Biotin restores hair growth post-deficiency
We encountered a case of a woman suffering from short bowel syndrome, who faced significant hair loss due to biotin deficiency while on home parenteral nutrition. After starting oral biotin supplementation of 10 mg/day for three weeks, we observed that her serum biotin levels increased, leading to noticeable new hair growth and resolution of other symptoms. Further intravenous biotin treatment maintained her on multivitamins that include biotin, preventing any future deficiency symptoms. This case highlights the importance of addressing biotin levels for hair health and overall well-being.

We explored the effects of biotin treatment on hair loss through a case study of a girl diagnosed with biotinidase deficiency. Despite having no notable family history of the condition, her symptoms included problematic dermatitis, yellow hair, and alopecia.

After identifying low levels of biotinase and significant metabolic increases, the girl was found to have two specific mutations in her BTD gene linked to this deficiency. Following the diagnosis, we observed a clear response to biotin supplementation, with an initial dosage of 20 mg per day.

Remarkably, her dermatitis improved within a month, and her hair color returned to normal after three months of treatment. These findings suggest that biotin replacement therapy can have significant positive outcomes in cases related to biotinidase deficiency, connecting biotin to effective hair restoration.

We aimed to understand how retinoic acid (RA), a derivative of vitamin A, impacts hair loss, particularly in individuals suffering from androgenetic alopecia (AGA). By examining hair follicles from both the occipital and frontal areas of the scalp, we were able to conduct RNA sequencing to observe patterns relevant to HFSC (hair follicle stem cell) health.

In our experiments, we utilized a mouse model to see how administering RA affects hair growth during the telogen phase, a resting period for hair follicles. We then subjected miniaturized hair follicles to RA treatment in controlled organ cultures to assess hair shaft elongation and the activity of HFSCs.

The results revealed that RA signaling appeared to be diminished during AGA, leading to dysfunction in HFSCs. When we treated hair follicles with RA, we observed a notable recovery in hair regeneration. This treatment seemed to promote hair growth by activating HFSCs through Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways, facilitating their transition from a quiescent to an active state.

Additionally, a clinical part of the study confirmed that RA may hold promise as an early intervention tactic in AGA, reinforcing its role in reviving hair follicle activity. Overall, our findings suggested that vitamin A can be a game-changer in addressing hair loss by effectively reactivating stem cells in hair follicles.

Biotin serum shows promising results
We investigated the effectiveness of the Dr. SKS Hair Booster Serum, which contains biotin and other micronutrients, for treating androgenetic alopecia in both men and women. This open-label study included 1,000 participants across multiple clinics in India who received the serum through mesotherapy or derma roller techniques for six months.

During the study, we closely monitored various indicators of hair health, including the amount of hair loss, hair growth rates, and overall hair density changes. Our findings revealed a significant reduction in hair fall and a notable improvement in hair density after treatment. Interestingly, 95% of participants reported satisfaction with the results after six months.

Alopecia areata improvement with tofacitinib
We explored the effectiveness of tofacitinib, a treatment showing promise for alopecia areata (AA), particularly in cases that have proven resistant to other therapies. In one instance, a young adult male with resistant AA had not responded to treatments like oral and topical steroids, minoxidil, and oral troxasalen.

In this study, he received tofacitinib at a dose of 5 mg twice a day along with a biotin supplement. Remarkably, hair regrowth was noted just one month into the treatment, and by the three-month mark, over 90% of his hair had regrown. It’s worth mentioning that no side effects were recorded during the treatment period.

Our findings suggest that while biotin was administered alongside tofacitinib, its specific contributions to hair regrowth outcomes cannot be distinctly isolated. Thus, further research would be necessary to clarify the role of biotin in hair loss treatments.

Zinc-enhanced hair growth treatment
We designed a microneedle patch that contains zinc and curcumin, aiming to assess how these ingredients work together to promote hair growth. In our study, we utilized two different animal models to examine the effectiveness of this patch. One model represented androgenic alopecia (AGA), and the other focused on wound healing.

By delivering bioactive zinc particles directly into the skin, we explored how this method could enhance hair regrowth. Our findings showed that the zinc-curcumin combination significantly improved the viability of certain skin cells and countered the negative effects of common hair loss factors, like excess reactive oxygen species and dihydrotestosterone.

Most strikingly, the treatment not only encouraged hair regrowth in the AGA model but also facilitated wound healing. We noted an increase in hair follicles and better cell proliferation, which points to zinc's potential role in supporting both hair health and skin recovery. Overall, our research suggests a promising direction in the use of zinc for addressing hair loss and skin healing more effectively than traditional methods alone.
