Zinc reduces diarrhea, colds in infants
We investigated the impact of daily multivitamin and zinc supplementation on the health of Tanzanian infants. In our randomized, double-blind study involving 2,400 infants, we compared the effects of these supplements against a placebo over 18 months.

Our findings revealed that while zinc significantly reduced occurrences of diarrhea and acute respiratory infections, multivitamins did not provide additional benefits. Ultimately, zinc supplementation starting at 6 weeks may be beneficial for reducing some common illnesses in infants, but multivitamins did not show any significant positive impact.

This is the best cost-effective and most effective vitamin B supplement I've ever encountered. It combines ingredients that are uncommon in Japan, and it outperforms energy drinks sold in drugstores that are less than 500 yen. It makes me feel better, and when I take potassium the day after overindulging, I don't experience swelling at all, allowing me to wake up feeling normal.

Turmeric Curcumin

Curcumin reduces cold symptoms
We embarked on an engaging investigation into how highly bioavailable curcumin, a key component of turmeric, affects common cold symptoms. Our study spanned 12 weeks, involving 99 healthy Japanese adults who were randomly divided into three groups. Two groups received different formulations of curcumin while the third group was given a placebo.

Each participant took four capsules daily, and we measured the cumulative days participants experienced cold symptoms. Interestingly, we discovered that those taking either curcumin formulation reported significantly fewer days with cold symptoms compared to the placebo group.

Additionally, we monitored various immune function markers, inflammatory parameters, and overall safety throughout the study. Notably, we observed no adverse effects from curcumin supplementation, making it a promising option for those looking to mitigate cold symptoms naturally.

Turmeric is incredibly beneficial, especially when paired with black pepper and ginger! This jar lasts four months! Though the capsules are large, I have no trouble swallowing them, and they have a mild taste. When I sensed a cold, I took a double dose along with honey and propolis and didn't fall ill. Turmeric is indeed powerful!

Iron

We explored whether home fortification of foods with multiple micronutrient powders (MNPs) impacts nutrition and health in children under two years. Analyzing 29 studies, we discovered that using MNPs significantly lowered anaemia rates by 18% and iron deficiency by 53%. Moreover, MNPs improved haemoglobin levels compared to no intervention. However, there was no notable influence on weight. While the intervention showed promise for anaemia, its direct effects on other health areas remain unclear, indicating a need for more research in this area.

I cannot live without this! During childbirth, I suffered from a common cold, sore throat, and fever monthly. Despite numerous visits to the ENT department, I was desperate for relief. After learning I might be low in iron and zinc, I switched to Now Foods, which contains significantly more iron than others I'd tried. Initially, the smell made me gag, but I got used to it. I recommend purchasing from iHerb or Rakuten for better prices.

Vitamin D helps reduce cold symptoms
We conducted an insightful analysis to see how 25-hydroxyvitamin D, often referred to as 25OHD, impacts symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, commonly known as colds. In this randomized, placebo-controlled study, participants with insufficient or deficient levels of vitamin D were given either a daily dose of 10 µg of 25OHD or a placebo over a period of 16 weeks. This setup allowed us to objectively compare the effects of vitamin D treatment.

Our findings were quite telling. We observed that those receiving 25OHD had significantly lower scores for physical symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and head congestion compared to the placebo group. Additionally, quality of life scores improved across the board for the vitamin D group, with the exception of one aspect—breathing easily.

However, it's important to note that while 25OHD intake seemed to alleviate some symptoms, there was no significant difference in the overall number of cold episodes experienced or the usage of medications like antibiotics and pain relievers. This suggests that while 25-hydroxyvitamin D can help reduce certain nasal symptoms and improve quality of life, it may not prevent colds or decrease their frequency.

The taste of the gummy bears is sweet and quite dense; my child enjoys them, and they're a fantastic healthy treat. The price is also appealing, as similar products in pharmacies cost significantly more. The most important aspect is their effectiveness—our household has not had any common colds this winter!

Probiotics

We examined the effectiveness of EpiCor, a yeast-derived postbiotic, on cold and flu symptoms in children. In a randomized controlled trial involving 256 kids aged 4-12, we compared those receiving EpiCor with a placebo for 84 days during flu season.

Results showed that children taking EpiCor experienced less severe cold and flu symptoms and used fewer medications than those on the placebo. This suggests that EpiCor can enhance immune function safely, providing a helpful option for managing colds in children.

I initially used this for an anti-candida protocol, but had to administer it early. My child suffered from terrible intestinal discomfort. However, after introducing Saccharomyces on the tenth day, the rumbling stopped, and he seemed calmer. The capsules are large and difficult for a child to swallow, but I diluted them in cold water and used a syringe. Thankfully, everything seems to be fine.

Elderberry Sambucus

We investigated how vitamin C affects the common cold, focusing on its potential for prevention and treatment. Research indicates that while vitamin C does not prevent colds in the general population when taken at doses over 1 g/day, it has been beneficial for individuals engaging in heavy physical activity, effectively halving their incidence of colds.

Looking into regular supplementation, we found that taking 1 g or more daily can reduce the severity of colds by about 15%. However, when it comes to starting vitamin C after cold symptoms begin, results are less consistent, though higher doses of 6-8 g/day did significantly shorten the duration of colds compared to lower doses.

Interestingly, historical studies showed that vitamin C might prevent pneumonia in specific populations, such as schoolboys or soldiers, but this doesn’t translate to the general public. While some trials indicated potential benefits for pneumonia patients, the evidence is not conclusive.

Overall, we see that given the evidence supporting reduced severity and duration of colds, along with its safety and affordability, it may be worth considering a higher dose of vitamin C for those looking to manage cold symptoms better.

Excellent medication; undoubtedly the best from this brand. At the initial symptoms of a cold, the immune support is exceptional. I buy it for my children and have noticed the results. Their colds genuinely pass more swiftly and easily compared to other children in their class, especially when used alongside other treatments. It boasts a significant amount of antioxidants and vastly outperforms other herbal remedies against the influenza virus. Black elder offers diaphoretic, bactericidal, and anti-inflammatory benefits. It’s most effective on the first day, hence should be taken as soon as symptoms arise. This remedy quickly helps us recover from ARVI and flu.

Vitamin D

We explored the connection between vitamin D levels and the frequency of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) in physically active individuals throughout different seasons. In our research, we observed over 1,600 military recruits during their basic training, noting that only 21% were vitamin D sufficient during winter. Alarmingly, those who had sufficient vitamin D levels were found to be 40% less likely to experience URTIs compared to their deficient counterparts, suggesting that maintaining adequate vitamin D may be crucial for better respiratory health during demanding training periods.

Building on these findings, we conducted a follow-up study with 250 recruits, where we implemented various vitamin D supplementation strategies. Participants received either a placebo, simulated sunlight exposure, or oral vitamin D3 supplementation. The results were promising: vitamin D helped alleviate the severity of URTI symptoms and significantly reduced the number of days experiencing a cold. Notably, both sunlight and dietary supplementation were equally effective in boosting vitamin D levels and improving outcomes.

Overall, achieving vitamin D sufficiency can markedly reduce the burden of URTIs, particularly in physically demanding scenarios such as military training.

I have been taking omega-3 since the first trimester on my gynecologist's advice. I researched thoroughly and chose this expensive product due to its reliable certification and good dosage. It economically lasts three months as I take one capsule daily. The fish oil is sourced from wild fish, minimising heavy metal risks. There’s no unpleasant aftertaste or fishy belching, and it has notably improved my dry skin. It’s essential for brain and heart development, and I recommend it.

Iodine's mixed effects on colds
We investigated the role of iodine in preventing the common cold, specifically regarding its effectiveness against rhinovirus infections. Many of us have experienced the discomfort and disruption that comes from a cold, and we know how hard it can be to find effective remedies. Initial studies suggested that treating our hands with iodine could help prevent the spread of these pesky viruses.

Iodine has shown potential in reducing rhinovirus transmission. It's known that viral contamination on our hands plays a significant role in how colds spread from person to person. In fact, the use of iodine for hand treatment could disrupt this transmission chain effectively.

Although iodine's effects are promising, the specific details and methodologies of the studies were not deeply explored. Importantly, other organic acids like salicylic and pyroglutamic acid also demonstrated strong virucidal action against rhinoviruses. These findings hint at the potential for various treatments to help us fend off colds.

Overall, while iodine treatment shows some promise, the evidence isn't entirely conclusive, as further detailed studies would be beneficial for confirmation. It remains an engaging area for future research in our efforts to combat the common cold.

Micronutrient treatment reduces cold symptoms
We evaluated how a specific mix of vitamins and minerals, including selenium, influences recurrent colds in a group of 192 patients over 16 weeks. This randomized, placebo-controlled study showed that those receiving the micronutrient combination experienced a greater improvement in cold symptoms compared to the placebo group.

Notably, individuals below 45 reported fewer job absences due to colds. Overall, vitamin and mineral levels increased significantly for those on the treatment, suggesting that micronutrients may enhance immune defense and reduce the severity of common colds. However, the specific role of selenium in these improvements needs more exploration.

Dha

We conducted a double-blind randomized controlled trial to understand how prenatal supplementation of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) might influence infant health, particularly concerning the common cold. Pregnant women were given either a daily dose of 400 mg of DHA or a placebo starting at 18 to 22 weeks of gestation until childbirth.

Caregivers then reported on their infants’ health at 1, 3, and 6 months, sharing details about common illness symptoms. We found that DHA supplementation appeared to reduce the number of colds at one month and also seemed to lessen the duration of various cold symptoms in infants. Specifically, infants in the DHA group experienced fewer cold symptoms and had shorter durations of cough and wheezing.

While the overall occurrence of specific illness symptoms was similar between the DHA and placebo groups, DHA did bring about noteworthy benefits. At 1 month, infants in the DHA group had a 26% shorter duration of cough and 30% shorter wheezing; however, they experienced a longer duration of rash.

Furthermore, by the time the infants reached 3 months, those whose mothers took DHA were ill for 14% less time overall. At 6 months, the DHA group showed significantly reduced durations of several illness indicators, although they did experience longer episodes of vomiting.

This study suggests that prenatal DHA not only seems to impact the occurrence of colds in children but may also play a role in the duration of symptoms over the first half-year of life.

Folic Acid

8
Folate benefits in colds unclear
We explored the effectiveness of a special combination of micronutrients, including folate, in helping patients who suffer from recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, commonly known as colds. Our study involved 192 participants over 16 weeks in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial that allowed us to compare results objectively.

The findings indicate that patients who had vitamin D deficiency or were low in vitamin C experienced significant benefits when taking the micronutrient combination, and symptoms improved notably compared to those on a placebo. Specifically, individuals with multiple cold symptoms showed greater relief in the active group, with a significant reduction in symptom intensity.

While folate was part of the mix, the study did not isolate its specific impact on cold symptoms. Instead, it highlighted the effectiveness of the whole nutrient combination in reducing the frequency of colds and the intensity of symptoms. Overall, those who received the micronutrient supplement reported improved health outcomes compared to those who didn't.

Zinc

We explored how zinc supplementation might impact the prevention and treatment of the common cold. Through a thorough examination of 34 studies involving over 8,500 participants, we aimed to understand whether zinc could effectively reduce the occurrence or duration of colds.

The studies included randomized controlled trials comparing zinc to placebo in both children and adults. Our findings indicate that while zinc may not significantly lower the risk of catching a cold, it could help reduce the duration of an ongoing cold. However, this benefit comes alongside an increase in non-serious side effects, such as an unpleasant taste and stomach issues.

It's important to note that many of these studies showed a wide range of interventions and outcomes, and some reporting was incomplete. Overall, our results suggest that zinc does not hold substantial promise for preventing colds, but it may help shorten the duration of symptoms once a cold strikes.

Great Omega 3! I bought this Omega 3 specifically for my husband. The dosage is excellent in one capsule, lasting two months. He takes one capsule daily, alongside vitamin D3 with meals. He appreciates the ease of use and its effectiveness. Before taking Omega 3, he frequently caught a common cold and suffered from weakness. Since its regular intake began, he hasn't been ill all autumn nor now! He has noticed an increase in strength and energy! An excellent result! We will reorder.

Zinc Magnesium Aspartate

Lactobacillus

Lactobacillus shows immune benefits
We examined whether Lactobacillus crispatus strain KT-11 can boost immune function in healthy adults. In a pilot study involving 20 participants, half received KT-11 while the others received a placebo for four weeks.

We found that those who took KT-11 had higher counts of certain immune cells and reported fewer cold-like symptoms, especially fatigue. However, there was no significant change in SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels. Overall, KT-11 shows potential but requires further studies to confirm these benefits.

Vitamin A

We examined the role of vitamin A in helping children recover from upper respiratory infections.

In our case control study involving children aged 4-6, we found that those with respiratory infections had lower vitamin A levels compared to healthy kids.

Surprisingly, while vitamin A seems to support airway function during recovery, children with wheezing did not show the same benefits.

Overall, vitamin A appears vital for maintaining healthy respiratory function, especially when kids are fighting off infections.

This has been effective for preventing colds in the throat and nose. During the summer air-conditioning season and in the cold winter, I frequently suffered from pharyngitis and acute sinusitis. I learned this ingredient is great for strengthening mucous membranes, so I started taking it daily, and now I hardly ever catch a cold in my throat or nose!

Colostrum

7
Colostrum's impact on infant immunity
We examined how immune components in colostrum and mature human milk influence infant health, particularly regarding common colds and allergies. In a study involving 398 mothers across the UK, Russia, and Italy, we found that higher levels of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in milk might reduce common cold occurrences by one year of age.

However, while colostrum showed potential protective benefits against certain allergies, such as eczema, the overall benefits of colostrum on common cold were not significantly emphasized. Our findings suggest that the immune profile of human milk plays an essential role in early infant health, warranting further investigation.

Echinacea boosts cold immunity
We explored the effects of Echinacea purpurea, a popular herbal remedy, on our immune response to the common cold. The study employed advanced techniques to measure how a standardized extract of Echinacea affects THP-1 monocytes, a type of immune cell. Through transcriptome, epigenome, and kinome profiling, we identified significant immunomodulatory effects from the Echinacea treatment.

Our findings revealed that Echinacea stimulates antiviral pathways responsible for activating immune responses. This includes enhancing signaling from interferons, which act as messengers in our immune system, and boosting the activity of pattern recognition receptors, which help identify pathogens. We also observed changes in genes related to inflammation and the body's metabolic processes, indicating a comprehensive strengthening of our innate immunity.

Furthermore, Echinacea treatment was linked to increased DNA methylation at specific genomic sites. This may inhibit the expression of endogenous retroviral sequences, contributing to a protective evolutionary response to viral infections. Such changes suggest that Echinacea may not only help alleviate symptoms but could also reduce the duration of colds caused by various coronaviruses, including new variants like SARS-CoV-2.

Overall, we believe Echinacea purpurea shows promise as a supportive treatment for common colds, particularly in boosting our inherent antiviral defenses during infections.

Spirulina

7
Spirulina improves infant respiratory health
We explored the effects of spirulina supplementation on the health of Zambian infants. In a randomized trial, 501 infants were given either soya-maize porridge alone or the same porridge with spirulina for a year.

While physical growth was similar in both groups, those who received spirulina experienced a notable decrease in coughing and showed improved motor milestones, such as walking independently.

This suggests that spirulina can play a role in reducing respiratory issues and enhancing motor development in infants, making it a promising addition to complementary feeding.

Childrens Probiotics

We assessed the impact of a two-strain probiotic, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, on common cold symptoms in schoolchildren through a double-blind randomized controlled trial.

Over three months, children aged 8-13 in Thailand received either the probiotics or a placebo.

We found a significant reduction in cold symptoms and school absenteeism among those taking the probiotic, along with lower rates of fever and cough. Overall, this suggests probiotics could be beneficial in managing cold symptoms for school-aged kids.

Vitamin E

8
Vitamin E's complex effects on colds
We examined how vitamin E affects common cold incidence among different groups. In our study involving over 14,500 participants, we found that older smokers living in cities benefited from vitamin E, showing a 46% reduction in cold risk.

In contrast, those who smoked more and lived in rural areas faced a higher cold risk with vitamin E intake. This suggests that vitamin E's impact can vary greatly based on age, smoking habits, and where one lives, indicating the need for cautious public health guidelines regarding vitamin E supplementation.

Lactoferrin shows promise for colds
We investigated the impact of a throat spray containing lactoferrin on common cold symptoms in a double-blind, randomized controlled trial with 157 participants. Participants used various treatments over two days, and we analyzed their sore throat pain and cold-related symptoms.

Sodium Ascorbate

7
We explored the effectiveness of sodium ascorbate, or vitamin C, against colds and respiratory infections. While studies show that doses over 1 g/day do not prevent colds for most people, interestingly, those engaged in heavy physical activity experienced half the incidence of colds.

Additionally, regular intake of 1 g or more per day can lessen the severity of cold symptoms. Dosing up to 6-8 g/day after symptoms start has shown promise in reducing the duration of colds. Yet, results for preventing pneumonia in the general population remain unclear, though some benefits for certain patients were noted.

Overall, vitamin C might be worth considering for its potential to ease cold symptoms, keeping in mind its safety and affordability.

Complex fire! Our eyesight is invaluable, yet we often neglect it. Lutein and zeaxanthin in dietary supplements are crucial for eye health, as our body doesn't produce carotenoids naturally. Leafy spinach and egg yolks are high in lutein, but supplementing ensures adequate intake for proper functioning of the eyes, protecting them from oxidants. Studies show lutein absorbs up to 80% of harmful light rays and offers antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. This can reduce the risk of age-related eye diseases and the need for cataract surgery. I noticed significant changes after taking this complex—reduced tension, less redness, and overall eye clarity. Doctor Best's supplement is excellent, natural, and effective. I recommend it for everyone and plan to use it annually!

Yes! Three times "Yes"! I have two children aged 4 and 3. The younger was born at 26 weeks and has weak immunity. Despite contact with patients, he always fell ill. I tried multiple doses at nursery resulting in obstructive bronchitis. We began taking echinacea, and miraculously, we have not caught anything, even after multiple exposures. Moreover, the swollen lymph nodes disappeared after starting echinacea. We always keep two bottles in the medicine cabinet. I hope this helps fellow parents!

Echinacea is a simple, harmless remedy to boost children’s immunity, especially during cold seasons. Though delicious, be cautious as the syrup contains sugar. It is important to follow the dosage and limit use to no more than 10 days consecutively. Echinacea contains beneficial components like vitamins and essential oils, and its syrup comes with an easy-to-use pipette. It's important to observe dosage carefully to avoid side effects.

Excellent taste; it aids me in overcoming the common cold and flu, and is said to benefit the thyroid. This coconut oil is delightful with a strong coconut flavour. I store it at room temperature or chill it for tasty slices. I used this VCO when I caught a cold, and it swiftly alleviated my symptoms. It’s also an antifungal, being gentler than anti-candida pills. VCO is deemed beneficial for thyroid function and helps with muscle building. It’s pure, organic, and comes in a glass jar—no plastic leaching. An all-around winner; I adore it at room temperature or as cold bites.

I thought that oligosaccharides might help adjust the intestinal environment of my eldest daughter, who has suffered from constipation. I incorporated inulin, which acts as an oligosaccharide, into her diet, placing it in her food as it’s slightly sweet. The Now Foods inulin offers good value for money, though it dissolves poorly in cold items. Thankfully, my daughter's constipation has improved, and the unpleasant smell post-defecation has been reduced, indicating its effectiveness.

Zinc is incredibly important during the early stages of illness, especially with a common cold. I take 30 mg promptly when I feel symptoms, and for kids, I halve the dose.
