We explored the effectiveness of a powder containing 2% undecylenic acid and 20% zinc undecylenate for treating athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis. In a double-blind study, 151 participants were assigned to apply either the active powder or a placebo twice daily for four weeks. The results were telling.

From the 85 patients with confirmed fungal infections, a remarkable 88% of those using the active powder had negative cultures after the treatment, compared to only 17% in the placebo group. Additionally, 80% of those on the active treatment were found to be free of fungus in KOH skin scrapings after four weeks, while only 49% of placebo users achieved this. We investigated the effectiveness of zinc sulphate in treating acute bronchiolitis in children, aiming to uncover whether this supplement could help speed recovery. In our study, we closely examined 100 young patients diagnosed with the condition. Half of the children received oral zinc sulphate while the other half received a placebo.

Over the course of the treatment, we compared the clinical signs and symptoms between the two groups at several intervals: 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours after starting. Encouragingly, we observed that those in the zinc group showed a more favorable trend in recovery compared to the placebo group across all time points. Notably, significant differences were noted in improvements of coughing and wheezing at the 48 and 72-hour marks.

Remarkably, we found that 98% of the children who received zinc sulphate achieved full recovery within 72 hours of treatment—indicating a rapid response to the therapy. Our findings suggest that zinc sulphate can notably accelerate the improvement of clinical symptoms in acute bronchiolitis. Therefore, we feel confident recommending zinc sulphate as a helpful treatment option for this condition.

We set out to investigate how zinc might help protect heart cells from damage caused by a lack of blood flow, known as myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI). Using H9C2 cells, which are derived from rat heart tissue, we simulated this injury by depriving these cells of oxygen and then reintroducing it while treating them with zinc.

Through this process, we found that zinc treatment significantly increased cell viability compared to those that did not receive zinc. Cells exposed to ischemia showed typical signs of trauma, like heightened levels of apoptosis—or programmed cell death—and calcium overload, which can further damage cells.

Interestingly, zinc seemed to tackle these issues by lowering the levels of certain proteins related to cell death. It also played a role in regulating calcium levels by interacting with various cellular pathways. In fact, when we silenced specific proteins involved in these pathways, the protective benefits of zinc were even more pronounced.

Our findings suggest that zinc can relieve the harmful effects of ischemia by mitigating cell death and regulating calcium overload, which offers hope for future treatments for heart-related conditions impacted by blood flow interruptions.

We conducted a pilot trial to explore the effectiveness of zinc acetate in treating chronic refractory cough, a condition that causes significant discomfort for many people. We explored the potential connection between dietary zinc intake and the risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) through a large-scale analysis of participants from the UK Biobank. By assessing the dietary habits of 175,421 individuals who did not have IBS at the start of the study, we sought to understand how various levels of zinc, as well as copper and their ratio, might influence the onset of this troublesome condition.

Over an average follow-up period of 13.3 years, we observed that 2,240 participants were diagnosed with new-onset IBS. Notably, our findings revealed a U-shaped relationship between zinc intake and IBS incidence. For those consuming less than 10 mg of zinc per day, an increase in intake was linked to a decreased risk of IBS. Specifically, individuals taking less than 10 mg of zinc daily experienced a reduced risk with higher zinc consumption.

However, the relationship shifted for individuals who had higher intakes of copper and zinc; no significant benefits were noted when intakes reached or exceeded established thresholds. This suggests that there's a delicate balance to maintain when it comes to zinc and copper in the diet.

Importantly, subgroup analysis indicated that younger individuals, particularly those under 60, could benefit more from slight increases in zinc. Overall, our study highlights the significance of dietary management, emphasizing that reasonable zinc intake may contribute to lowering IBS risk while keeping copper and the copper/zinc ratio in a sensible range.

We investigated how intranasal zinc (Zn) treatment affects symptoms of allergic rhinitis (AR), specifically focusing on individuals suffering from Japanese cedar pollinosis (JCP), a common seasonal allergy.
