Prof. Antonio Speciale is Associate Professor of Pharmacology (SSD BIO/14) at the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, Università degli Studi di Messina, Italy. He received a degree in Chimica e Tecnologie Farmaceutiche from the University of Messina in 2004. Dr. Antonio Speciale obtained a Ph.D. in Toxicology at the University of Messina in 2009, and completed his training in the Pharmacogenetics Working Group at Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA, USA). Dr. Antonio Speciale received a degree as Specialist in Pharmacognosy from the University of Messina in 2013.
Dr. Speciale teaches the course of Pharmacovigilance and Pharmacoeconomics - Chemotherapy and Immunopharmacology in the Master degree in Pharmacy, the course of Pharmacognosy in the Master degree in Chimica e Tecnologie Farmaceutiche, and the course of Evidence-Based Pharmacotherapy in the Specialization School in Hospital Pharmacy at the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, Università degli Studi di Messina, Italy. He is the author of more than 80 publications (research articles, book chapters, and reviews) and more than 100 conference presentations.
His research interests are mainly focused on elucidating the mode-of-action of bioactive compounds using in vitro cellular models. In particular, his research focuses on natural products and their capacity to modulate cellular adaptive response pathways, such as the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway and NF-κB pathway, and in the discovery of natural products-based anticancer agents.
As of December 2024, according to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), he has 84 papers (86 in Scopus database), has been cited 2386 times (2627 in Scopus database, 4205 in Google Scholar), 1863 times without self-citations (2340 in Scopus database), with an Average Citation per Year of 132.6, an Average Citation per Item of 28.4, and an H-index of 30 (30 in Scopus database, 37 in Google Scholar with an i10-index of 64), with a Total Impact Factor of 285.3
