Niacin aids in leukemia treatmentRapamycin and Niacin combination induces apoptosis and cell cycle arrest through autophagy activation on acute myeloid leukemia cells.
Most Relevant Research
We investigated how the combination of Niacin and Rapamycin affects the growth of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. By conducting a series of experiments on two AML cell lines, THP-1 and NB4, we aimed to see if this duo could meaningfully target cancer cells.
Our findings showed that when used together, Rapamycin and Niacin significantly lowered the viability of the leukemia cells. Specifically, we observed notable increases in cell death, with THP-1 cells experiencing nearly five times more apoptosis, and NB4 cells showing a 7.3-fold increase. The combination treatment also caused a distinct halt in the cell cycle, meaning the cancer cells were not able to continue growing.
Additionally, we noted changes in various proteins linked to autophagy, a process that can help cells maintain balance. While there’s much to be understood, our results suggest that this combination of Niacin and Rapamycin may enhance the fight against AML by promoting cell death and disrupting the cell cycle.
Ultimately, this study highlights the potential of using a natural product like Niacin in a blend with traditional treatments like Rapamycin to combat cancer. However, further research is needed to fully understand the implications of these findings.
