Vitamin D2 linked to hair lossSerum ferritin and vitamin d in female hair loss: do they play a role?
We aimed to explore the relationship between vitamin D2 levels and hair loss in women suffering from chronic telogen effluvium (TE) or female pattern hair loss (FPHL). To do this, we included 80 women aged between 18 and 45 years with hair loss and compared them to 40 age-matched women without hair loss. Through clinical examinations and specific diagnostic techniques, we measured the serum ferritin and vitamin D2 levels of all participants.
Our findings revealed that women with TE had significantly lower serum ferritin levels (14.7 μg/l) and vitamin D2 levels (28.8 nmol/l) compared to the control group, which had levels of 43.5 μg/l and 118.2 nmol/l, respectively. Similar trends were observed in women with FPHL, indicating a clear association between low vitamin D2 levels and hair loss in both conditions. We also noted that these vitamin D2 levels decreased with the severity of the disease.
Although we established a correlation between low vitamin D2 and hair loss, it's important to mention that our study was mainly observational. We do believe that screening for these vitamin levels in women experiencing hair loss and considering supplementation when levels are low could play a role in their treatment. However, the isolated effect of vitamin D2 on hair loss is still unclear, and further intervention-based research would be needed to validate its therapeutic potential.
