Bought these to put dog's pain pills in them when she refused to take them any other way
Our 14 yr old dog has arthritis in both hips and takes Tramadol for pain relief. Tramadol is a human pain medication, in tablet form, commonly used for arthritic dogs when they're at the point where nothing else provides adequate relief. The medication is quite effective but the tablets have a very bitter taste. Once she got that taste, she would no longer take them, no matter what I did. I tried burying the tablets in her food, stuffing them into every form of yummy treat, putting them into Greenies Pill Pockets, forcing her to swallow them, everything I could think of, but, eventually, nothing worked, and I could no longer get them into her, resulting in obvious pain with no relief. The vet switched medications several times, looking for something she would take that would provide pain relief, but nothing really did the job or I'd have to give her so much that she'd sleep all day. We were at the point of being forced to put her down if we couldn't find a medication that would give her quality of life. One night, it dawned on me that I could empty another capsuled pill and put the Tramadol tablet into the empty capsule, then wondered if one could buy empty capsules. I jumped out of bed and onto the computer, over to Amazon, and easily found them, in different sizes, various quantities, at reasonable prices. I was unsure of which size I should get, settled on Size 1, and paid $10.99 (free shipping) for 1000 capsules (the only quantity available in that size at the time). IT WORKED! Now, when I get a new bottle of Tramadol tablets from the veterinary clinic, I sit down with them and the capsules and put one tablet into each capsule, being careful not to handle the capsules with the same hand I use to handle the Tramadol tablets. (Sadie has an extraordinary sense of smell and can quickly detect the dreaded Tramadol tablets so I have to be careful when handling.) I store the filled Tramadol capsules in a bottle until I use them, then stuff each filled capsule into a pill pocket, and put the stuffed pill pocket into her food. (She's a large German Short Hair, 80 lbs, and takes 2 tablets three times a day.) We've been doing this for a couple months now with no problems......no resistance, no forcing and no stress for either of us. I am SO thankful for these capsules. They literally saved our dog's life, enabling us to keep her comfortable and have her with us a little while longer, however long we're able to provide her a life with more joy than sorrow
