Zinc penetration through the skin barrier in atopic dermatitis and rosacea using reflectance confocal microscopy.
We investigated how well zinc penetrates the skin in individuals with rosacea, a common condition that affects skin barrier function. Using a non-invasive technique called reflectance confocal microscopy, we compared the skin barrier permeability between those with rosacea, atopic dermatitis, and healthy individuals.
Our results revealed that zinc penetration was greater in patients with rosacea compared to those with healthy skin. Specifically, we observed higher intensity readings of zinc at a depth of 8 micrometers in the skin of rosacea patients. This indicates that their skin barrier might be more compromised in the upper layers.
Interestingly, when comparing both conditions, we found that patients with atopic dermatitis showed greater zinc penetration at deeper layers of the skin. This suggests subtle differences in how these two conditions affect skin barriers. Overall, the findings suggest that patients with rosacea experience increased permeability in the upper layers of the skin due to weakened barrier function.

Role of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms in patients with rosacea: a case-control study.
We designed a fascinating case-control study to investigate how vitamin D might influence the risk of developing rosacea, a common skin condition. In our research, we compared patients who have rosacea to healthy individuals, assessing their vitamin D levels and specific variations in their vitamin D receptor genes.
The findings indicated that patients with rosacea had notably higher levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D. In fact, those with elevated vitamin D levels had a 1.36-fold increased risk of developing rosacea. We also discovered that certain genetic variations, such as the ApaI and TaqI polymorphisms, played a significant role in rosacea susceptibility, with heterozygous and mutant forms of the ApaI variants particularly increasing risk.
These results suggest that vitamin D and its receptor pathways may be contributing factors in rosacea development. However, it’s important to note that while these associations are compelling, causality remains unclear, meaning we cannot conclude that vitamin D treatment will definitively affect rosacea outcomes.
