We explored the impact of curcumin, a natural compound found in turmeric, on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Our investigation utilized two models: laboratory-based NSCLC cell lines (A549 and NCI-H1299) and a mouse tumor model. By applying curcumin treatment, we aimed to understand how it influences cell growth and induces a specific form of cell death known as pyroptosis.
Our findings revealed that curcumin effectively slowed down the growth of NSCLC cells and triggered pyroptosis. This process is mediated through interactions with a protein called Smurf2, which regulates the ubiquitination of another protein, NLRP3. We observed that when Smurf2 activity was inhibited by curcumin, NLRP3 was stabilized, leading to increased levels of pyroptosis-associated factors.
In the animal study, curcumin treatment also resulted in smaller tumor sizes and decreased expression of Ki67, a marker for cell proliferation. Furthermore, this treatment increased NLRP3 and the factors linked to pyroptosis. Overall, our work illustrates how curcumin may hold therapeutic promise for lung cancer treatment by promoting destruction of cancer cells through pyroptosis.

Those who responded positively to the treatment experienced significantly longer survival compared to non-responders, which is encouraging for both patients and doctors seeking options after traditional therapies fail.
The treatment was generally well tolerated, with manageable side effects mostly related to myelosuppression and liver functions. Additionally, genetic testing revealed consistency between the tumors and the cerebrospinal fluid, which opens up further investigation into the underlying mechanisms of treatment resistance. We conducted a study to understand how vitamin D3 influences lung cancer, particularly focusing on a protein known as histidine-rich calcium-binding protein (HRC). Our research explored whether vitamin D3 could help lower HRC levels, given its crucial role in calcium balance, which is significant in cancer development.
We measured the expression of HRC and the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in lung cancer tissues compared to normal and adjacent non-cancerous tissues. Using various lab techniques, we assessed how vitamin D3 affects lung cancer cells, including their growth, spread, and ability to undergo programmed cell death, known as apoptosis.
Our findings revealed that vitamin D3 does inhibit the expression of HRC, which in turn decreased the migration and proliferation of lung cancer cells. Additionally, we noted an increase in the number of cells undergoing apoptosis in response to vitamin D3 treatment. In our animal model, mice treated with a vitamin D3 formulation exhibited smaller tumors and fewer cancerous cells than those treated with a combination of vitamin D3 and HRC.
Overall, our study indicates that vitamin D3 plays a protective role against lung cancer by downregulating HRC, thus slowing tumor growth and promoting cancer cell death.

We aimed to understand how all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), a form of vitamin A, influences lung cancer development caused by benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) exposure in mice. The study involved a thorough examination of the overall health of the mice, including body and organ weights, blood tests, and tissue analysis for any signs of damage or inflammation.
In our observations, B(a)P significantly harmed the mice, leading to weight loss and increased organ weight, particularly in the liver and lungs. Blood analysis revealed a concerning decrease in healthy blood cells and an increase in inflammatory markers, indicating an unhealthy state. However, we found that when these mice were treated with ATRA, their conditions improved remarkably.
The treated mice regained weight, saw improvements in their blood parameters, and exhibited lower levels of cancer-related inflammation. Notably, the expression of the COX-2 gene—an important player in inflammation and cancer—was dramatically reduced with ATRA treatment in both lung and liver tissues. This suggests that ATRA effectively counteracts the inflammatory effects and may help prevent the initial stages of cancer caused by B(a)P exposure.
Overall, our findings highlight the potential of vitamin A in mitigating some of the risks associated with lung cancer development due to environmental carcinogens, supporting further exploration of its role in cancer prevention.

Fun fact: The ancient Greeks used Oregano oil as an antidote! The manufacturer recommends 1 softgel 1–3 times daily. Oregano is an effective natural antibiotic. During my illness, my husband and I took numerous IHERB supplements, but Oregano twice daily was essential! Combined with other treatments, it prevented the virus from infecting my lungs, resulting in a "mild form" of the disease. It can sometimes cause belching, but that doesn't happen constantly. Even children can swallow the small gelatine capsules. I suggest starting Oregano in autumn or winter; it has helped our family immensely!
