar but switched to Now Foods due to better pricing. It's hard to notice changes, possibly due to my age (25). Selenium helps reduce antibodies in autoimmune thyroiditis, improving life quality. My trichologist also recommended it for seborrhea. I’ve noticed an improvement in my scalp and an increase in hair growth. The tablets are a reasonable size, and overall, I am pleased with the brand!

Reduced dizziness

Selenium was prescribed to me by a doctor for hypothyroidism and general body strengthening. I take one tablet during lunch with food, along with other vitamins and probiotics. Initially, I felt a boost in endurance; after exercise, my muscles didn’t hurt as much. I used to feel dizzy when getting up quickly, but that has stopped. Missing a dose brings back the dizziness, so I’m unsure how to manage that. Some reviews noted skin dryness from taking selenium alone, but adding multivitamins resolved that for me. I have been taking selenium for 2.5 months and experienced no side effects thus far.

Unpleasant side effects

Unfortunately, this selenium did not agree with me. After taking a pill, I felt an odd state akin to poisoning—headaches, darkening vision, and severe anxiety. Even a quarter of a pill caused some symptoms. Activated charcoal was helpful in alleviating these effects. I was hopeful for this product, but it didn’t work out for me.

Monitor selenium levels

A significant selenium deficiency may occur if the soil has low levels of this element or if the digestive function is impaired. This medication works well for severe selenium deficiency, but caution is advised to avoid overdose. I recommend testing selenium levels before and after use, as it’s possible to take too much. I use selenium alongside vitamins D3 and C to support my immune system. The bottle is conveniently designed to avoid losing the lid, which I appreciate.
