Dr. David Carmena is a Senior Researcher based at the Parasitology Reference and Research Laboratory of the Spanish National Center for Microbiology. He was awarded a Miguel Servet Fellowship of the Health Institute Carlos III, Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness in May 2013. Since 2018, David is a recipient of a Distinguished Researcher position at the same institution. His research focuses on zoonotic diseases caused by protist and helminth species, with a particular interest in diagnosis, epidemiology, transmission dynamics, zoonotic potential, and economic losses caused by these pathogens. David received his Ph.D. in Parasitology from the University of the Basque Country (Spain) in 2001 and completed his first postdoc at Imperial College London, UK (2002-04). He then joined the Medical Research Council Clinical Sciences Centre, Imperial College London, UK, where he was involved in research projects related to protein kinases' role in metabolic pathways.
