Folate supplementation improves anemia
Effect of School-Based Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation Program on the Serum Folate Status of Adolescent Girls in Sidama Region, Southern Ethiopia: Comparative Cross-Sectional Study.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a study to understand how a school-based program offering weekly iron and folic acid supplements affects anemia, particularly focusing on the serum folate levels in adolescent girls aged 10 to 19 in the Sidama Region of Southern Ethiopia.

Our research compared 165 girls from schools participating in the supplementation program to 165 girls from schools without this initiative. We measured the serum folate levels, alongside hemoglobin concentrations, to get a clearer picture of the program's effectiveness.

The results were promising. We observed that the girls receiving the supplements had a significantly higher mean serum folate concentration of 9.76 ng/mL compared to 7.38 ng/mL in those who did not receive the supplementation. Additionally, the hemoglobin levels were higher in the supplemented group, suggesting a positive effect on overall health.

This highlights the importance of the WIFAS program not just for iron levels but also for folate status, indicating a crucial step in tackling anemia in vulnerable populations. We are optimistic that this evidence can help advocate for the program's expansion in areas facing deficiencies in both iron and folate.

Folic acid impacts blood clotting
Folic acid targets splenic extramedullary hemopoiesis to attenuate carbon black-induced coagulation-thrombosis potential.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated how folic acid affects blood clotting, particularly when exposed to carbon black (CB), a common industrial substance. In our study with adult C57BL/6 mice, we found that prolonged exposure to CB led to increased blood clotting potential due to changes in the spleen, where extra blood cell production occurs.

Notably, we observed that CB exposure caused an increase in certain cells responsible for blood clotting, while decreasing folic acid levels in the bloodstream. This drop in folic acid seemed to correlate with heightened levels of prostaglandin E2, a compound that can drive inflammation and increase blood clotting.

When we supplemented the mice with folic acid, we noted a reduction in the negative effects of CB on blood clotting. This protective effect appeared to stem from folic acid's ability to inhibit the enzymes involved in the excessive production of prostaglandins by splenic macrophages. Overall, our findings suggest that folic acid supplementation could be a valuable strategy to mitigate the heightened risk of thrombosis associated with carbon black exposure.

Salvation when planning pregnancy with a gene mutation!! In preparation for pregnancy, I underwent "complete" tests and was horrified to discover I have a gene mutation affecting my body's ability to process ordinary folic acid. Consequently, my homocysteine levels were high, increasing the risk of fetal mutations. This folate is a lifesaver for people like me!!! Following my gynaecologist's instructions, I took it alongside vitamin B12 during pregnancy, successfully lowering my homocysteine and maintaining it at the required level through blood monitoring. Everything went brilliantly! A wonderful baby is growing up, and I experienced no side effects or discomfort. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Nutrient supplements and nausea study
Prevalence of morbidity symptoms among pregnant and postpartum women receiving different nutrient supplements in Ghana and Malawi: A secondary outcome analysis of two randomised controlled trials.
Most Relevant Research
We observed the effects of various nutrient supplements, including folate, on nausea in pregnant and postpartum women in Ghana and Malawi. Participants in our study were given different types of supplements, with some receiving iron and folic acid, while others received multiple micronutrients or small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements.

Throughout the study, which followed the women from early pregnancy to six months postpartum, we monitored symptoms like nausea and vomiting among the groups. Interestingly, we found that the overall prevalence of vomiting was lower in the group receiving lipid-based nutrient supplements compared to those taking multiple micronutrients. However, the mean number of days women experienced nausea was higher in those taking lipid-based nutrients and multiple micronutrients compared to the iron and folic acid group.

Importantly, while we gained insights into how nutrition affects maternal health, we did not find strong evidence that the type of nutrient supplements consistently influenced nausea during pregnancy or the postpartum period. This suggests that folate’s effects on nausea may not be significant in isolation or within the context of the supplements studied.

Folic acid alleviates pain-induced anxiety
Long-term folic acid treatment relieves chronic inflammatory pain and pain-induced anxiety by reducing MMP2 expression in rats.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated the potential effects of folic acid on anxiety arising from chronic inflammatory pain. Using a group of adult rats, we induced inflammatory pain by injecting them with complete Freund's adjuvant into their hindpaw. Pain levels and behaviors were measured through paw withdrawal tests to monitor mechanical and thermal sensitivity.

Our findings revealed that the rats experienced heightened pain levels, correlating with increased expression of Matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2) in certain nerve regions. Most importantly, we discovered that long-term treatment with folic acid not only lowered MMP2 levels but also provided significant relief from the chronic pain. Additionally, this treatment helped reduce anxiety related to pain, showing that folic acid could play a protective role in managing both chronic inflammatory pain and the anxiety that often accompanies it.

The results suggest that folic acid could be a valuable therapeutic option for tackling both pain and the psychological distress that can follow chronic inflammation. This dual benefit opens the door for further exploration of folic acid in pain management strategies.

PANS/PANDAS and folate treatment
Folate Receptor Alpha Autoantibodies in the Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) Population.
Most Relevant Research
We aimed to understand how folate receptor alpha autoantibodies (FRAAs) relate to symptoms in children diagnosed with Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS). We analyzed serum samples from 47 children, aged 6 to 18, who carried these diagnoses.

Our results showed that a significant number of these children—about 63.8%—had binding or blocking FRAAs. Additionally, certain symptoms, like severe tics, linked with higher FRAA binding titers. Notably, we observed that kids with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) had lower binding titers of FRAAs.

A remarkable case highlighted how treatment with leucovorin, a form of folate, resulted in symptom improvements in a child with PANS/PANDAS who tested positive for FRAAs. These findings suggest that abnormalities in folate metabolism could play a role in the symptomatology of PANS/PANDAS, presenting the potential for folate-based therapies to be a viable treatment option.

Overall, this study sheds light on the connection between folate-related factors and pediatric neuropsychiatric disorders, calling for further research into leucovorin as a targeted treatment.

Folate-enhanced nanoparticle effectiveness
Cell membrane-inspired chitosan nanoparticles for prolonged circulation and tumor-targeted drug delivery.
Most Relevant Research
We explored innovative ways to improve cancer treatment by using folate-targeted nanoparticles. The study focused on the development of chitosan nanoparticles that mimic cell membranes, enhancing their ability to evade the immune system and prolong circulation in the body. By integrating folate, a nutrient known to target cancer cells, we hoped to increase the effectiveness of drug delivery directly to tumors.

Our findings revealed that these folate-targeted nanoparticles showed a remarkable capacity to be absorbed by breast cancer cells, specifically increasing uptake efficiency by five to six times compared to nanoparticles without folate. This was a significant boost, showcasing the potential of using folate as a guiding factor for cancer treatment.

Furthermore, the study demonstrated that these nanoparticles remained in the bloodstream for much longer, with their half-life extended from roughly 2.7 hours to nearly 13 hours. This means they can circulate longer and potentially reach tumors more effectively.

Ultimately, our research aims to pave the way for more efficient cancer therapies, highlighting how leveraging folate in nanoparticle design may provide a promising strategy in the fight against cancer.

Folate may protect against OSA
The relation of dietary components with severity of obstructive sleep apnea in Cypriot patients: A randomized, stratified epidemiological study.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a thorough investigation into how dietary components, particularly folate, relate to the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in a group of adults living in Cyprus. Our study included a diverse sample of 303 participants aged over 18, who completed detailed food frequency and physical activity questionnaires, along with undergoing sleep studies to assess OSA severity.

In our analysis, we found that patients with more severe OSA, identified by a higher apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), had significant characteristics such as increased body mass index (BMI) and higher caloric intake. Interestingly, those with moderate to severe OSA reported higher folic acid consumption compared to those with milder forms of the condition.

This suggests that while greater energy intake appears to correlate with more severe OSA, a higher intake of folate may offer some protective benefits. However, it’s essential to note that we did not isolate the effects of folate alone, as other dietary factors were also at play in our findings, making further research necessary to draw stronger conclusions.

Overall, our results point towards the complexity of dietary influences on sleep apnea severity, highlighting folate as a potentially beneficial nutrient alongside other lifestyle factors.

Folate's potential in heart health
Atherogenic Effect of Homocysteine, a Biomarker of Inflammation and Its Treatment.
Most Relevant Research
We have explored how folate, a vital B-vitamin, may play a crucial role in lowering homocysteine levels, which is linked to heightened risks of cardiovascular diseases. The study highlights how high levels of homocysteine can contribute to atherosclerosis, a silent but dangerous condition leading to heart disease and stroke.

Our findings suggest that by increasing folate intake, either through supplements or dietary sources, we can effectively reduce homocysteine levels. This, in turn, might decrease the risk of developing related cardiovascular issues. Observations indicate that folate, along with other B-vitamins, can positively influence heart health and protect against the attack of atherosclerosis.

However, it’s worth noting that while folate is a significant player in this context, the exact impact can vary depending on individual health conditions and existing dietary habits. Therefore, a well-rounded approach to nutrition, including other vitamins and lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking and reducing alcohol intake, complements the benefits of folate for cardiovascular health.

A wonderful tool! Fifty per cent of the population have mutations in the folate cycle, leading to poor absorption of folic acid, essential for both adults and children. Aside from its well-known benefits for mothers and children, it significantly reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack, and frozen pregnancy. The body requires not folic acid itself, but its active form, metafolin. When taking folic acid, the body works hard to convert it into metafolin, but with Solgar's metafolin, this effort is unnecessary. After experiencing an increase in homocysteine to 33, I started taking 800 mcg of metafolin. The situation improved significantly, dropping homocysteine to 6.74, as I reduced my intake from four tablets a day to just one.

Folic acid shows cardioprotective effects
Effect of folic acid on isoprenaline-induced myocardial injury in rats.
Most Relevant Research
We aimed to understand how folic acid (FA) might help protect the heart during instances of myocardial injury, specifically when induced by isoprenaline, a substance known to trigger such damage in experimental settings with rats. Our study involved administering FA to a group of adult male Wistar albino rats over a week, alongside inducing myocardial injury on the final days of the treatment.

The results of our study were promising; we found that FA pretreatment significantly softened the adverse effects typically caused by isoprenaline. Important markers that indicate heart damage, like homocysteine and high-sensitivity troponin I levels, were reduced after FA treatment. Additionally, levels of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) were lowered, and the benefits extended to enhanced antioxidant activities in the rat hearts.

Overall, our findings suggest that folic acid may serve as a gentle but effective cardioprotective agent in this model of myocardial injury. It’s encouraging to see that simple nutritional supplementation could have such a positive impact on heart health, particularly in scenarios mimicking heart attacks. This opens up exciting possibilities for future research in cardioprotection and dietary interventions for heart health.

Folate treatment aids liver fat reduction
DNA hypermethylation-induced suppression of ALKBH5 is required for folic acid to alleviate hepatic lipid deposition by enhancing autophagy in an ATG12-dependent manner.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated the effects of folic acid treatment on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition where excess fat builds up in the liver, often linked to obesity and insulin resistance. Our research revealed that giving folic acid to mice on a high-fat diet helped improve their glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, alongside reducing unhealthy fat levels in their liver cells.

By diving into the mechanisms, we discovered that folic acid works by changing the DNA methylation patterns that regulate the expression of a protein called ALKBH5. This reduction in ALKBH5 levels led to an increase in a specific type of RNA modification and subsequently boosted the production of a protein called ATG12, which is vital for autophagy – the process that cleans up and recycles cellular components.

When we inhibited ATG12 through overexpression of ALKBH5, autophagy was impeded, showcasing how crucial ATG12 is for allowing folic acid to effectively reduce fat accumulation in the liver. Overall, these findings indicate that folic acid could be a promising nutritional ally in fighting NAFLD, revealing a clear mechanism by which it protects liver health.

Folinic acid improves CFS symptoms
Clinical activity of folinic acid in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.
Most Relevant Research
We aimed to explore the effects of folinic acid, also known as leucovorin, on patients suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Our investigation revealed some fascinating findings about this often misunderstood condition, particularly the links to immune response and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection.

In our evaluation of 58 CFS patients, we discovered that nearly all had previously been exposed to EBV, with a striking 72% showing signs of active reactivation. Additionally, an overwhelming 94% were found to have a severe B-cell immunodeficiency, evidenced by a marked reduction in their CD19+IgM+ mature B-lymphocyte population.

What stood out was that after treatment with folinic acid, an impressive 81% of the participants reported experiencing a noticeable improvement in their symptoms. This suggests that folinic acid might play a significant role in the management of CFS, particularly for those struggling with related immune deficiencies and EBV responses.

Our findings bring new insights into CFS, indicating that it may be a condition responding well to folinic acid treatment. This opens up exciting avenues for further research into effective therapies for those affected by this challenging syndrome.

Folic acid reduces CHD risk
Association of maternal folic acid supplementation and offspring MTRR gene polymorphism with congenital heart disease: a hospital-based case-control study in Han population.
Most Relevant Research
We conducted a case-control study to look into how maternal folic acid supplementation affects the risk of congenital heart disease (CHD) in children and whether genetic factors, specifically MTRR gene polymorphisms, play a role in this relationship.

Our research involved 595 children diagnosed with CHD and 605 healthy children. By using a multivariate logistic regression model, we were able to assess the impact of maternal folate intake and the offspring's genetic profiles on the likelihood of developing CHD and its various subtypes.

The findings were quite striking. We observed that children whose mothers took folic acid during pregnancy showed a significantly reduced risk of CHD. Specifically, this included notable reductions in certain types of heart defects such as atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect. Interestingly, specific polymorphisms in the MTRR gene were also linked to an increased risk of CHD.

Most importantly, we found that when mothers supplemented with folic acid, it appeared to mitigate some of the risks associated with genetic variants in their children. However, we recognize the need for additional studies with larger populations and different designs to confirm these important findings.
