same active ingredient as Prilosec OTC; competitively priced
Being a physician, over the years I have written many prescriptions for Omeprazole. It has long since gone generic, and its usage has probably gone up by many people. This Primary Health Acid Reducer has the same active ingredient as branded Prilosec and generic Omeprazole. It is neither better or worse than those other products, so price is the real consideration for products like this. It is currently priced on Amazon for approximately what one might pay for similar medication and quantity at Sam's Club and seems to be a good value. The main thing people need to know about products like this is that being available without a prescription does not make it benign. For example, long term usage of Omeprazole has been linked with deficiencies in Vitamin B12, calcium, and magnesium. It may cause loss of bone density and increase the risk for pneumonia. It's also important to understand when usage of Omeprazole is appropriate. Since it can take several days for Omeprazole to have maximal effect it is not a good choice of treatment for acute heartburn. Where it is most effective is when it is taken on a daily basis to control heartburn that is not controllable by other means such as changes in diet, losing weight, or usage of less powerful medication like Zantac or Pepcid. It is also commonly used to help prevent stomach ulcers for people who take anti-inflammatory pain medications on a chronic basis. All of that being said, this Primary Health Acid Reducer is an effective medication for treatment of chronic heartburn and/or gastritis and prevention of stomach ulceers. It is comparable in cost to generic Omeprazole. But just as it advises on the package, check with your doctor to see if using this medication on a chronic basis is appropriate for you
