We explored the effects of pyridoxine, commonly known as vitamin B6, in a cell model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to understand how pyridoxine works and whether it can help combat the challenges associated with AD.
Using various techniques, including MTT assays, western blotting, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) assays, we observed how pyridoxine can offer protection against AD. The findings showed that vitamin B6 seems to lower ROS levels, which are often elevated in the context of Alzheimer’s. Additionally, it appeared to decrease the presence of cytoplasmic Nrf2 while increasing whole-cell HO-1 expression.
Overall, we suggest that the benefits of pyridoxine in Alzheimer's cases may stem from its ability to act as an antioxidant, particularly by stimulating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. This suggests that vitamin B6 could potentially be a useful ally in addressing the oxidative stress associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
