Saccharomyces reduces oxalate in juice
Effects of Juice Processing on Oxalate Contents in Carambola Juice Products.
We investigated how different juice processing methods affect oxalate levels in carambola juice, specifically looking at the role of alcohol fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. While enzyme-assisted methods increased juice yield but also raised oxalate levels, we found that fermenting the juice with Saccharomyces cerevisiae significantly lowers both total and soluble oxalate contents by 37-59%.
This reduction suggests that using Saccharomyces cerevisiae during fermentation could potentially help mitigate the risk of developing kidney stones. However, moderation is still key when consuming carambola products due to their inherent oxalate content.

Eicosapentaenoic acid reduces stone risk
Effect of n-3 fatty acid supplementation on urinary risk factors for calcium oxalate stone formation.
We explored the effects of eicosapentaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, on urinary factors linked to the formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones. In our study, we had 15 healthy participants follow a standardized diet over several phases to assess how daily supplementation with eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid influenced their urinary excretion of calcium and oxalate.
Initially, during a 5-day control phase, we collected daily urine samples and observed no changes in the urinary parameters. However, after 30 days of supplementation, we noted a significant decrease—23%—in the relative supersaturation of calcium oxalate, primarily due to reduced oxalate excretion. This suggests that the supplementation may lower the risk of stone formation by affecting how the body manages oxalate.
Our findings propose that long-term use of eicosapentaenoic acid could be beneficial for those prone to calcium oxalate stones. The beneficial effect appears to arise from changes at the cellular level, altering how oxalate is exchanged. In summary, eicosapentaenoic acid supplementation holds promise as a preventive measure against kidney stones for certain individuals.

Potassium citrate effectively treats stones
Medical treatment of uric acid kidney stones.
We investigated the role of potassium citrate in treating uric acid kidney stones in a large group of 120 patients, with promising results over a median follow-up of 3.14 years.
The treatment led to complete dissolution of stones in 88% of the cases, showing that potassium citrate helped in managing urinary conditions that promote stone formation.
We found that this approach was well-tolerated, with minimal side effects and improved urinary health when monitored effectively.

Urinary factors impact kidney stone risk
24-Hour Urinary Chemistries and Kidney Stone Risk.
We undertook a thorough analysis of 24-hour urine collections from over 6,200 participants to explore how various urinary factors contribute to kidney stone formation.
Our findings revealed that higher levels of urine volume, citrate, potassium, magnesium, and uric acid were linked to a lower risk of developing stones. Conversely, increased levels of calcium, oxalate, phosphorus, and sodium were associated with a higher risk.
Interestingly, urine acidity did not seem to play a role. Our research highlighted the complexity and varying importance of these urinary factors regarding their relationship with stone formation.

Best Absorbable Form of Calcium Why did I choose this particular calcium? Because my dietitian advised me to take calcium citrate as it is the least likely to contribute to the formation of kidney stones. This is the most optimal form of calcium. Additionally, the composition also contains vitamin D2, zinc, copper, magnesium and manganese. However, consider this if you are consuming other supplements to avoid overdose! It is recommended to take two tablets daily, ideally at different times. For instance, in the morning and afternoon. At night - it's not recommended, due to rapid mineral salt release from the body. Adults only should use this. The only drawback for me is the size of the oblong-shaped tablets - 2.4 cm long. I also struggle to swallow pills, needing to drink and eat to prevent choking on them. If my review is helpful, please like it 👍🙂

Vitamin B6 may lower kidney stones
Intake of vitamins B6 and C and the risk of kidney stones in women.
We examined the relationship between vitamin B6 intake and kidney stone formation in women. This research involved over 85,000 women with no prior history of kidney stones, monitored over 14 years. The study utilized food-frequency questionnaires to track participants' dietary vitamin consumption from both food and supplements.
Our findings revealed that higher vitamin B6 intake appeared to lower the risk of developing kidney stones. Specifically, women consuming 40 mg or more of vitamin B6 per day had a risk reduction, with a relative risk of 0.66 compared to those taking less than 3 mg per day. This suggests that large doses of vitamin B6 might help in preventing the formation of these painful stones.
On the other hand, vitamin C intake did not show a significant link to kidney stone risk. Women who consumed high amounts of vitamin C didn't experience an increased or decreased risk of kidney stones relative to those with lower intake levels. Therefore, we conclude that while vitamin B6 may provide protective benefits against kidney stones, restricting vitamin C isn't necessary for prevention.

If oxalates are already present, it's crucial to take R-5-R urgently! You can safely take it long-term, increasing the dosage to 100 mg per day. Vitamin B6, when combined with magnesium citrate and sodium ascorbate, dissolves oxalate stones or sand in the kidneys. By taking 300 mg/day, I can monitor my urine. Furthermore, it lowers histamine levels and aids with seasonal allergies, along with other health benefits.

Magnesium reduces kidney stone risk
Effect of magnesium oxide or citrate supplements on metabolic risk factors in kidney stone formers with idiopathic hyperoxaluria: a randomized clinical trial.
We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to explore how magnesium treatments influence kidney stones, specifically for those with high levels of oxalate in their urine. Our study involved 90 participants with a history of calcium kidney stones, all of whom were experiencing idiopathic hyperoxaluria. They were divided into three groups receiving either magnesium oxide (MgO), magnesium citrate (MgCit), or a placebo for eight weeks, while their diets were monitored to keep nutritional intake consistent.
After the treatment period, we observed promising results. Both MgO and MgCit effectively reduced the excretion of oxalate in urine, which is a key factor in kidney stone formation. The Group taking magnesium citrate showed even more significant reductions in both oxalate levels and the calcium oxalate supersaturation index, which measures the concentration of stone-forming minerals in urine. This was notably true for participants with normal magnesium levels.
Overall, we found that magnesium supplements might play a beneficial role in decreasing critical risk factors for kidney stones, especially for those using magnesium citrate. It's encouraging to see that this may offer a practical option for those struggling with recurrent stones due to high oxalate excretion.

Vitamin C intake risks explored
Total, Dietary, and Supplemental Vitamin C Intake and Risk of Incident Kidney Stones.
We examined the relationship between vitamin C intake and the risk of developing kidney stones in a large cohort. This study included a significant number of participants: 156,735 women from the Nurses' Health Studies and 40,536 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.
Our findings revealed that total and supplemental vitamin C intake was linked to a higher risk of kidney stones in men, but there was no such association evident in women. Specifically, among men, those who consumed higher amounts of vitamin C had greater likelihoods of developing stones when compared to those with lower intakes.
However, dietary vitamin C did not show a connection with kidney stones in either men or women. This suggests that while supplements may pose risks for men, dietary sources of vitamin C might not have the same impact. Overall, the study indicates that we should be cautious about high vitamin C supplement consumption, especially for men, while highlighting that dietary intake appears safe.

Vitamin D3 does not prevent stones
Effect of two vitamin D repletion protocols on 24-h urine calcium in patients with recurrent calcium kidney stones and vitamin D deficiency: a randomized clinical trial.
We assessed how two different vitamin D3 repletion protocols affect patients with recurrent calcium kidney stones and vitamin D deficiency. This was a controlled clinical trial involving 62 participants who had low levels of vitamin D and were prone to kidney stones. We administered either 2000 IU of cholecalciferol daily for 12 weeks or 50,000 IU weekly for 8 weeks.
Both treatment approaches resulted in a significant increase in 24-hour urine calcium levels; however, there was no difference between the two methods. Importantly, neither regimen increased the supersaturation of calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate, which are substances that can contribute to the formation of kidney stones.
We also observed a notable increase in serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, particularly in the weekly high-dose group, and a decline in serum parathyroid hormone in both groups. Despite these changes, it's crucial to highlight that our findings indicate no significant advantages in preventing kidney stones from vitamin D3 treatment alone.

Calcium does not increase kidney stone risk
Risk of calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis after calcium or combined calcium and calcitriol supplementation in postmenopausal women.
We examined the effects of calcium, with or without calcitriol, on kidney stone risk in postmenopausal Thai women. The study involved 53 women who took either calcium alone or calcium plus calcitriol for three months.
We found that while calcium levels in urine increased, there was no significant rise in the risk of kidney stones. Overall, most subjects did not experience significant changes in factors that would predispose them to kidney stones.
Our results suggest that calcium and vitamin D supplementation does not contribute to an increased risk of kidney stones, making it a safer option for bone health in this population.

The best complex for addressing calcium deficiency. Alongside magnesium and vitamin D, it contains K2 and trace elements that aid proper calcium absorption in bones, rather than in kidneys and blood vessels. It’s advisable to first remove deficiencies in vitamin D and magnesium before taking calcium.

Calcium's role in kidney stones
Associations between 25-hydroxyvitamin D/calcium/alkaline phosphatase levels and the risk of developing kidney stones: Results from NHANES (2013-2018)-based and Mendelian randomization studies.
We explored the connections between calcium levels and kidney stones using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2013 to 2018, along with more advanced genetic analyses. Our aim was to understand how the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, calcium, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) might influence the risk of developing kidney stones.
While observational analyses suggested a relationship between ALP levels and kidney stones, we found that calcium levels did not display a significant association with kidney stones when looking at the data directly. However, utilizing Mendelian randomization analysis, we observed a potential causal link, indicating that elevated calcium levels could indeed raise the risk of developing kidney stones.
The key takeaway from our research is that while observational studies show no strong link between calcium and kidney stones, our genetic analysis implies that higher calcium may contribute to stone formation. Our work provides valuable insights and directions for future studies focused on preventing and treating this painful condition.

This is the best calcium form! As I have urolithiasis, my urologist advised that calcium should only be taken in this form. It’s the mildest and is absorbed quickly without leading to new stones. This calcium has been a lifesaver. I just wish it wasn’t so often out of stock.

Iron treatment for kidney stones
An Ultrasmall Self-Assembled Gallic-Acid-Based Natural Multifunctional Defense Networks for Therapeutic Application in Calcium Oxalate Nephropathies.
We explored the potential of an innovative treatment for calcium oxalate (CaOx) nephropathies using ultrasmall iron-gallic acid (Fe-Ga) metal-phenolic networks. These nanonetworks showcase the unique ability to attach themselves to certain crystal surfaces, specifically targeting the high-energy faces of calcium oxalate crystals. By doing so, they inhibit the growth of these harmful crystals and encourage a transition to a less dangerous form.
Additionally, Fe-Ga MPNs have shown promise as powerful antioxidants, reducing oxidative damage and inflammation within the kidneys. This treatment seems to be particularly effective at accumulating where kidney injury occurs, subsequently aiding in tubule function and reducing overall kidney inflammation. The result is a multi-faceted approach to kidney stone treatment, combining crystallization inhibition with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
Our analysis points to a shift in immune responses as a result of Fe-Ga MPNs, showing potential benefits in preventing future complications from kidney stones. Overall, this multifunctional treatment approach presents exciting opportunities for addressing kidney stones while also providing protective effects against oxidative stress and inflammation.
