We conducted a controlled study to see how selenium and other micronutrients might help prevent tuberculosis (TB) in people living with HIV in Botswana. Our trial included 878 HIV-positive participants who were not yet on antiretroviral treatment.

We found that supplementing with selenium, either alone or alongside multivitamins, significantly reduced the risk of developing TB compared to those taking a placebo. However, multivitamins on their own did not have the same protective effect.

These findings suggest that selenium supplementation could be an important strategy in tackling TB in HIV-infected individuals, particularly where malnutrition is an issue.
